Can You Go On Holiday Without Travel Insurance

What If I Cant Have The Covid

Under the Package Travel Regulations, travel companies are required by law to tell you about the health and safety requirements at your destination. So they have to inform you if you need to provide proof of Covid-19 inoculation. But they arent required to offer you a refund if you book, and subsequently refuse the vaccine.

If theres a medical reason for doing so and you have evidence of this from your doctor, you may still be allowed into the country. For yellow fever, for example, GPs can issue a medical exemption form thats typically accepted.

But if you choose not to have the vaccine, whether on medical grounds or for another reason, and decide not to go on the holiday as a result, this is likely to be considered disinclination to travel, and standard terms and conditions apply if you choose to cancel.

If youre unable to be vaccinated against Covid-19, you may want to hold off on booking a holiday until the situation is clearer.

Who Needs Travel Insurance

Most policies are designed to cover the most common traveler concerns, including trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and travel delays. Travelers who buy coverage want to protect themselves from a financial loss before or during their trip.

A policy with Trip Cancellation protects a travelers financial investment if they are unable to travel for a covered reason. A trip insurance policy can cover 100% of your prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses if you have to cancel for a reason listed in the policy. In addition to cancellation benefits, many travelers need medical coverage while they are traveling. A travel medical insurance policy can provide medical benefits at an affordable premium for travelers who dont have medical coverage at their destination, or for those who just want additional coverage outside of their primary health insurance.

You Have So Many Plans For Travel Insurance How Do I Decide Which One To Purchase

We have different plans to suit your individual needs based on the amount of premium you are willing to pay up front, your age and also the amount of risk you want to share in case you need to use the insurance. Most travel insurance plans are package plans that include various coverage like trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, lost or delayed baggage, medical coverage, medical evacuation etc. Please look at the side by side of various plans that we offer, look at coverage limits for different features and see which one meets your requirements and choose accordingly.

How Do I Purchase Travel Insurance Coverage Can I Ever Be Turned Down

Travel insurance may cost between 4-10% of a trip’s price. For example, for a trip that costs $5,000, travel insurance might range from $200 to $500 depending on the coverage. Before you purchase this insurance, consider the following:

  • What are the chances you’ll be impacted by severe weather or another event?
  • How much are you willing to pay for a back-up plan?
  • Do you have questionable health or is a loved one ill?

If you cannot afford to cancel and rebook your trip or your health insurance doesn’t cover you abroad, you may want to consider travel insurance. You typically may not need travel insurance for short trips close to home.

Travel insurance is offered in a competitive market.  You have the right to shop around for travel insurance from companies available in your area but a company also has the right to turn down your application for coverage.

In order to obtain a travel insurance policy, you must fill out an application to help the insurance company learn about you, your trip, and the risks the insurance company would be responsible for if they insure you.  After reviewing the information, the insurance company will use its own standards, known as underwriting guidelines, to decide whether to issue you a policy, and the rate it would charge for the coverage.

When Can They Go Away Without You

If going abroad, the laws are different depending on which country your teen is going to. For instance, under-18s travelling to Portugal must have travel authorisation from their parents and could be refused entry if they cant prove someone is taking responsibility for them during their stay. Other countries, such as Spain and Greece, are more lenient but you should check with the countrys before booking.

Its also worth checking with the airline as they all have different rules when it comes to under-18s travelling without their parents.

Travel Insurance Cover For Cancelled Travel Plans In 2020

COVID-19 threw many travel plans into disarray in 2020. If you were one of the many Australians with a trip booked, hopefully you had travel insurance, and have been able to claim on some or all of your losses. But it can depend on what your policy covers, and when you bought the policy.

  • People who bought travel insurance before COVID-19 became a “known event” may have been covered for medical expenses arising from contracting the disease overseas, and may even have been covered for cancellation expenses.
  • People who bought travel insurance after the disease was a known event may not have been covered for medical or cancellation expenses relating to contracting the disease, or from changes to travel plans resulting from quarantine measures, for example.

On 18 March 2020, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated alert levels to “Do not travel” for all destinations. On 25 March, it was escalated to a travel ban.

If your travel insurance policy excluded cover for pandemics or epidemics, or you bought the policy after COVID-19 became a known event, then your travel insurance wouldn’t have covered losses incurred as a result of coronavirus or the travel bans.

But it pays to speak to your insurer before cancelling, because if they don’t cover cancellation, rearranging your holiday dates to a later time may be a more cost-effective option.

Doesnt My Holiday Company Include Insurance In The Package

Some holiday companies give you the option to buy travel insurance at the same time as you book your holiday or your flight. While this may be convenient, it’s best to shop around to see whether the policy you’re being offered is good value.

You need to check that there is sufficient cover for medical expenses, valuables, cancellation and curtailment. You may be able to find a comparable policy that is cheaper.

How Is Coronavirus Spread

According to the CDC, coronavirus disease 2019 is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. The virus spreads easily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. The virus may also spread in other ways. Research is ongoing and travelers are encouraged to check the CDC website for the most up-to-date information.

Can I Get Insurance That Covers Covid19 For When I Travel Abroad

Yes, many insurance companies are now offering policies that will offer some level of protection during the pandemic but as a rule of thumb, most will only offer medical cover and limited cancellation cover.

Again, research is the key. Ask questions before you buy a policy and generally, the cheaper the policy, the less protection it will offer.

If possible, look for policies offering at least 2m of medical cover, at least 3,000 of cover for cancellation and importantly if booking a DIY trip, scheduled airline failure insurance that will pay out if your airline goes bust.

Its vital to get insurance as soon as you book your trip – that will give you some protection should the worst happen before your holiday.

What Are Travel Providers’ Cancellation And Rebooking Policies

The table below covers the cancellation policies of major travel firms, split into your rights when the firm cancels and your rights when you cancel this applies for usually inflexible tickets.

Be aware though that the situation is changing fast, so it’s best to double-check with your travel provider directly before making any decisions:

What Are The Rules For Visiting The Common Travel Area

The Common Travel Area is a term which covers the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Travel within the CTA is not considered international travel.

Fully vaccinated adults or under-18s travelling from the UK to other CTA destinations may not need to do any travel-related testing or quarantine on arrival, but the rules do vary, so you need to check before arranging a trip.

  • Read the rules for journeys to
  • Read the rules for journeys to the Isle of Man
  • Read the rules for journeys to
  • Read the rules for journeys to

As long as you’ve not been outside the CTA in the previous 10 days, you do not have to complete a passenger locator form, take any Covid tests or quarantine on your return to the UK.

If that is not possible, purchase the policy with the trip cost equal to the money paid so far and once you book your flight, contact us at to get the total trip cost changed. Be prepared to provide your policy number. In this case, make sure to change the trip cost within the 7-21 days of initial trip deposit requirement in order to get the pre-existing conditions exclusion waived.

Accidental Death And Flight Accident Coverage

If an accident results in death, disability, or serious injury to the traveler or a family member accompanying the traveler, an accidental death and flight accident policy pays benefits to surviving . Flight accident insurance provides coverage for accidents and deaths occurring during flights on a licensed commercial airliner. General exclusions will apply, such as death caused by drug overdose, death resulting from sickness, et al.

Accidental death coverage may not be necessary if you already have a life insurance policy. However, benefits paid by your travel insurance coverage may be in addition to those paid by your life insurance policy, thus leaving more money to your beneficiaries.

Can I Stay With People I Don’t Live With

There is no longer any requirement for social distancing, and no limits on how many people can stay together in holiday accommodation or private homes in England, Scotland or Wales.

However people are still advised to meet others outdoors or in well-ventilated spaces wherever possible.

There are still some restrictions in place in Northern Ireland:

  • 10 people from three households can meet and stay indoors in private dwellings and holiday accommodation
  • Unlimited households can meet outdoors
  • Social distancing of 1m remains for many indoors activities, including restaurants, retail and shopping centres
  • No social distancing laws outdoors, or on public transport, but 1m recommended

The Northern Ireland Executive is due to discuss easing remaining restrictions at its next meeting on 1 September.

My Credit Card Offers Some Protection Isnt That Good Enough

Travel credit cards, even the very best ones, offer only limited protection. Some cards offer coverage for lost or stolen items, medical expenses, and trip cancellation but only if you booked your trip with that specific card.

In my experience even if your card covers some things, that coverage limit is often very low. That means youll have to pay the difference out of pocket .

Bottom line: dont rely on credit card coverage. While its nice to have its protection as a backup, I wouldnt rely on credit cards for my primary coverage when abroad. Its not a smart choice.

Do You Need A Covid Vaccine To Go On Holiday Abroad

As we dream of our next holiday, its natural to wonder what that will look like given .

As the UKs coronavirus vaccine programme is well underway, with over 15 million Brits full-vaccinated, theres been lots of talk about what the rules will be for those who abstain from getting a jab.

Vaccine passports are on everyones minds, and there are even rumours of countries refusing entry to visitors who cant prove theyve had at least one dose of the vaccine.

May 17 is a key date for holidaymakers, as Englands traffic light syste and green countries list is expected to be operating by then.

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have not said when they might ease their travel rules.

Heres what we know about travelling without a vaccine.

Will Free Accommodation Be Provided

If you’re stranded due to a cancelled flight which is leaving a UK or EU country, or it’s to the UK/EU on a UK/EU airline, then your airline must pay to put you up in the meantime, although you may need to pay and later claim this back. Keep hold of receipts and only expect reasonable costs to be reimbursed. If your flight doesn’t fall within this scope, check with the airline if it’s responsible.

For package holidays, trade body ABTA says providers are only obliged to put you up for three nights if your return trip is cancelled.

For travel by any other means, contact your provider. If you’re struggling to get help, you can also try contacting the UK embassy in the country for assistance.

Trip Cancellation Or Interruption Coverage

Trip cancellation insurance, sometimes known as trip interruption insurance or trip delay insurance, reimburses a traveler for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses. Providers vary on acceptable cancellation and interruption causes and the amount of reimbursement available. The most common acceptable reasons include illness, a death in the immediate family, sudden business conflicts, and weather-related issues.

Trip cancellation is beneficial when paying more upfront than what you’re comfortable losing. For example, if you pay $2,000 for a package tour and the tour’s cancellation policy stipulates that all but $100 is refundable upon cancellation, travel insurance will cover only the nonrefundable $100. Also, there is no need to protect a refundable airline ticket.

When Is The Best Time To Buy Travel Insurance

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you maximize your coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip.

The financially prudent thing to do is to buy insurance when you have money at risk. If you buy nonrefundable airfare, which most travelers do, your money is at risk right away. For  and tours, it may not be an issue until cancellation penalties start to kick in. That could be at six months prior to departure.

Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. Its best to contact us to add coverage as soon as possible after you make new trip payments to be sure you have coverage for your full trip cost.

What Is Uk Travel Insurance

The aim of travel insurance is to cover the cost of the unforeseen, such as illness and injury or theft of your personal possessions while you’re on holiday. It’s also designed to cover you if you have to cancel your trip before you go, or if you need to return early due to an emergency.

UK travel insurance is not a special type of policy it’s just normal travel insurance that happens to apply to domestic trips. When buying a single-trip policy, you can normally specify that you’ll be travelling within the UK. With annual multi-trip policies, the UK is normally included if you say you’ll be travelling in Europe or worldwide so you may already have cover if you have an existing annual policy.

Either way, the idea’s the same: UK travel insurance is supposed to provide extra protection for your staycation. However, while it covers many of the same things as overseas travel insurance, not everything’s the same…

I Got Drunk And Hurt Myself Will I Be Covered

Probably not! If you are doing something foolish , insurance companies will want to know if putting yourself at unnecessary risk led to the injury. If, after investigating, they find you did, they can deny your claim. Thats not to say that they expect you to be sober your entire trip, but lets just say youre unlikely to get reimbursed if youre drunk and decide that it would be a good idea to stand in the middle of the road and play chicken.

So, dont be foolish!

A Travel Companion Gets Sick Or Injured What Does Travel Insurance Cover

When you and your best friend take a trip to Patagonia, you go birdwatching while he takes an ATV tour. On your return to the lodge, a staff member comes running with some bad news: your friend crashed his four-wheeler. He may have fractured his femur, and it looks like he has a concussion as well. Can your travel insurance help?

If you purchased travel insurance that includes emergency medical and dental benefits, those benefits are only for you, the insured. So your travel insurance plan will not reimburse your friend for emergency medical expenses overseas, or help arrange payment to doctors and hospitals. The same goes for your emergency medical transportation benefits. Because those benefits are for you, the insured, they will not cover the cost of transporting your friend to a hospital or other appropriate medical facility.

However, there are a few ways your travel insurance plan may be able to help. One, because youre an Allianz Global Assistance customer, you can call the 24-hour travel assistance hotline for guidance. Our multilingual travel experts can direct you to the nearest qualified medical facility; serve as interpreters if you need help communicating with local doctors; and help you obtain emergency cash or get a message home.

Is There A Vaccine Passport

At the moment there is no vaccine passport but every country will be deciding over the coming months how they will deal with the pandemic.

Its long been necessary to have vaccinations against diseases like yellow fever, hepatitis A and B and typhoid for travel to some long haul destinations.

Over the coming years, it may be necessary to have a vaccine against Covid19 too but at the moment, there are no set plans in place.

My Cruise Has Been Cancelled Or Changed What Can I Do

Many cruise lines have cancelled trips or altered their itineraries to avoid stopping at ports in affected areas.

If you were due to travel on a cruise that has been cancelled, you’ll generally receive a full refund though check your cruise line’s policy directly. If you have consequential losses, you can follow the steps above to try and recover them.

If your cruise itinerary has been altered and you no longer want to travel as a result, your cruise line may let you cancel and get a refund or credit to spend on another cruise again, you’ll need to check directly to find out your options.

If you can’t get a refund this way and you had booked your cruise as part of a package holiday, you may have some protection under the Package Travel Regulations if you had a major alteration to your itinerary though it’s unlikely that changes to a couple of stops on a long cruise would count as “significant”.

The Association of British Travel Agents  says if changes “are significant in relation to the overall trip”, customers may be entitled to a refund.

It said: “With cruises, there is the cruising element with the facilities and entertainment on board as well as ports of call, and all aspects of the trip must be considered in any decision about the significance of any changes to the itinerary.”

Does My Insurance Cover Me In An Amber

Anyone planning to travel to an amber-list country should look it up on the Foreign Office ‘s country-by-country list.

Even though you no longer have to self-isolate on return if you are fully vaccinated, not all amber-list countries will be subject to the same FCDO travel advice.

If the FCDO advises against travel to a country, then travel insurance would almost always be invalid.

Some people in that scenario may go to a broker to find a valid policy for their destination.

If the FCDO doesn’t advise against travelling to a country, then the cost of medical treatment abroad would be covered. In most cases that should include treatment if you contracted Covid.

When travelling in European countries, it is always worthwhile to have an EHIC to cover healthcare.

Travel Insurance: Do You Really Need It For A European Holiday

Jill Papworth

Figures out this week on the rising cost of hospital treatment in foreign countries should put the wind up anyone planning to holiday abroad without a European Health Card and/or travel insurance.

If you fall seriously ill abroad and need hospital treatment, the average cost is now £2,040, up 6.25% year on year, according to research by Sainsbury’s Finance.

From an analysis of travel insurance claims, the most expensive country for inpatient treatment is the US, with the average hospital visit costing £6,000 last year, 10% more than in 2008. The next priciest is Thailand at £2,750, followed by the Canary Islands at £2,500. The cheapest country is Bulgaria, with the average visit to hospital costing £500, a 5% increase year on year.

Greece was the country where more holidaymakers required treatment than any other last year, followed by Turkey and Spain’s Balearic islands, including Mallorca, Minorca and Ibiza. Gastroenteritis was among the most common reasons for a hospital stay over the summer, with the average bill for inpatient treatment costing £1,200, while the most expensive hospital bills averaging £12,500 were for those suffering a heart attack. Outpatient treatment in a foreign hospital can also burn a big hole in the holiday budget, with average costs ranging from £200 to treat an insect bite and £275 for an ear infection, up to £450 for treating a head wound or bronchitis.

Your Trip Is Refundable

In response to COVID-19, many airlines and hotels have loosened their change and cancellation policies. Before you purchase a travel insurance policy, check to see if your trip plans have flexible change or cancellation policies.

Simply put, travel insurance protects your nonrefundable deposit. If your trip doesnt include nonrefundable reservations, you may be fine without a comprehensive plan.

What Doesnt A Travel Insurance Plan Cover

Based on the plan you choose and your ability to meet all eligibility requirements, there may be a few travel insurance coverages that are not included in your plan. For example, cancel for any reason coverage can be added to, but is not automatically included in some comprehensive plans, and vacation rental damage coverage is only included on a vacation rental plan. Make sure to carefully review what is included in the plan you choose.
