Vacation should be relaxing, but there are plenty of things that can go wrong: Your flight is delayed or your luggage gets lost. You may wind up booking last-minute hotel accommodations or repurchasing the lost items, and find yourself spending a lot of extra money you didn’t plan for.

But it can be a lot less expensive managing these travel disruptions if you paid for eligible travel, such as the flight, hotel or car rental, with a credit card. Many of the best travel credit cards offer travel insurance that can cover the cost of unexpected expenses.

The specific terms of the travel insurance benefits vary by card issuer. In most cases, you have to pay for your trip in full with your credit card, though some card issuers only may require a portion of the trip to be paid with the eligible card. And card issuers often implement different limitations on the coverage you receive and what expenses are eligible for protection. Make sure you review the specific terms before booking travel.

Below, Select reviews the types of travel insurance offered as a credit card benefit, along with a list of cards that provide these kinds of travel protections.

The Platinum Card From American Express

Bank of America Business Credit Card Reviews

The Amex Platinum card removed travel accident insurance in 2020. However, the card offers one of the most generous emergency evacuation insurance of any card. Theres no cost cap and benefits are extended to immediate family and children under 23 or under 26 if enrolled full-time in school. Best of all, you dont even have to use the card to pay for the trip.

You must be on a trip less than 90 days in length and at least 100 miles away from your residence. A Premium Global Assist administrator must coordinate everything in order not to incur any cost. The benefit will also pay economy airfare for a minor under 16 to be returned home if left unattended, pay for an escort to accompany that minor if required to get them home, and get a family member to the place of treatment if hospitalization of more than 10 consecutive days is expected.

Other American Express cards offer access to the Premium Global Assist Hotline, however, anything they coordinate will be at your expense. Make sure you read your Amex cards benefits guide carefully.

What Is The Difference Between Trip Cancellation And Trip Interruption Coverage

The main difference between trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage is timing. Trip cancellation insurance protects your trip from when you make the initial payment to the time of your scheduled departure. On the other hand, trip interruption insurance covers your trip from the day of your scheduled departure to your scheduled date of return.

    Premium Chase Credit Cards

Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card (Overview)

The Chase credit cards in the table below provide trip cancellation and interruption insurance with relatively high maximum coverage amounts.

Up to $5,000 per covered person with a maximum of $10,000 per trip$95

I obtained the following information from the Chase Sapphire Preferred Cards guide to benefits dated Dec. 1, 2019 . I believe the other Chase premium cards listed above provide similar benefits. But check your cards guide to benefits to ensure your coverage is the same.

When you use an eligible Chase card to pay for select travel expenses, you and your immediate family may be covered when:

    • You charge a portion of the cost to your Chase credit card.
    • The trip will not exceed 60 days in duration .

Suppose you used Chase Ultimate Rewards to pay for part or all of your eligible trip expenses. In that case, Chase will reimburse you the redemptions monetary value or 1 cent per point if the value doesnt appear on your itinerary or confirmation.

    Your Car Insurance Provider

Some car insurance policies offer optional RV insurance. You should call your insurance agent to review your coverage options. Your auto policy may automatically extend to tow-behind trailers or the motorhomes that you drive if the rental period is shorter than 30 days. In other instances, you may have to purchase an add-on policy for your rental period.

Another option is by using a specialty insurance provider such as Good Sam RV Insurance. You might even stay at a Good Sam campground during your RV road trip.

If youre going to be buying a camper or RV, specify if youre staying for leisure or full-time. Your monthly rates are different depending on how frequently you use your RV.

Also, make sure you have the minimum coverage amounts for your state. You may decide to get more extensive coverage amounts for additional peace of mind.
