How Does Travel Insurance Work For Existing Medical Conditions
The concept of “reasonably foreseeable events” gets complicated when you’re talking about existing medical conditions. For instance, if you’ve been treated in the past for back problems, and then a slipped disc forces you to cancel your trip, is that something you should have foreseen?
Here’s how we look at it. Travel insurance from Allianz Global Assistance does cover most existing medical conditions if you insure the full cost of your trip within 14 days of paying your first trip deposit and if you’re medically able to travel when you do so. We define an existing medical condition as an illness or injury that you, a traveling companion or family member were seeking or receiving treatment for, or had symptoms of on the day you purchased your plan, or at any time in the 120 days before you purchased it.
This means that again, timing is everything. To make sure your existing medical condition is covered, get your doctor to certify you’re medically able to travel beforeyou buy travel insurance. And don’t wait to buy coverage; make sure you purchase your plan within that 14-day window after making your first trip payment .
Premium Chase Credit Cards
The Chase credit cards in the table below provide trip cancellation and interruption insurance with relatively high maximum coverage amounts.
I obtained the following information from the Chase Sapphire Preferred Cards guide to benefits dated Dec. 1, 2019 . I believe the other Chase premium cards listed above provide similar benefits. But check your cards guide to benefits to ensure your coverage is the same.
When you use an eligible Chase card to pay for select travel expenses, you and your immediate family may be covered when:
- You charge a portion of the cost to your Chase credit card.
- The trip will not exceed 60 days in duration .
Suppose you used Chase Ultimate Rewards to pay for part or all of your eligible trip expenses. In that case, Chase will reimburse you the redemptions monetary value or 1 cent per point if the value doesnt appear on your itinerary or confirmation.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Covid
There are different types of travel insurance that come with various coverage amounts, additional endorsements that can be added to your policy, and things that are not covered altogether.
Here are some examples of things that are typically covered under a travel insurance policy:
- Sickness, injury or death
- Job loss
- New vaccine requirements
While some of these might apply to a COVID-related event that could affect your tickets and other reservations, its important to know what the fine print entails when you are buying travel insurance under the current health advisory.
Standard travel insurance policies usually only cover an event if the purchaser is the one who contracts COVID-19. Things like family members getting sick, flight cancellations, and their quarantine requirements may not be covered if youve got the bare minimum amount of coverage.
What Is Not Covered
Countries with Level 4 travel advisories: Some insurers disclose that if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country, you will not receive coronavirus-related coverage. With cases surging in various countries unexpectedly, the list of Level 4 countries is constantly changing. Before booking a trip and purchasing a policy, make sure to check that the country does not have a Level 4 advisory.
Fear of getting sick while traveling: Canceling a trip because youre afraid youll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. Travel insurance providers have a list of standard reasons that qualify for cancellation, including: car accident, jury duty, terrorist act, military duty and other extenuating circumstances. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip , youll want to look into the cancel for any reason, or CFAR, supplemental upgrade, which is offered on some travel insurance plans. When you purchase CFAR, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance. Not all plans offer CFAR as an option, so research before you purchase if you’re interested in this add-on.
COVID-related events not directly related to you: If you planned on going to a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, your travel insurer will not reimburse your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.
Can You Get A Refund On Your Travel Insurance
If your trip gets cancelled because of a government travel ban, several travel insurers are allowing people to reschedule their travel insurance or cancel and claim a credit towards a future premium. Ask your travel insurer what they can do for you.
Travel insurance policies have a 14-day cooling off period. If you change your mind in this period, you can cancel your policy and get your money back from the insurer.
Otherwise, some insurers may decline to refund, reschedule or provide a credit for unused travel insurance premiums.
However, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority considers a credit or refund of your premium a fair outcome where:
- you got a refund or credit from all of your travel providers, so there’s nothing left to claim on your travel insurance
- your travel insurance policy has a COVID-19-related exclusion that prevents you from claiming on the policy.
So if your travel insurer has knocked back your request for a credit or refund, lodge an internal dispute with the insurer, noting AFCA’s stated approach. If they still refuse, escalate a complaint to AFCA.

How Do I File A Claim
If youre in a situation where you believe you may be eligible for your credit cards travel insurance, your first step should be to read your cards guide to benefits and/or call the number on the back of your card. Even if you believe your insurance will cover you after reading your cards guide to benefits, it is usually a good idea to call the number on the back of your card. Doing so will let you ensure youre covered, learn about deadlines for making your claim and determine what documents youll need to collect.
The benefits administrator will usually walk you through the necessary steps for making your claim. Luckily, many card issuers now allow you to make claims online, so you may not even need to send in any physical documents. Be sure to pay attention to any deadline for starting your claim and uploading documents, as well as any specific requirements for requested documentation.

Finding Travel Insurers Covering Covid
Generally, the policies underwritten by U.S.-based travel insurance providers vary by state, trip information, travelers ages and other various details. Travel insurance comparison site is one of the very few comparison sites that allows you to filter by policies that offer coronavirus coverage.
To find a policy that specifically covers coronavirus-related losses, input your departure and return dates, your main destination and select Search for Policies Now.
In our example, we will input the following details: A $3,000 paid-in-full trip to Greece leaving on Oct. 9 and returning on Oct. 18 by a 40-year old U.S. citizen who is a resident of California. The policy will include trip cancellation coverage.
When incorporating the Coronavirus Pandemic filter, the results reveal that 40 out of 84 policies include this coverage. You can select additional filters, such as cancel for any reason, if youre looking for that optional upgrade.
The results can be sorted by price, top sellers, top reviews and insurance providers, offering plenty of ways to easily search for the specific policy youre looking for.
Each of the top three policies includes coronavirus cancellation and medical coverage, and displays the associated limits. Trip cancellation coverage is $3,000, representing the value of the trip. The price of the policy is clearly stated and ranges from 4.1% to 5.4% of the total trip cost. This range represents very typical travel insurance costs.
What Isn’t Covered By Credit Card Travel Insurance
Each credit card travel insurance policy is different, so it’s important to look at your specific card’s benefits guide to make sure you know exactly what is and what is not covered.
Your credit card travel insurance won’t cover a trip that you don’t purchase with the card, though in some cases paying for a trip in full or in part with that card’s rewards points will qualify you for coverage.
Other areas where potential exclusions could crop up are covered reasons , covered trip length , and covered destination .
Car Rental Collision Damage Waiver
The Car Rental Collision Damage Waiver or Loss Damage Waiver is coverage that reimburses you for damage to your rental car or theft of the car while the vehicle is in your custody.
It can also cover loss of use of the rental car, which car rental agencies can charge you if the vehicle is damaged or stolen.
Car rental companies require you to purchase CDW/LDW coverage before you take possession of the rental car, unless you have the coverage elsewhere.
Several credit cards provide CDW coverage at no extra charge, and if you have this coverage you can decline the expensive car rental company option.

Is Credit Card Travel Insurance Good Enough
Theres no straightforward answer to this question. It depends, of course, on A) the coverage offered by the credit card, and B) your personal needs and preferences.
Heres what to ask yourself when determining whether you should buy an additional travel insurance policy to supplement your credit card.
Personally, I use to purchase travel insurance for international trips. Although the Reserve is one of the few cards to cover medical emergencies, it only does so up to $2,500 and since I currently dont have United States health insurance , I wanted more coverage than that. Its affordable, too: Earlier this year, I paid $304 for an 11-month policy that covers up to $50,000 in secondary emergency medical insurance and $25,000 for reoccurrences of pre-existing conditions.
