How Do I Add A Permanent Driver
The driver must be with you when you contact us so they can give consent for the DVLA to check their details.
We need their full name, date of birth, driving licence number and date they passed their driving test. We also need full details of any endorsements, driving restrictions, motoring convictions, claims and driving bans or disqualifications within the last five years.
Drivers in England and Wales can find these details on the GOV.UK website . Drivers in Northern Ireland can find these details on the paper counterpart to their photo driving licence. We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to extra checks and conditions.
All proposed drivers will be subject to Motability’s policies on who can drive your vehicle. They must also meet our eligibility rules. This is regardless of whether they’re added at application or during your lease.
Please note, drivers on your policy are not automatically transferred over to a new vehicle. You will need to add them on to your new vehicle if you wish them to drive.
You can have up to three drivers at any one time on the policy. If you already have three drivers on your policy you will need remove one to add another.

What Is Normal Wear And Tear
We would expect that three years of motoring would result in some light scuffing, scratching or stone chipping to your car, particularly on the bodywork, wheels, interior trim and luggage areas. Damage caused by wheelchairs, callipers, crutches or walking sticks would also be classed as fair wear and tear and we would not expect it to be repaired.

How Much Does A Mobility Car Cost
The cost of a mobility car will depend on which one you choose. As mentioned, there are up to 2,000 cars available on the scheme. Around 80 of these cost less than the mobility allowance and around 140 cost the same. This means theres a choice of around 220 cars where you wont need to pay a thing besides the fuel you use.
If you wish, you could choose a car thats more expensive than your allowance and make up the cost yourself. This would need to be paid as a one-off lump sum known as an advance payment.
Vehicles that require no advance payment include Renault Zoe Iconic, SEAT Leon, Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper. Some vehicles, such as a Ford Focus, start from £45. More expensive vehicles include Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which require an advance payment of at least £1,119. Once the advance payment has been paid, the rest of the payments will be covered by the Motability Scheme so you dont have to worry about it.
Advance Payments For Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Standard Features To Look For In A New Passenger Vehicle
Before purchasing a new vehicle, always sit in it first to make sure you are comfortable.
Check to see that you can enter and exit the vehicle with ease. If possible, take it out for a test drive. How well does the car fit your body? To prevent air bag-related injury, you should keep 10 inches between your breast bone and the steering wheel, which contains the drivers side air bag. At the same time, youll need to be able to easily reach the pedals while maintaining a comfortable line of sight above the adjusted steering wheel. Also, make sure the vehicle provides you with good visibility in all directions front, rear, and sides. Your dealer can demonstrate the use of adaptive features, such as adjustable foot pedals and driver seats, which can help ensure a good person-vehicle fit. Check to see if the model you are considering purchasing has good crash test results and is resistant to rollover. Visit our Ratings section or call NHTSAs Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 to obtain government crash test results and rollover ratings for specific makes and models.
When selecting a vehicle, look for and ask about available features designed to improve both the comfort and safety of drivers with disabilities. Some of these features are:
- High or extra-wide doors
- How long will it take to modify the vehicle?
- Can the equipment be transferred to a new vehicle in the future?
- Will existing safety features need to be modified to install the adaptive equipment?

Evaluating Passengers With Disabilities
Driver rehabilitation specialists may also provide advice on compatibility and transportation safety issues for passengers with special needs. They determine the type of seating needed and the persons ability to enter and exit the vehicle. They provide advice on the purchase of modified vehicles and recommend appropriate wheelchair lifts or other equipment that would work in your vehicle.
If you have a child who requires a special type of safety seat, evaluators make sure the seat fits your child properly. They also make sure you can properly install the seat in your vehicle. What Should You Look For To Get Handicap Vehicle Car Insurance Coverage
If you are a disabled driver with a wheelchair accessible vehicle, you are entitled to coverage, as long as your disability does not interfere greatly with your ability to drive safely.
The law protects physically challenged persons just as it protects those who are not.
You must shop and compare insurance plans and fully disclose your disability, to get the best rates on your insurance.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says that discrimination does not occur if insurance companies make their decision on your coverage on vehicle modifications, an extreme disability that increases your risk factor, or other situations that raise your risk level.
However, if you present the proper information regarding your handicapping condition, communicate with and ask questions, and compare policies, there is no reason why you cannot obtain suitable insurance for your wheelchair accessible vehicle.
Remember that your disability does not excuse you from following the law, and you are still fully responsible for driving safely and obeying all traffic rules.
Before you ever set out on the road, make sure you have your car covered. At the very least, that means liability insurance. The Insurance Information Institute has compiled a list of liability requirements for each state. Search for your state below to see what youre required to have.

If any driver has an issue with their driving licence, such as ongoing medical investigations, please contact us as soon as possible. Only drivers listed as permitted drivers on the Certificate of Motor Insurance are covered to drive your Motability vehicle.

Do I Need To Keep My Scooter Or Powered Wheelchair At My Address
You don’t need to store it at your home address when it’s not in use. It is, however, a requirement of your policy that you secure it when left unattended. This includes secure overnight storage and communal buildings.
If you can’t secure it in a building when it’s left unattended, you should ensure that it’s locked and secured to an immovable object by a padlock, chain or other suitable security device.
The Mot Is Due On My Car What Should I Do
MOTs must be completed as normal. Your dealer should be in touch to arrange this, but please contact them directly if your test is due and you have not heard from them. If they are unable to complete your MOT for any reason, you can contact Kwik Fit and make an appointment at one of their centres.
If you are unsure when your MOT is due, you can check this at gov.uk/check-mot-history.
If your MOT has expired, it can legally only be driven to a pre-booked MOT appointment. You will need to arrange this with your dealer, or with Kwik Fit at one of their centres.
If you are self-isolating you should book the MOT for after the period of self-isolation is over, or ask a named driver to take the vehicle to be tested.
Please note, if you are due to hand back your car, the MOT will need to be completed before your lease ends.
