What Is A Cranial Cruciate Ligament

A ligament is a band of tissue that connects two bones at a joint. The cranial cruciate ligament specifically connects the thigh bone with the lower leg bone. This is also referred to as anterior cruciate ligament Cranial Cruciate Ligament Disease is the sudden or gradual failure of the ligament and is the most common cause of rear-leg lameness and degenerative joint disease. The severity of this condition depends on if it is a partial rupture or a complete rupture. The type of rupture also indicates whether it was an acute or chronic condition.

A major sign that the dog may have a torn ligament is if he is holding the leg in a partially bent position while standing, and the weakening of muscles in the rear leg is a sign that the leg is not being used properly. Certain breeds are more prone to ligament injuries, such as Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundlands, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Golden Retrievers.

Although it is not as prevalent in mixed breeds, they are not immune to it either. It is also common in obese animals that occasionally get strenuous exercise. Studies show that 5% of males neutered before 12 months and 8% of females develop ligament injuries later in life and that half the dogs that rupture a ligament in one leg will develop the condition in the other leg.

What Is Pet Insurance

Pet insurance helps you cover the cost of veterinary treatment if your pet falls ill or gets injured. Pet insurance providers will also usually pay out if your pet dies, is lost or stolen, harms someone or damages property.

Which? has analysed dozens of cat insurance and dog insurance policies, and thousands of pet insurance policyholders have rated the customer service of the biggest insurers.

This guide explains how pet insurance works, what to watch out for and what’s excluded from pet insurance policies.

How Pet Health Insurance Works

How to take a good photo of your pet
  • Waiting periods Your insurance cover wont pay until youve completed a waiting period. Most companies require at least 14 days after enrollment before reimbursing you for a vet visit that your pet needs for an illness.
  • Exclusions Pet insurance policies usually exclude specific conditions in the policys language. Be sure to read your policy before buying it, so youll know how your pet insurance works
  • Network restrictions Pet insurance companies generally dont have networks. However, some insurers may limit certain coverage to specific vets. Some may not cover your pet while you travel in Canada or Puerto Rico. We recommend insurers with no restrictions to ensure youre covered anywhere in the United States.

What Increases And Lowers Premium Costs

The average monthly cost of pet insurance with accident and illness coverage is $49.51 for dogs and $28.48 for cats, which partially answers how much a dog costs and how much a cat costs.

Pet insurance costs vary widely based on several factors, including the pets breed, gender, age, location, and your chosen coverage options and deductible.

  • Pre-existing conditions Pet insurance providers will not reimburse you for conditions your dog, cat, or other pet already had before you bought the pet insurance policy.
  • Preventative care add-ons Youll get the best value from an accident or illness coverage plan, but you could add coverage for preventative care. Policies that cover routine care and accident or illness care are called comprehensive coverage.
  • Pets age After your dog or cat reaches age 12, your choices for new coverage will diminish significantly. To have the most options, buy a policy before your pet reaches an advanced age.
  • Deductibles With many plans, you set the deductible, which is the money you must pay before your insurance policy kicks in. Watch out for per-incident deductibles. Per-year deductibles provide a better value.
  • Where you live Generally speaking, pets that live in urban areas will have higher pet insurance rates due to higher costs of veterinary care, among other socioeconomic factors. Some states may also have higher costs, such as New York or California.

Complain About Pet Insurance

Contact the provider’s internal dispute resolution department if:

  • you think the insurance was sold to you unfairly
  • from 5 October 2021, the person you bought your pet from did not wait four days after your pet purchase before selling you this insurance, or
  • your insurer rejects your claim.

What Are The Best Alternatives For Managing Pet Allergies

It may not be a surprise, but the best alternative for managing pet allergies is to prevent symptoms by avoiding exposure to pets.

When this isnt possible, you can minimize exposure by limiting the pet to certain rooms, keeping pets off of furniture and carpets, washing your hands after you touch the pet, and vacuuming regularly to remove pet hair. A HEPA air cleaner can also help prevent dust and dander from sticking to surfaces like curtains, furniture, and carpet.

While there are certain dog breeds that have been said to be less likely to cause allergies, theres no evidence of an allergy-free dog or cat. This is because pet allergens can be found just about anywhere, including in their fur, skin, and saliva. Even shorter fur can still carry dust and pollen.

Just because your pet has a pre-existing condition doesnt mean you dont qualify for pet insurance, nor does it mean you should forgo obtaining insurance. You should still enroll in pet insurance even though your pet has a pre-existing condition. If your dog or cat develops any other illness, or gets into an accident, not being covered could lead to significant out-of-pocket costs to get your pet the care they need.

Why Do Insurance Companies Refuse To Cover Pre

At first, it might seem as if insurance companies are being unfair to our pets, but let us think about the above situation for a moment. The idea behind insurance is protecting an individual from an unknown event that might happen in the future and result in some form of loss. For example, your car and your home are insured against future events, not on what has already happened, or even what is happening in the process.

Insuring a pet with a pre-existing condition would be unfair to the insurance company and result in some loss. Besides, if all insurance companies would cover pre-existing conditions then people would wait until their pets develop a problem before they bought any insurance.

Since pets do not speak our language, it is very hard for a pet to explain exactly what it is feeling, which is why you should take your pet to the vet for routine check-ups as often as possible. Having your pets medical history will often go a long way in proving that your pet did not have a pre-existing condition before the cover became effective.

Can You Get Pet Insurance For Pre

  • Generally no, you can’t get pet insurance for pre-existing conditions. If a condition exists or occurs before you take out a policy, it’s likely to be excluded from cover as a pre-existing condition.

However, there are exceptions. Some insurers can cover pre-existing conditions on a case-by-case basis. For example, Vets Choice states that if your pet hasn’t shown any signs or symptoms of a curable condition for a specific period of time , you can apply for that pre-existing condition to be waived.

Even if you can’t get cover for a pre-existing condition, pet insurance is still worth getting, not least because if your pet develops another illness while you hold a policy, you’ll be covered. It can also help pay vet bills for accidents and some even cover routine care treatments like dental and vaccinations.

How Does A Dog Get Infected With Heartworm Disease

When a mosquito bites a dog infected with Dirofilaria immitis worms, it picks up microscopic larvae or microfilariae and these incubate within it for about two weeks. The infected mosquito cannot transmit the incubating microfilaria in this period. After undergoing three stages of development within the mosquito, the larvae migrate to the mosquito proboscis and the mosquito can now transfer them to the next dog it bites.

The mosquito deposits the larvae, contained in a drop of mosquito saliva, on the new hosts skin. The larvae then move into the body through the mosquito bite incision to burrow into the skin tissue. After incubating here for two weeks, they move to the chest and abdomen muscles for a further incubation of two to three months. The now young adult heartworms next migrate into the bloodstream and, after about six months, mature into male and female adults that can grow up to 12 to 14 inches in length. These adults live in the right ventricle of the heart and in the pulmonary artery, and they mate and produce microfilariae. The microfilariae, unless they are transmitted to another host, die off in about two years, but the adult worms can live for seven years inside the existing host, and subsequent mosquito bites will only increase the number of worms.

Liver Disease in Dogs: Causes, Symptoms, Stages, and More

As is the case with any time that your pet is ill, follow up with the veterinarian is always part of the equation. The recovery process may be a challenge, but with your care and practical support, your dog can often resume a sense of normalcy. Your primary veterinary caregiver will remind you that patience as you await results is key with a diagnosis of any vestibular complication.

Remain calm and caring at all times. Offer comfort, warmth, and attention. Aid your dog as necessary with his balance needs as he navigates his new ‘wobbly’ life. Dietary changes might be suggested, as will a follow-up visit at the clinic a few days after the initial appointment. It should be noted that a head tilt may remain, even after your pet recovers. Relapse of vestibular disease may occur, depending on the underlying cause.

Have You Visited Your Vet In The Last 12 Months

Your policy terms and conditions require you to have a documented visit to the vet in the 12 months before you purchased your policy. Your pet must be examined and documented by a veterinarian for coverage to start. You should get this done as soon as possible so you don’t find yourself without coverage when you need it most.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy Insulin For Dogs

If you dont have pet insurance cover for your dog and he or she is diagnosed with diabetes, then you might have to buy insulin for your pet after a consultation with your vet.

The costs can be quite high, which is why I always recommend you have pet insurance whilst your dog is still healthy and free of diabetes.

The amount of dog insulin required will depend on the size of your dog and how severe their diabetes is.

As a rough guide, you would be looking to pay monthly for insulin with prices being anything up to $90 in the US, and £65 in the UK based on 2017 prices.

Disorientation Questions And Advice From Veterinary Professionals

Chuckie Howard

Chuckie Howard’s Owner

In dogs of Chuckies age, the most common cause of disorientation is vestibular disease which may occur without any apparent reason and may resolve itself within ten or so days without medical intervention other times the there is a primary cause such as head trauma, poisoning, tumours or liver disease and the primary cause would need to be treated in order to reverse the symptoms. I would keep a close eye on Chuckie over the next week and if there is no improvement or you see a development of other neurological symptoms visit your Veterinarian. As for his gas problem, not all gas is released when in the house most often the gas is released just before defecation so I wouldnt be too concerned about it at this point unless it started to cause him abdominal pain. Can You Take Out Pet Insurance After Diagnosis

  • Yes, you can take out pet insurance after the diagnosis of an illness, but you won’t be able to claim for any treatments related to that condition rather, it’ll be listed as a pre-existing condition by your insurer and excluded from cover. When you make a claim, insurers will ask for the medical history of your pet. You can get this information from your vet.

Will Pet Insurance Continue To Cover An Illness If I Renew The Policy

It depends on the type of cover youve bought and the vet fee limits of the policy. See how does pet insurance work? for more details. If youre unsure whether an existing illness will be covered if you renew your pet insurance policy, check with the provider. But you cant switch providers and expect to get the same cover again.

Can You Have Two Pet Insurance Policies For The Same Pet

Dog reunited with owners after three years missing

Pet insurance companies do not encourage people to have two policies for the same pet at the same time.

Insurers’ policy documents often state that if they find you have two policies they will refuse to pay a claim. So if both companies discover this, you may not be able to claim on either.

Some pet owners choose to overlap policies when they are switching to make sure they have cover during the 14-day exclusion period mentioned above.

This mean they’ll be paying for two policies at the same time and there may be a risk the insurer won’t pay the claim if they find out the owner has two policies.

If they do claim with their old insurer during the overlap period their new company is likely to treat the issue that was claimed for as a pre-existing condition and may not cover it for the rest of the policy.

We’ve removed the 14-day waiting period if you switch to us from another provider with no gap in cover.
