Travel Medical Insurance Faqs
What is Primary vs Secondary coverage with travel medical insurance?
Primary Coverage pays first before any other coverage you might have. This means you claim directly with the insurance company, and they handle it from there.Secondary coverage pays after any other insurance has been used. So, if you did have some coverage from your home health insurance, that would be used first, then travel medical would cover after that.If you have secondary coverage and no other insurance provides coverage, your secondary coverage essentially becomes primary coverage. The main benefit to Primary is the ease of claims as there are fewer companies to deal with.
What is the difference between Travel Medical and Trip Insurance?

Aaa Health Insurance Quotes
Although the AAA website looks promising for getting a health insurance quote, once you choose this option and select get a quote, you are directed to a phone number that you must call in order to get it.
If you prefer not talking with an agent, then this can be a bit frustrating. AAA claims that they dont offer a quote tool because of a Beall Research & Training survey that indicates that 62% of people wanted to talk to a live agent rather than using a quote tool. If thats accurate for you, then this is an excellent choice.
If you prefer to start with a quote tool, then you can do that right now by entering your zip code. You will receive several health insurance quotes from reputable companies in a matter of minutes!
What Is Not Covered By Travel Insurance
There are common things not covered by travel insurance. Make sure you read a policys exclusions so youre not caught by surprise later. For example, a travel insurance policy could have medical coverage but exclude pre-existing conditions. So if an existing condition flares up during your trip, the travel insurance policy wont cover it unless you purchased a pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver.
High-risk activities may not be covered, such as scuba diving. Nor are problems that happen because you were drunk or using drugs.
Medical tourism is also a common exclusion, so if youre going abroad for a face lift, travel insurance wont cover the hospital bills or aftercare.

Comparing Travel Insurance Providers
When comparing travel insurance policies, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. These include:
- Pricing: Pricing is one of the most significant factors when comparing travel insurance policies. Look for a provider with low rates that doesnt skimp on coverage.
- Policy types: Depending on where youre traveling and how long youre staying, different policy types may work best for your situation. For instance, you may need a different policy for a short, week-long trip than you would if you plan to travel abroad for several months.
- Coverage limits: Travel insurance plans have coverage limits for trip cancellation, interruption, and medical expenses. Look for a plan whose coverage limit matches the amount youve spent on your travel plans.
- Exclusions: Some travel insurance plans come with exclusions. If youre worried about a particular event or accident, make sure its covered before you pay for a plan.
- Customer satisfaction: Customer satisfaction is also an important factor when purchasing a travel insurance plan. Look for a provider with high customer satisfaction ratings and a history of good customer service.

Difference #: Travel Medical Insurance Focuses On Medical Emergencies Trip Insurance Focuses On Cancellation Coverage
With a Travel Medical plan, the focus is on emergency medical and evacuation costs.
If you are abroad and have an accident or become ill, it would cover medical costs for you. Emergency dental treatment is usually included and emergency transportation services are also covered.
Emergency medical evacuations will get you out of a remote area and transported to a place where you can receive proper medical care. If you are killed or die on your trip, the repatriation coverage will ensure your body is properly transported home or to a funeral home nearby.
With Trip Insurance, you are mainly concerned with losing all of your pre-paid money if you need to cancel your trip.
Trip Insurance covers cancelling for sickness of a family member, hurricanes, home fire, jury duty, job loss, etc. It covers cancellations for unexpected and unforeseen reasons.
It also covers interrupted trip where you need to come home early, lost or stolen bags, flight delays, baggage delays, medical, and evacuation.
When most people think of travel insurance, they think of cancellation coverage and not wanting to lose money of they need to cancel.
Travel medical plans often include some coverage for baggage loss or interrupted trips, but the coverage limits are much lower than with Trip Insurance so it is not considered a primary coverage.

Tips For The Pandemic Traveler
Many travel insurance policies offer good medical coverage, but not all cover Covid-related problems. If thats important to you, make sure to verify that the plan youre buying specifically covers you in case you contract Covid, says Kasaro Barto, spokesperson for Squaremouth.
Squaremouth recommends a minimum of $100,000 in emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage in order to account for Covid-19 related medical care and evacuation expenses.
Sudden travel bans and unexpected quarantine requirements can also derail your trip, but standard travel insurance may not cover these problems, warns Barto. Buying cancel for any reason coverage will give you some reimbursement no matter what your reason for canceling.
But add cancel for any reason coverage quickly if you want it, advises Barto. You may have only a couple weeks before the option expires for your plan.
Also, some travel destinations abroad have medical coverage requirements for incoming travelers. Confirm the medical coverage requirements youll need for your destination before you buy a travel insurance plan.

What Are The Types Of Travel Medical Plans
Travel medical plans come in three types:
For most trips, you would need single-trip Travel Medical insurance.
Aaa Guaranteed Issue Whole Life Insurance
For seniors and those with pre-existing conditions, AAA also offers final expense insurance, which is a guaranteed-issue whole life insurance policy. Since there are no health-related questions and you don’t have to complete an exam, all applicants between ages 45 and 85 are accepted.
However, coverage is limited for the first two years that the policy is in force. If you die due to something other than an accident during the first two years of coverage, your beneficiaries would only receive the sum of premiums paid plus 30% interest.
In addition, rates for guaranteed-issue whole life insurance are typically even higher for the same amount of coverage than those for simplified issue policies. We only recommend AAA’s final expense insurance if you need coverage but are unable to qualify for another type of policy.
AAA’s guaranteed whole life insurance does offer two unique benefits to your family. After your policy has been in place for at least two years, you and your spouse receive a free lifetime AAA membership. And if you add the travel accident endorsement, your beneficiaries would receive twice as large a payout if you die while traveling.

Aaa Homeowners Insurance Coverages
AAA homeowners insurance is not as widely available nor as fully featured as its automobile insurance policies. As with AAA’s auto insurance policies, there are a number of insurers that sell insurance under the AAA brand. But in general, homeowners can expect to find the standard coverages associated with home insurance. This includes coverage for your home’s structure and roof, your personal property, and liability coverage in case someone is injured inside your home.
Some AAA house insurance providers also offer extended coverages for an additional fee. More frequently available options include additional protection for valuables, such as jewelry and furs, umbrella insurance, coverage for living expenses if your home is uninhabitable, and insurance for natural disasters, such as earthquakes.

Does Aaa Offer Affordable Auto Insurance Rates
The cost of car insurance with AAA varies depending on which state you’re in. Because AAA is actually a federation of automobile clubs from various states, the coverage that gets advertised as “AAA car insurance” is provided through a number of state-specific insurers.
Each of these state insurers has its own underwriting process and local market conditions that will impact your quote for auto insurance. For illustrative purposes, we chose to gather quotes from California. Keep in mind that if you live elsewhere, your rates will likely be somewhat different.
Monthly car insurance premiums in California
In California, AAA’s auto insurance rates were close to the statewide average, costing just under $160 per month, or under $1,900 per year, for a full coverage auto insurance policy. Out of the three other insurance companies we also looked at, only Geico returned lower rates.
If you are interested in comparing AAA and Geico, you can learn more on our AAA vs Geico comparison page.
It’s also worth noting that AAA was one of the more generous insurers when it came to accidents. Both the graph and table above indicate that compared to AAA, Progressive and State Farm raised their rates far more for a driver who had at least one recent accident on record. This may be an advantage if you’re worried about a recent incident impacting your auto insurance premium.
