We claim for all of the above for my wife so we keep everything organized in a folder so when it comes time to do her income tax return her medical expenses are ready to go.
The worst thing you have to do is find everything but its not that hard if you have to ring up the pharmacy or your doctor but you may have to pay for doctors letters or notes as applicable.
Typically this is what we do for my mother-in-law so we know exactly how much she paid for her prescriptions although keeping the official receipt is ideal.

Where Can You Buy Travel Insurance
Comparison sites: a good place to shop around and see the best deals. But try to use at least two different sites, as they dont always use the same criteria or cover the same providers. And remember, cheapest is not necessarily best. Theres no point in getting the cheapest policy if it doesnt pay out when you need it. Find out more in our guide about How to buy insurance using comparison sites.
Insurance brokers: they can help you get the most suitable travel insurance for your circumstances, particularly if you could be considered higher risk . See our guide on when to use an insurance broker.
Find a broker on the British Insurance Brokers Association website
Buy direct: travel insurance policies are available from a range of providers, including insurers, banks, supermarkets and travel companies. But insurance bought as an add-on to your trip is typically more expensive, so make sure you search the market before you buy.
Remember to check if you already have travel insurance in place. For example, it might be part of a packaged bank account you hold.

How Far Do I Need To Have Travelled To Be Eligible For Claiming Medical Expense Travel Credits
Anyone who has had to pay for parking at a hospital knows how expensive it can get. While it would be nice to be able to deduct those expenses, unless you traveled more than 80 km for medical care, your parking expenses arent deductible.
To claim transportation and travel expenses with the CRA, the following conditions must be met:
- There were no equivalent medical services near your home
- You took a direct route
- It was reasonable for you, under the circumstances, to travel to the place you did for those medical services
If you traveled at least 40 km to get medical services, you can claim the cost of public transportation . If public transportation isnt available, you may be able to claim vehicle expenses.
If you traveled more than 80 km , you can claim vehicle expenses, accommodation, meals, and parking expenses.
Whether you traveled more than 40km or 80 km, if a medical practitioner has certified that you cant travel without help, you may also claim the travel expenses you pay for an attendant.
What Travel Records Should I Keep
You should keep ALL travel expense records and receipts, even if you receive an allowance. Itll help ensure you claim everything youre entitled too at tax time.

Medical Expenses In Canada: Breaking Down The Costs
Canadian healthcare cost inflation continues to rise rapidly with each passing year. While newer data isnt available yet, between 2004 and 2014, medical expenses rose by 54%, significantly higher than housing , clothing and food . However, in Canada, public healthcare covers only about 70% of the total medical expenses, while the remaining is split between private insurance and self-contribution. A recent report shows that those without private coverage spend over $5,000 per year on out-of-pocket medical expenses. This may include:
With steep healthcare bills, many Canadians choose to cash in their retirement savings early or rely on financial support from their children or extended family. In fact, a 2016 Sunlife Canadian Health Index suggests that half the surveyed Canadians experienced one or more serious health issues, and 42% of them suffered some degree of financial hardship.
Do I Need To Keep A Travel Diary
If you are away from home for more than 6 consecutive nights, you should keep a travel diary to record where you were, what you were doing and the start and end times of your activities.
Example travel diary entries:
- 6:00am Flight to Sydney arrive 8.30am
- 8.30am 9:00am Uber from Sydney Airport to Darling Harbour
- 9:30am 4:00pm Trade Conference
- Overnight at The Hyatt, Darling Harbour.
If you dont have a travel diary handy, no problem! Download a travel diary template from the page.
Its a good idea to keep a record of your travel and expenses, even when you arent required to keep a diary. Its very easy to forget details about expenses months after they happen.

Life & Health Insurance Offered By Td
TD Accident and Sickness Insurance can provide financial coverage to help you and your family in the event of a covered critical accident or illness resulting in disability, a serious injury, or death. Supplement any existing coverage you may already have through life insurance, employee benefits, or your provincial health care plan. Although these payments may not be tax deductible, benefits are received tax-free.
Here Are Some Additional Examples Of What Is Not Allowed By The Ato:
- Like the example above, if you travel to a work-related conference in another city and stay an extra night to visit a friend, you cant claim for any costs related to that extra night.
- If you travel with your partner or children, you cant claim any travel or accommodation costs for them.
- You cant claim an add-on flight that is not related to your work trip. For example: If you had a work trip in Mackay, you cant claim a flight you took to the see the reef in Cairns.
- You add on a small work event while on holidays. For example: You are on holidays for 2 weeks in Europe and while youre there you take the opportunity to attend a 2-day work related conference. You can claim the costs of the conference, however, you cant claim any travel or accommodation costs related to the trip because the trips primary purpose is a holiday, not business.

Medical Expenses And Taxes What Can You Claim
You may claim a tax credit for medical expenses when preparing your income tax return. How much is it worth to you? What qualifies as a medical expense? In my 45 years of doing tax returns, I consider the medical expense credit as the most common tax credit under-claimed by taxpayers, especially the mileage claims, out-of-province travel insurance premiums and assisted living costs for infirm residents. Although this article is quite complex, we hope it is easier to read than the Canada Revenue Agency Income Tax Folio S1-F1-C1 available to you free from the Canada Revenue Agency . I also recommend their publication RC4065, Medical Expenses. See the CRA Folio index for other medical and disability information. If you pay someone to do your tax return based on time, read this article on how to Organize your Medical Receipts to save them time in trying to figure out all of your receipts.
If you have missed claims in past years, you are allowed to amend prior year returns for up to 10 calendar years after the error or omission.
Other Medical Expenses That Are Tax Deductible
The IRS will let you take a deduction on any medical expenses paid out of your own pocket that were ordered by a doctor or health care professional. For a complete list of acceptable medical expenses, you can visit the IRS.gov website. But, some common expenses include:
- Long-term care
- Contact lenses
- Birth control
Along with these direct medical expenses, the IRS will also allow you to deduct any travel costs that you may have incurred when going to get medical care. For example, if you have a physical therapy appointment that is one hour from your residence, you could deduct the cost of gas as a medical expense.

What Types Of Auto
For an auto-related business expense to be written off, it needs to be considered both necessary and ordinary. While mileage is perhaps the biggest deduction that youll be able to take, its not the only one you should know about.
The only time that you can deduct mileage is when your employer doesnt already reimburse you. If youre being reimbursed already, you might still qualify for write-offs for the following actual expenses that youve incurred throughout the year:
- Insurance premiums
- Uncovered claims
So even if youre not eligible to write-off the miles youve driven for your employer, you could still have other deductions that can help lower your tax liability when youre driving your car for business.

Home Insurance Deduction For Home Business
For those that operate a home business, certain home business expenses can be deducted on your return. There are some income tax deductions that are specific to home businesses and not all home businesses qualify. Because there are a number of guidelines and conditions, it is important to verify on the Canada Revenue Agencys website what the most up-to-date home office tax deductions are.
Form T2125 is used to complete your Calculation of business-use-of-home-expenses. Make sure that you are aware that the expenses you claim on your T2125 form cannot be claimed anywhere else. If your home is used as your principal place of business to earn income, meet with customers or patients, you may be eligible to claim business-use-of-home-expenses. However, it is important to note that you can only claim a portion of the expense.
For example, if you have a 15×15 foot office in your 2,000 square foot home, you would need to calculate: 225/2000 = 11%. The 11% would be the portion you can claim as a business expense and the remaining 89% is considered your personal use portion. Gather all of your home office expenses such as electricity, property taxes, heating, phone, internet, repairs, and your home insurance and calculate your deductible business portion.
