How Does A Pet Insurance Deductible Work
The deductible is the portion of the bill youre responsible for before you can start being reimbursed for veterinary costs. Most plans come with an annual deductible. For example, if your annual deductible is $1,000, youll need to pay for $1,000 in veterinary costs each year before you can start getting reimbursed for veterinary costs.

Why Pet Insurance Is Worth It
When a member of your family is sick or hurt, you spare no expense to get them well â pets are no exception.
One of our Embraced pets, an English bulldog named June, started having trouble breathing right before the holidays. June was diagnosed with Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome and needed surgery to fix it. That surgery was $6,858.32 total, and Embrace reimbursed $5,086.66. âIf we didn’t have pet insurance, we might not have been able to make the decisions needed to keep June alive,â said Adrienne, Juneâs owner.
Pet parents like Adrienne, and thousands of others, have learned the value of a good pet insurance plan when their furry family members needed vet care. Read additional stories from our Embraced customers.

One Free Bite Your Insurer May Drop You After One Unproven Dog Claim
A little more than a year ago I was faced with the choice of getting rid of my beloved dog Caesar or losing the insurance on my house. A utility man had come on my property without permission when I wasnt home and claimed Caesar bit him. His lawyer filed notice with my insurer a few days later, my insurer immediately told me it wouldnt renew, and after that no one would touch me — or my dog — with that claim outstanding.
Lloyds of London came through at the last minute, with a homeowners policy stripped of canine coverage and costing significantly more. Gone was my umbrella policy covering catastrophic liability and as long as Caesar is alive any chance of shopping for insurance in the regular market.
Conventional wisdom says dogs get one free bite, but thats not true. Just the unproven allegation of a bite is enough to lead home insurers to drop coverage, setting off a scramble to find insurance at any cost to cover what is most peoples most valuable asset. Some agents sell specialized canine policies, but they are expensive and can include onerous restrictions including installing high fences or keeping the dog muzzled or off public thoroughfares.
Caesar the toller — and subject of a lawsuit.
Theyre smart enough to see the pictures on the wall with everybody sitting with the family pit bull, he said. Youve got to know the reputation of the breed youre buying.
What To Do If You Own A Restricted Dog Breed
If you have a restricted breed, your home insurer might drop you or suggest you get rid of the dog in order to keep coverage. Here are possible solutions.
2. Look for a new home insurance company. If you can’t get an exception, you could shop around for a new home insurer that will sell you insurance with the dog. You may have an exceptionally hard time if the dog has already bitten someone or you have a pit bull or Rottweiler, which are typically considered aggressive.
3. Have the dog excluded from coverage. If you have a prohibited breed and want to stay with your insurer, ask if you can get the dog excluded from coverage. You will not have insurance for liability claims against you if the dog bites or injures someone. This means you’ll be personally responsible if you’re sued over a dog injury. The average dog liability insurance claim was $33,230 in 2016, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
If your current home insurer won’t sell you a policy that excludes dog liability, ask an independent insurance agent if there are any companies that will.
4. Get insurance for the dog another way. If your dog is excluded from home insurance coverage, there may be other ways to cover dog liability:

What Factors Determine The Cost Of Pet Insurance
The size, breed, age, and geographic location of your pet all influence the cost of your insurance policy. The length of your policy and the company offering your plan also play a role. Finally, you get to determine what type of policy works best for you by selecting a quote that makes sense for your budget.
Pay Only For The Stuff You Need
We know our pets are due for blood work and vaccines each year, so we can budget and plan for those expenses, says Dr. Katie Woodley, a holistic veterinarian. For young, healthy pets, picking a plan that covers only emergencies and catastrophic illness will help you save money every month. Reidenbach, for instance, opted for a plan that covers only major events like broken bones and hospitalization. Personally, I can manage paying for an annual wellness visit and vaccines. I cant financially manage a major issue like a torn ligament or anything requiring major diagnostics or hospitalization. So I chose a plan that will cover expensive, catastrophic things only, she explains.

I Rent Do I Need To Worry About Insurance
Like homeowners insurance, renters insurance may cover dog bites. If you are a potential tenant looking for an apartment, an offer to provide renters insurance may help convince a landlord to accept you and your dog as tenants. Additionally, renters insurance will cover your personal property not covered by your landlords insurance.
Is It Worth Buying Pet Insurance For Your Cat Or Dog Here’s What You Should Consider
Almost two-thirds of households have pets, and our furry friends mean a lot to us. In a recent CHOICE Consumer Pulse survey, we found that more than half of cat and dog owners are prepared to pay up to $2500 for treatment if their pet has a life-threatening illness.
But even though they’re prepared to pay the price, only 16% of cat and dog owners have pet insurance. Most of them plan to draw on credit or take out a loan if their pet needed treatment and they didn’t have the cash available.
Pet insurance policies have many restrictions and a lack of competition in the market. Until recently, there were only three pet insurance providers in Australia. Trupanion became the fourth player in the market in 2019 , and in 2020, Knose and Vets Choice became available.
It’s hard to imagine losing a pet because you can’t afford to pay the vet bills. But is it worth taking out pet insurance for peace of mind? Here are some points to consider.

Should I Enroll My Dog Now Or Wait
The younger you enroll your dog, the better. Just like our health insurance plans, pre-existing conditions are generally not covered. Enrolling your dog when theyre healthy will reduce the likelihood of pre-existing conditions. And, allow you to obtain better coverage for your dog.
For example, a dog who is 8 weeks old almost never has pre-existing conditions. If you enroll your dog at this age, and she develops an illness when shes one year old, that illness is more likely to be covered under her pet insurance plan.
If your dog is one year old and she already has a condition, the condition will be labeled as pre-existing and it wont be covered .
Lets look at some companies, and see what they offer us. Well offer details on the ones we found most comprehensive, but there are lots of companies to look at!
Is Pet Insurance The Answer
Like health insurance, pet plans include deductibles, copays, and monthly premiums, and have coverage limitations. You foot the bills yourself and wait for reimbursement.
The average accident and illness premiums cost $585 a year for a dog and $350 for a cat, but the costs rise depending on your pets breed , age , ZIP code , and the coverage you choose.
Medical treatment for dogs costs more than for cats. Some plans, like ones sold by the ASPCA, limit coverage to usual and customary costs based on veterinary pricing in your area.
If youre considering a policy, look for free quotes, terms and conditions, and a sample policy on insurers websites. Consider coverage with simple, percentage-based payouts and no reliance on judgments of whats reasonable, to avoid your own future headaches. Find out how your premiums might increase as your pet ages.
For example, another pet insurance provider, Healthy Paws, allows you to choose your annual deductible and reimbursement amounts . It has no annual limit on claims and coverage includes accidents, diagnostic treatment, emergency care, hospitalization, prescriptions, and surgery, but it does not cover pre-existing conditions, spay or neutering, or preventative or routine care.
If youre unlucky enough to have a pet with a costly chronic condition or an illness, you might get a positive payout from a plan. But its a roll of the dice many policies may not be worth the cost over many years for a generally healthy animal.

Charities And Other Help
If you cant afford pet insurance the following groups offer free treatment to pets:
- The Blue Cross
- The Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals
- The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
- The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
- The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Help from these charities is means-tested and mainly helps people who are on a low income, retired or receive certain state benefits to get help towards the cost of veterinary care.
Myth #2it Wont Cover What I Need
You might be surprised at just how much is covered with certain plans. For example, Complete CoverageSM covers a lot of things youd expect and some things you might not like cancer and stem cell therapy. It covers accidents, illnesses, and hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia and certain eye disorders. It even includes coverage for prescription food and supplements when used to treat a covered condition and behavioral conditions with symptoms including destructive chewing, fur pulling, or excessive vocalization.
It does have a list of exclusions, which we try to keep as short as possible. These include cosmetic procedures , breeding costs, and pre-existing conditions, which are typically not covered by any provider. Look at a sample plan for a full list.

How to save money on vet and other pet care costs
As many pet owners are aware, an injury can happen to a beloved companion at any time.
Mark Bobrow and Isabelle Duvernois knew their cat Roscoe was badly injured when they noticed that the lower part of his left hind leg was hanging at an odd angle. He and our other cat, Woogie, were jumping in and out of a hole below our box-spring mattress, Bobrow says. We think he caught his leg in a spring, panicked, and yanked his leg out.
Roscoe, who had just turned 6, broke his leg in two places and tore ligaments in his ankle. His surgery, which included placing pins in the fractures and mesh around the ligaments, and his hospital stay, pain meds, and other costs totaled about $6,500, which the couple paid out of pocket.
Roscoe’s injuries were pricier than average. Pet owners will probably incur at least one $2,000 to $5,000 bill for emergency pet care at some point during their pets lifetime, says Louise Murray, DVM, a veterinary internist in Westchester County, N.Y.
But pet insurance can help offset some or most of the costs of paying a veterinarian to diagnose, treat, and manage a pets illness or injury. And this insurance could help owners avoid having to choose economic euthanasialetting a beloved animal go because they cant afford that big a bill.
Preventing Ear Infections In Dogs
Rather than treating an ear infection, you can prevent them! Adding an ear cleaning routine to your grooming and bathing regimen can help prevent ear infections. If you have a breed that is more prone to ear infections, cleaning may have to be more frequent. Another good preventative is consistently drying the inside of your dogs ear after swimming or bathing. Simply use a towel and/or cotton ball to dry out the ear before the moisture has time to fester.
Before implementing an ear cleaning routine, have your veterinarian or veterinary technician demonstrate how to clean your dogs ears. Using the wrong technique or cleaning too often can damage your dogs ear canal and cause more damage. Never use a cotton tipped applicator when cleaning your dogs ears unless otherwise advised by your veterinarian. Dog ears are shaped very differently than a human ear and cleaning too deeply can cause damage to the ear drum.
Don’t let ear infections keep you and your dog from enjoying the great outdoors as the weather warms up! Take a few simple steps to ensure your pups ears stay clean and dry while still having a great spring season!

Consider Your Dogs Or Cats Age Medical History And Breed
A lot of the questions youll need to ask will depend on your pets particular profile, so youll need to know its age, breed , and medical history. Certain dog breeds are predisposed to dental disease, bloat, breathing problems, even joint issues. If you know your dogs breed, Stephanie Seger, whose blog bigdogmom.com is a resource for other large dog owners, recommends checking with its national breed club to get a list of common health conditions for that breed, then cross-reference it with what is covered by an individual plan. If your pet has been sick in the past, youll want to find out if that illness qualifies as a preexisting condition and thus will not be covered. Reidenbach says even partially related treatments can be excluded. For example, diabetes can lead to urinary-tract infections, so those infections may not be covered, she says.
