Dental Care for Babies!

Babies can develop cavities before they can even walk. Teeth usually come in around six months, but they can emerge as early as three months. As soon as your baby has at least one tooth, you and your childs dentist will want to watch out for cavities.

Tooth decay is a serious disease that can cause infection in other parts of the body. Whats more, children who have had tooth decay are more likely to have dental problems as teenagers and adults.

When you prevent cavities early on, you help ensure a life of healthy smiles for your child.

Health Insurance For Newborns: Once Your Baby Arrives

Once your child is born, a few services are automatically covered by your insurance. These include an Apgar test to screen for any heart or lung problems, eye drops and vaccines to prevent complications, a screening for various health conditions, and a hearing test. You are also entitled to a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours for a vaginal delivery and 96 hours for a caesarian section, regardless of whether youre at an in-network hospital. You may choose to leave early, but your provider cannot force you to leave or refuse to cover your stay.

Afterward, when your baby is finally in your arms, you have a little bit of time to breathe more easily. Thanks to the Newborns Act of 1996, children are covered under their parents insurance for the first thirty days following birth or adoption. If the parents have separate coverage, the baby can be covered under either plan.

During this time, you should contact your insurance provider to learn how to add your baby to your plan. You may also apply for a Special Enrollment Period for up to sixty days following your childs birth. This allows you to freely enroll in any plan on the Marketplace, even if you are currently uninsured. If you qualified for Medicaid due to your pregnancy, but lose eligibility after giving birth, you will continue to receive coverage during this period.

As long as your child is enrolled during this period, they will be covered with an effective starting date of the day they were born.

When Should I Enroll My Child In A Dental Insurance Plan

If you decide your child will be well-served by dental insurance, youll want to enroll in the plan as early as possible. Most dental insurance requires a waiting period between enrollment and the start of coverage. The average wait time is about six months.

Your childs first dental visit should occur either after their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever occurs first. Most teeth first appear between six and 12 months. If you enroll your child in a dental insurance plan at birth, its entirely possible theyll need to visit the dentist soon after coverage goes into effect. At the very worst, youll pay for about six months of coverage you might not use.

Another benefit to early enrollment is youll potentially limit restrictions on pre-existing conditions. Most insurance plans dont cover dental problems which existed before enrollment. The longer a person goes without dental insurance, the greater their chance of developing a pre-existing condition which wont be covered later.

When To Schedule The First Dental Checkup

Do Babies Need Dental Insurance?

Mostly, babies start to teeth at around 6 months. According to the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a child must see a dentist within six months after his first teeth appear.

Although you might think its early, it is good to schedule the first checkup when your baby is one year old or six months after his first tooth starts sprouting. If you see any visible problem or even a cavity, do bring it up at the doctors visit. Family history or sleeping with a bottle in the mouth can lead to early tooth decay in your baby. Baby teeth need to be healthy just as permanent teeth as they stay until the kids reach the age of 10 to 12 years.

Dental Insurance Vs Out

Even if parents understand the importance of taking their young child to the dentist, they may still wonder when to add them to their dental insurance, or if its even necessary. The answer to both questions is different for everyone. Parents must look at the nature of their dental plan and the costs of the insurance premiums compared to what a dentist will charge.

What Are Dental Savings Plans

Another option is a dental savings plan. Available for everyone, including children, dental savings plans provide members with immediate discounts of 15% to 60% on dental care. A wide variety of potential discounts are available including savings on many preventative, minor and major procedures. Plans are accepted at over 100,000 dental professionals nationwide.

Unlike dental insurance, dental discount savings apply to dental problems you had before purchasing the plan, so you dont have to worry about restrictions on care. Plans activate within 72 hours after purchase. You can get the dental care you need right away.

While children do benefit from dental insurance in some situations, its not the only option. Medicaid, CHIP and dental discount plans also help make dental care affordable for your children. Early dental care planning for your children will lead to a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Affordable Care Act And Dental Care: Children

The ACA specifies that dental care for children is an Essential Health Benefit. That may sound like having some sort of dental coverageinsurance or otherwiseis required for kids by law. But what it really means that pediatric dental coverage must be available for purchase in the ACA Marketplace. Parents dont have to purchase dental insurance under federal law.

In the federal and state run Marketplaces, pediatric dental plans are available as part of a health care plan, as a bundled offer or as a stand-alone plan. In the federal Marketplace, you cannot purchase a stand-alone dental plan without purchasing health care insurance. Stand-alone dental plans are not covered by federal subsidies.

A few states do or are considering making kids dental coverage mandatory. If your state runs its own Marketplace, it will also determine other variables like deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance. To see your states specifics, click here

Baby Teeth Can Get Cavities Too

You might think that cavities are only something to be worried about with older children or teenagers. But according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 21% of children aged two to five had untreated cavities¹. Whats more, according to a CDC 2018 study dental caries are the most common chronic disease among youth aged 6 to 19 years². These cavities can be caused by natural sugars in fruit juice and even milk, and of course sugary snack foods and sweets.

Early Childhood Caries can erode the baby teeth of even the youngest child. While baby teeth do eventually fall out, untreated ECC can lead to infections that spread to other parts of the body. Neighboring teeth can shift into the empty space, causing adult teeth to crowd as they come in. Cavities can also be painful and uncomfortable for babies and toddlers³.

The American Dental Association views ECCalso called baby bottle tooth decayas a significant public health issue in select populations. To help prevent ECC, the ADA urges parents to bring their children to a dentist within six months of the first tooth emerging. The ADA also recommends that nursing mothers take more initiative with their own dental care to decrease the risk of a child developing ECC.

Tooth decay in babies is not just caused by eating unhealthy snack foods. Unrestricted nocturnal breastfeeding, excessive use of a sippy cup and failure to periodically check a babys teeth are some innocuous mistakes that can lead to ECC.

Should I Add My Infant To My Dental And Visual Insurance Plans

While it’s important for your infant to have health insurance, it may not be necessary to tack on dental and visual plans just yet.

Do infants need dental and eye insurance? My baby is 5 weeks old so for the next calendar year he will be 3 months to 15 months. Can’t decide whether I need to add him to my dental and eye insurance plan and I need to decide by tomorrow. TIA!

I would not worry about it. The first dental visit is at a year but its coverage is unnecessary. And I would skip the eye coverage the first year as well. Most eye doctors start doing exams at four unless your pediatrician sees an issue.

I added my two months old daughter under my dental and health insurance plan right after her birth, but its just because my employer fully cover the cost for my family member. Otherwise, i think i wouldnt get those until one year old.

I didnt put my babies on the dental or eye until the year they would turn two

I recommend waiting at least the first year and add during open enrollment. My daughter did get her teeth early and has some genetic issue with enamel so she did go to the dentist at 18 months and then again at 2.

  • Vision Benefits For Kids

    Prevent Tooth Decay Archives

Children up to age 19 can get an eye exam every year under the Affordable Care Act.

If your child has a vision problem, your insurance might help with treatment, though the benefits vary depending on your health plan. Where you live matters, too. In some states, you may have to pay some of the cost of your child’s glasses or contacts. Check your health plan’s summary of benefits carefully to be sure. You will likely have to use a provider from your planâs network in order to receive these benefits.

If you qualify, programs like Medicaid and CHIP — for families with low incomes — usually cover the cost of glasses or contacts to correct vision problems.

Individual Or Employer Insurance Plan Doesnt Cover A New Baby

If you have your health insurance policy, your baby is born into coverage, right? Sort of. For the first 30 days of your newborns life, he or she will be covered as an extension of the mother, under her policy and her deductible. Starting on day 31 of the newborns life, your baby will need to have his or her policy. That policy could simply mean adding your newborn to your employer insurance plan, or turning your individual plan into a family plan but dont forget that takes time, paperwork and money. If you dont have a plan in place to get coverage immediately after your little one is born, youll miss out on having some of those first few well-baby checkups completely covered. If your baby goes even one day without coverage between being on the mothers insurance and being added to his or her own insurance plan, you could be subject to an additional 20% cost penalty during the first year of your babys health insurance coverage which is already the most expensive year for health insurance.

Is Pediatric Dental Coverage Included In Exchange Plans

Carriers selling off-exchange health plans are required to include pediatric dental unless they have determined that you have pediatric dental from another source.

    • Health insurance & health reform authority

    Q. Can you explain the requirements for pediatric dental coverage? Ive read that its an essential health benefit that has to be covered on all health insurance plans, but Im also hearing that its optional?

    A. It depends. There is no penalty for not having pediatric dental on your policy. And in most exchanges, you can purchase a plan without pediatric dental. But off-exchange, carriers are required to include pediatric dental unless they have determined that you have pediatric dental from another source.Pediatric dental coverage is one of the ten essential health benefits that the ACA has required on all individual and small group plans since 2014. But section 1302 of the ACA explains that a policy sold in an exchange without embedded pediatric dental coverage can still be a qualified health plan as long as there is also a stand-alone pediatric dental plan available in the exchange.
