  • Carrying a letter from your doctor detailing your condition.

Insurance Plans Cover Almost All Types Of Cancer

Twinsburg couple issues a travel insurance warning

Almost all types of cancer are protected by cancer insurance, with the exception of skin cancer. The claim would be rejected if the cancer was caused by a sexually transmitted disease like AIDS or HIV. A cancer insurance policy would not cover you if you have a pre-existing condition. This policy has a waiting period that requires the submission of bills in order to receive claims. Cancer insurance is a valuable asset that protects you from massive debt if you are diagnosed with the disease.

Speak to your doctor or nurse

Ask your doctor or nurse about how travel plans might affect your medical treatment. They may be able to suggest when is good for you to travel, and help you think about where to go and how long to go away for. Your doctor may advise you not to travel, or to delay your trip if it isnt safe for you. If youre unsure how your diagnosis or treatment could affect your travel plans, speak to our Specialist Nurses, in confidence, on 0800 074 8383.

Think about how youre feeling

Your cancer or treatment may make you feel tired or unwell. If possible, wait a few months after treatment before planning a trip. You may need to urinate more often after treatment and some treatments, such as chemotherapy, can make you more sensitive to the sun or increase your risk of infection. This may affect where you go, how long for, what you do while youre away and what you need to take with you.

See our Travel timeline for a breakdown of things you may want to do if youre planning to go away.

What Counts As A ‘change In Health’

Technically speaking, a wide range of events could conceivably be described as a change in health from catching a cold to being diagnosed with diabetes.

Insurers have different requirements on what needs to be reported to them and this can sometimes also vary depending on the type of policy you buy.

Some insurers don’t require you to update them about your health unless you’ve been advised by your doctor not to travel.

Others require that you let them know if your symptoms have led to tests or a medical investigation – and others expect you to get in touch if you’ve received any medical advice at all. If you have any concerns about this, you should check your policy wording or contact the insurer.

What Questions Will Insurers Ask

When you talk to insurers, you may be asked some difficult or upsetting questions about your health. For example, they may ask about the likely outcome of your cancer . This can sometimes seem insensitive. However, insurers may need to do this to decide whether they are able to offer you a policy, and how much it will cost.

Depending on how you feel when talking about the cancer, you may find it easier to contact only one or two companies at a time. Or you could contact an insurance broker or financial adviser who can do the research for you.

Claims Procedure And Claims Payment

You need to follow a hassle-free and straightforward process for settling the claim:

Claim NotificationA written claim or notice should be submitted within 7 days of the potential loss or when the loss begins. In any event, this should not be delayed for more than 30 days.

Submission of Claim Form or EvidenceThe claim form, along with the documents required for evidence, should be submitted within 30 days of the loss. Nonetheless, if you are able to furnish a valid reason for not submitting the documents on time, your claim might not get rejected. Usually, this is acceptable if the circumstances were not under the control of the insured.

Supporting Documentation and ExaminationAll the documents and medical records related to your treatment should be submitted within 15 days of your discharge from the hospital. Failing to submit the same might be acceptable under exceptional circumstances.

Claim SettlementIf all the documents are found to be valid and credible, we will provide you with the claim in a lump sum as soon as possible.

You must get the insurer’s approval for any course of treatment before it goes ahead. If not, the insurer may refuse to pay.

After Brexit, where the UK officially left the EU with a deal in place, things have changed. You wont be able to apply for an EHIC anymore but, if you already have one that was issued before the end of 2020, itll still be valid until the expiry date.

However, the UK government has introduced a replacement called the Global Health Insurance Card . If you dont have an EHIC, or once yours expires, you can apply for a GHIC here, and it should arrive within 10 days. The GHIC will offer the same cover as the EHIC did in EU countries.

The European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card allows EU citizens reduced-cost or free medical care when they are on holiday in:

  • All EU countries

What you need to know about the EHIC

  • Its free
  • Apply online around 4 weeks before youre due to travel
  • You need to have the card with you
  • Every individual or member of the family needs their own card
  • It only covers unexpected medical treatment you might need
  • If you need continued treatment for an ongoing illness while you’re abroad, such as regular injections, the EHIC covers this
  • You might have to pay for some things at the time and then claim the money back later
  • Not all public health systems cover the full costs
  • It doesnt cover you if you are living abroad
  • You should still have travel insurance if youre going to the EU. The EHIC doesnt cover everything. For example, the cost of transporting you home in an emergency.
  • The EHIC is valid for 2 years from the date its issued.
  • It is not automatically renewed so youll need to renew it before it runs out.
  • You dont need an EHIC card to get healthcare while on a short visit or holiday to the UK. You can show a driving licence, passport or a similar document to prove youre resident in Ireland.

How do I apply for the European Health Insurance Card?

  • In person at your local health office
  • Online but only if you already have a medical card or drug payment scheme card

It usually takes about 10 days to get the card, but its best to apply a month before you travel to makes sure you get it.
