If you plan to claim any medical expenses on your income tax return in Canada then you best be saving receipts, all of them.

Although you dont have to send them in with your income tax return if they audit you or ask for proof you need to prove it.

We claim for all of the above for my wife so we keep everything organized in a folder so when it comes time to do her income tax return her medical expenses are ready to go.

The worst thing you have to do is find everything but its not that hard if you have to ring up the pharmacy or your doctor but you may have to pay for doctors letters or notes as applicable.

Typically this is what we do for my mother-in-law so we know exactly how much she paid for her prescriptions although keeping the official receipt is ideal.

How Far Do I Need To Have Travelled To Be Eligible For Claiming Medical Expense Travel Credits

Anyone who has had to pay for parking at a hospital knows how expensive it can get. While it would be nice to be able to deduct those expenses, unless you traveled more than 80 km for medical care, your parking expenses arent deductible.

To claim transportation and travel expenses with the CRA, the following conditions must be met:

  • There were no equivalent medical services near your home
  • You took a direct route
  • It was reasonable for you, under the circumstances, to travel to the place you did for those medical services

If you traveled at least 40 km to get medical services, you can claim the cost of public transportation . If public transportation isnt available, you may be able to claim vehicle expenses.

If you traveled more than 80 km , you can claim vehicle expenses, accommodation, meals, and parking expenses.

Whether you traveled more than 40km or 80 km, if a medical practitioner has certified that you cant travel without help, you may also claim the travel expenses you pay for an attendant.
