Travel Insurance Cover For Cancelled Travel Plans In 2020

Travel insurance does not cover a pandemic

COVID-19 threw many travel plans into disarray in 2020. If you were one of the many Australians with a trip booked, hopefully you had travel insurance, and have been able to claim on some or all of your losses. But it can depend on what your policy covers, and when you bought the policy.

  • People who bought travel insurance before COVID-19 became a “known event” may have been covered for medical expenses arising from contracting the disease overseas, and may even have been covered for cancellation expenses.
  • People who bought travel insurance after the disease was a known event may not have been covered for medical or cancellation expenses relating to contracting the disease, or from changes to travel plans resulting from quarantine measures, for example.

On 18 March 2020, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated alert levels to “Do not travel” for all destinations. On 25 March, it was escalated to a travel ban.

If your travel insurance policy excluded cover for pandemics or epidemics, or you bought the policy after COVID-19 became a known event, then your travel insurance wouldn’t have covered losses incurred as a result of coronavirus or the travel bans.

But it pays to speak to your insurer before cancelling, because if they don’t cover cancellation, rearranging your holiday dates to a later time may be a more cost-effective option.

What Are You Going To Do There

Cruising the ocean roads on a scooter? Carving up the ski slopes? Paragliding from a mountain top? These things aren’t necessarily included in a travel insurance policy.

Check the list of activities that are included in your insurance and those that you’ll have to pay extra for.

And take it easy on the grog if your alcohol or drug intake is the cause of, or a factor in, an adverse event, it won’t be covered by your policy.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover After Covid

Here’s what travel insurance still covers after the coronavirus outbreak:

Baggage. Provides reimbursement for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage or personal items.;

Employment layoff. Offers reimbursement for prepaid, nonrefundable trip payments and deposits if you have to cancel a trip because of an involuntary layoff or termination of employment.;

Financial default. In the event of a complete cessation of operations due to financial circumstances, this coverage kicks in.

Missed connection. Covers you for a missed flight connection, or for the additional costs to “catch up” to a cruise if the cause of delay is an accident or bad weather, travel insurance covers you.

Travel delay. Provides reimbursement for meals and accommodations when a trip is unexpectedly delayed for more than a specified minimum time.;

Trip cancellation. Reimburses you for nonrefundable trip payments and deposits if a trip is canceled for illness, injury, death, or other specific reasons, or if your destination is uninhabitable.

Trip interruption. Covers you for nonrefundable trip payments and deposits if a trip is interrupted by illness, injury, death, or other specific reasons.;

Here’s how to get travel insurance that covers you.

Are Some Insurers Covering Covid

Check Your Travel Insurance Amid Coronavirus Pandemic ...

Not all the news on the COVID-19 insurance front is negative. According to Walch, many traditional travel insurance policies will cover your COVID-19 related travel concerns if you meet regular guidelines.

Examples of COVID-19 coverage in traditional plans include:

  • If you must visit a doctor or hospital during a trip due to a COVID-19 illness
  • If you get sick with COVID-19 and must cancel a trip
  • If a physician orders you to quarantine before a trip
  • If you lost a job during the coronavirus pandemic by no fault of your own

In addition, some plans are now offering higher travel delay limits in order to help with additional accommodation expenses due to a covered quarantine, adds Walch.

And, there are also some individual insurers that are simply covering COVID-19 outright. For example, World Nomads plans cover the diagnosis of COVID-19 the same as any other illness with benefits that could include emergency medical care, emergency medical evacuation, trip delay and trip interruption coverage if you contract COVID-19 while traveling.

How Travel Medical Insurance Differs

If your trip doesn’t include nonrefundable trip costs paid to a travel provider or the trip insurance coverage you have from your credit cards is sufficient, purchasing a standalone travel health insurance policy may be your best bet for an upcoming trip.

These policies provide reimbursement for emergency medical expenses, including evacuations, while youre traveling. Again, it’s important to check if the policy youre considering has any clauses related to pandemics or exclusions for travel to countries that have current travel advisories to ensure you don’t nullify your medical coverage.

It depends. Fear of travel generally isn’t an allowable reason, so you won’t benefit from trip cancellation coverage for nonrefundable payments made to a trip supplier. The reason for cancellation has to fall into one of the unforeseen events listed in the policy. However, if youve purchased a CFAR add-on and want to cancel, you will be covered for up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit as long as you cancel at least two days before the departure date.

More Travel Insurance To Consider

Some travel insurance wont cover epidemics

When youre buying a comprehensive travel insurance plan you can get important coverage types in addition to medical insurance. Heres what to look for:

  • Trip cancellation coverage can reimburse you 100% for non-refundable deposits you lose if you have to cancel the trip for a reason covered by the policy, such as an illness or injury of a traveler, or a death in the family.
  • Trip delay and interruption coverage can reimburse you for extra costs if you miss part of your trip because of a delay, such as a late flight, or if you have to cut your trip short and return home.
  • Baggage loss covers more than just luggage that never shows up at your destination. It can also cover damaged baggage and the theft of your belongings during the trip.

Some Countries Now Require You To Have Travel Medical Insurance

Some airlines will help you make sure you have the right coverage for your destination by checking your documents at the gate.

Just 18 months ago, the standard travel insurance policy wouldnt have covered losses stemming from a pandemic. But nowadays some countries demand exactly that and travel insurers have been forced to pivot.

Costa Rica, for example, now requires all international visitors to carry at least $50,000 in travel medical insurance that covers quarantine and medical costs for visitors who test positive for coronavirus.;

Some airlines will help you make sure you have the right coverage for your destination by checking your documents at the gate. They dont want to fly you somewhere only for you to be told you cant get in because then the airline is responsible for getting you home, said Scott Keyes, the founder of Scotts Cheap Flights.;

But there are other things you may want to consider. Even when its not required, travel medical insurance can fill gaps in your health insurance coverage and possibly save you tens of thousands of dollars in emergency medical expenses.;

Medicare and many U.S. health insurance plans often dont cover health care for people while they travel outside of the U.S. Some American insurance networks are so restrictive that even medical emergencies during domestic travel would incur high out-of-pocket costs.;

Dont make the mistake of assuming youre covered for whatever situation, Keyes said.

If You Purchased Travel Insurance Before Covid

If you had already purchased travel insurance prior to the pandemic declaration, you may have coverage for the following:

Trip Cancellation

Travel insurance typically covers nonrefundable costs such as airfare and hotel bookings if your trip is canceled or delayed due to covered reasons including illness, natural disaster, or job loss. This may include trip-cancellation benefits if you get sick with COVID-19 before your trip or if you get quarantined during your travels. Travel insurance does not cover all situations, such as work emergencies, pre-existing medical conditions, or if you simply change your mind about a trip.

Trip Interruption

Trip interruption coverage provides reimbursement for prepaid and nonrefundable travel costs if your trip needs to be cut short for a variety of covered reasons. Covered reasons can range from unforeseen illness or death of a family member to natural disasters. If you purchased travel insurance before the COVID-19 pandemic, your plan may include coverage if you become ill from the coronavirus during your trip.;;

Emergency Medical Insurance

Even if you purchase travel insurance after the date the pandemic became a known event, some pandemic-friendly plans will offer trip cancellation, trip interruption or emergency medical coverage if you contract COVID-19 after youve purchased your travel insurance policy.

Consider Cancel For Any Reason Travel Insurance

“Cancel For Any Reason” coverage allows you to cancel a trip for any reason and receive a partial refund of your nonrefundable trip costs as long as the trip is canceled at least two days in advance. You cannot purchase CFAR coverage on its own; it is an optional upgrade that is sometimes available when you buy travel insurance. Not all providers offer it, so if youre looking for the CFAR supplement, youll have to ask your travel insurance provider about it or filter your online search accordingly.

Travel Restrictions In Canada Amid The Pandemic

Supposed to go to a wedding in Mexico but ran into some ...

There are other things youll need to consider aside from purchasing a travel medical insurance policy that covers COVID-19-related medical issues, such as the following:

Your Ability To Travel To A Specific Destination

Certain countries may not allow non-residents to travel to their locations. Make sure to find out where Canadians are allowed to travel. And if youre travelling within Canada, find out where residents from your province are permitted to go.;

For example, during the last year and a half, the premiers in Canada had restricted interprovincial travel during the high peaks of the virus. Moreover, depending on your destination, there may be certain measures in place to keep the virus from spreading, including a 14-day quarantine like Canada.;

Find out if you should buy travel insurance when travelling within Canada.

You may also need a negative COVID-19 test before travelling to a certain destination, or even before you board your flight. For instance, when travelling to Canada, travellers must take the COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their departure. Be sure to do some homework on the specific destination youre planning to travel to before leaving home.;

Requirements When Arriving In Canada

For months, Canadians have been warned that they will have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival to Canada from an international destination. Before you travel, make sure any work or school obligations will allow for you to be away for another 2 weeks after you get back.;

How To Find A Plan That Covers Covid

First of all, you should look in the exclusion section to see if pandemics or epidemics are mentioned. If so, youll need to shop around for a different policy, said Tunnah.

Even though travel insurance companies may offer COVID-19 sickness coverage, they typically dont offer benefits for every circumstance.

Every policy is different, so youll want to get a good grasp of a plans coverage before you purchase it, Tunnah explained. Some of the questions you should ask yourself are: Does the plan cover emergency medical and evacuation expenses if I contract COVID-19? What are covered reasons for cancellation? What if my trip is delayed or interrupted because of a COVID-19 event?

If youre getting confused from reading the legal jargon of a policy, you can contact the customer service department of your travel insurance company, Tunnah advised. Representatives should be able to provide plain English explanations of coverage and help you identify a plan that meets your specific trip needs.

To see multiple options in one place, InsureMyTrip has a COVID-19 coverage tool that allows you to compare different policies.

Heres what you should be looking for according to the company:

Are You Taking Any Valuable Items

More passengers buy travel insurance as the pandemic drags on

Do you need cover for a digital SLR camera or expensive tablet or laptop? Cover for such valuables can vary from a few hundred dollars to $25,000, and higher cover will often mean a higher premium.

Policies also vary when it comes to how they cover valuable items. Items in your check-in luggage often aren’t covered, while cover for baggage stored in your hire car is sketchy. And baggage left unattended is never covered, which can include a bag that is stolen while you’re looking the other way.
