To claim the medical expense deduction, you must itemize your deductions. Itemizing requires that you don’t take the standard deduction. Normally, you should only claim the medical expenses deduction if your itemized deductions are greater than your standard deduction .

If you elect to itemize, you must use IRS Form 1040 to file your taxes and attach Schedule A.

  • On Schedule A, report the total medical expenses you paid during the year on line 1 and your adjusted gross income on line 2.
  • Enter 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on line 3.
  • Enter the difference between your expenses and 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on line 4.

What If I Receive Health Benefits From My Employer

If you happen to work for a company that pays for your health plan, then those costs cannot be claimed as health expenses, since they would be paid for directly through your plan or reimbursed to you.Although you cannot claim plans paid by your employer, you can claim what you pay out-of-pocket. This means that all eligible medical expenses not covered by a health insurance plan may be claimed. For example, let’s say you went to the dentist. Your charges were $500, but your health insurance plan only reimbursed you for $300. You can then claim $200 since that is what you paid out-of-pocket. How To Apply The Percentage Threshold

This 7.5% rule is typically disadvantageous mathematically, unless you have significant other medical expenses in addition to your insurance premiums. You can include these in the deduction to help you get over the 7.5% threshold.

As an example, you could not deduct your premiums in 2020 if your AGI was $60,000 and you paid $4,500 in health insurance premiums over the course of the tax year because 7.5% of your AGI works out to $4,500. You didnt pay anything in excess of that figure.

But youve spent a cumulative total of $7,500 if you additionally paid $3,000 in additional uninsured medical expenses. This is $3,000 more than your 7.5% threshold so you can claim the entire $3,000 as an itemized tax deduction.

So, for example, if you were insuring yourself and your spouse, you could continue coverage only for yourself, only for your spouse or for both of you.

        There is an exception made to the 7.5% rule for individuals who run their own businesses. Among the many other tax deductions and benefits that self-employed individuals can claim, youre allowed to deduct the entirety of your premium payments from your adjusted gross income, regardless of if you itemize your deductions. However, you may be precluded from this deduction if you are:

        • Eligible to participate in another employers plan and elect not to
        • Self-employed, but you have another job that offers a health plan
        • Eligible to receive coverage through a spouse’s employer-sponsored plan.

        There are also limitations imposed on self-employed individuals based on the amount of their business income. In any given year, a self-employed person cannot deduct more than the amount of income they generate through their business operations.

        Individuals who operate more than one business can designate only one of them as the health insurance plan sponsor you cannot add up the income generated by multiple companies in order to claim the maximum deduction. In the case of self-employed persons, it may be in their best interest to choose their most profitable business as the plan sponsor in order to increase their potential amount of tax relief.

        If you are paying premiums under a plan managed by your employer, you will find the exact amount paid on your T4 Statement of Remuneration slip in Box 85 of the other information section.
