How Do I Claim The Medical Expenses Tax Deduction

Tax Forms & Deductions : Can You Claim Your Car Insurance on Your Taxes?

To claim the medical expense deduction, you must itemize your deductions. Itemizing requires that you don’t take the standard deduction. Normally, you should only claim the medical expenses deduction if your itemized deductions are greater than your standard deduction .

If you elect to itemize, you must use IRS Form 1040 to file your taxes and attach Schedule A.

  • On Schedule A, report the total medical expenses you paid during the year on line 1 and your adjusted gross income on line 2.
  • Enter 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on line 3.
  • Enter the difference between your expenses and 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on line 4.
  • The resulting amount on line 4 will be added to any other itemized deductions and subtracted from your adjusted gross income to reduce your taxable income for the year.
  • If this amount, plus any other itemized deductions you claim, is less than your standard deduction, you probably shouldn’t itemize.

What If I Receive Health Benefits From My Employer

If you happen to work for a company that pays for your health plan, then those costs cannot be claimed as health expenses, since they would be paid for directly through your plan or reimbursed to you.Although you cannot claim plans paid by your employer, you can claim what you pay out-of-pocket. This means that all eligible medical expenses not covered by a health insurance plan may be claimed. For example, let’s say you went to the dentist. Your charges were $500, but your health insurance plan only reimbursed you for $300. You can then claim $200 since that is what you paid out-of-pocket. Remember, you can only claim the portion of the premiums you pay yourself, not any amount covered by your employer.

Other qualifying medical expenses are premiums you pay for yourself, your spouse, common-law partner, or for anyone you are connected to by blood to a private health services plan . These expenses can be claimed on your income tax and benefit return. Refer to the CRA website for more details.

How To Apply The Percentage Threshold

This 7.5% rule is typically disadvantageous mathematically, unless you have significant other medical expenses in addition to your insurance premiums. You can include these in the deduction to help you get over the 7.5% threshold.

As an example, you could not deduct your premiums in 2020 if your AGI was $60,000 and you paid $4,500 in health insurance premiums over the course of the tax year because 7.5% of your AGI works out to $4,500. You didnt pay anything in excess of that figure.

But youve spent a cumulative total of $7,500 if you additionally paid $3,000 in additional uninsured medical expenses. This is $3,000 more than your 7.5% threshold so you can claim the entire $3,000 as an itemized tax deduction.

Can You Get Tax Credits For The Insurance Premiums You Pay

You may pay insurance premiums for your car, home, life, and health. Did you know that you may be able to get tax credits for some of these payments mainly medical expenses?

Fortunately, in Canada, we have a publicly funded healthcare system where all Canadians have reasonable access to many health services, without having to pay out-of-pocket . Some of these things include appointments with your family doctor, visits to an emergency room, medical tests, and surgeries.

Services not provided by the healthcare system are things like dental services, eyeglasses, and laser eye surgery. Most people pay for these personal health services out-of-pocket, through their employer, or through private health insurance plans.

Besides healthcare, the government also provides tax support for health-related costs. This means that the government offers tax credits for disability, medical expenses, and deductions for private health insurance premiums for the self-employed, amongst other things. Did you know that if you had to travel outside of Canada for medical needs, then you could claim that as a medical expense when you were filing your taxes? Or, if you had celiac disease and could only consume gluten-free products, did you know that you could claim the extra cost of purchasing gluten-free food as a medical expense? Visit the CRA website for more information.

Time Frame For Choosing Cobra Coverage

Can You Deduct Medical Insurance Premiums / Health ...

When you leave your job or suffer certain qualifying events, your employer must notify the health plan administrator within 30 days. The plan administrator must then inform you about your rights and the process for making a COBRA election within 14 days of getting the notice.

Employees and their dependents have at least 60 days to elect COBRA coverage, and each person who qualifies can decide independently whether to elect coverage. So, for example, if you were insuring yourself and your spouse, you could continue coverage only for yourself, only for your spouse or for both of you.

In order to maintain your COBRA rights, you can be required to make your first insurance premium payment within 45 days from when you sign up for coverage, and then make subsequent payments in a timely manner.

If you have questions about the coverage, contact the COBRA administrator or your former employers human resources department.

Maybeif Your Healthcare Costs Are High Enough

For some Americans, health insurance is one of their largest monthly expenses, leading them to wonder what medical expenses are tax-deductible to reduce their bill. As the price of healthcare rises, some consumers are seeking out ways to reduce their costs through tax breaks on their monthly health insurance premiums.

If you are enrolled in an employer-sponsored health insurance plan, your premiums may already be tax-free. If your premiums are made through a payroll deduction plan, they are likely made with pre-tax dollars, so you would not be allowed to claim a year-end tax deduction.

However, you may still be able to claim a deduction if your total healthcare costs for the year are high enough. Self-employed individuals may be qualified to write off their health insurance premiums, but only if they meet certain criteria. This article will explore tax-deductible medical expenses, including the criteria for eligibility.

Leaving Or Losing A Job Typically Means Losing The Employer

How to claim tax back on your medical expenses!

When that happens, you could buy a medical plan from a private insurer or from the federal or state marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act of 2010. But the premiums could be higher, especially if your employer covered a portion of the monthly premium costs as many do. And the benefits might not match what you had through your employers plan.

Another option is to continue on your employers plan and shoulder the total costs yourself. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, or COBRA, allows you to temporarily extend your coverage at your own expense under your employers group health plan for you and your family. Although this can be a less stressful and less time-consuming alternative to finding your own health coverage, it can be a costly option.

Typically, youll have to pay 100% of the premium costs the portion you paid before losing your job and the portion your employer paid plus an additional 2% for administrative costs. And if you receive an 11-month extension of coverage for a disability, your expense may be as much as 150% of the total cost of coverage.

Still, if you need to maintain the same level of benefits as you had while employed, COBRA can help you do that at least temporarily. And you may be able to defray some of the expense by deducting qualified COBRA premiums on your federal income tax return.

Lets look at how COBRA works, and how you might be able to deduct your COBRA premiums.
