How Much Medical History Is Needed For The Medical History Review

To complete the medical history review and to process claims, Embrace requires medical history for your pet from any vet they visited in the 12 months before the policy start date. If your pet is a puppy or kitten or recently adopted and doesnât have 12 months of records, we need all medical history for any visit theyâve had while in your care. The medical history we require includes doctor’s and/or chart notes in which the vet has recorded examination findings, petâs health status, and test results.

If your pet did not have a visit in the 12 months leading up to enrollment, they must have a full physical exam within the first 14 days of the policy. Along with the notes from that visit, any additional medical history you have from the 12 months prior to the policy should also be sent in. If you do not have any additional medical history, that is fine.

Chronic And Ongoing Conditions That Pet Insurance Covers

Some pet insurance plans operate off of a per-incident deductible, while others operate off an annual deductible, and still others have a per-incident, per-policy year deductible. What this means is the cost you are responsible for paying before your insurance kicks in. Dont wait until your pet is suffering from a chronic condition. Instead, do your research and if you have a breed that is prone to chronic conditions, then enroll your pet in a policy now, before it is too late to get them coverage.

Chronic conditions also include things like cancer and diabetes, which may or may not be hereditary. Either way, any condition where your pet needs continual care over a long period of time is considered a chronic condition. Keep in mind, too, that some deductibles work off a policy year, while others operate in a calendar year, meaning even if you just paid your deductible in October, you may need to pay it again in January. Check sample policy documents and read your own policy carefully to determine the terms around your deductible.

If you have a pet with a torn ACL, you may think it is too late to get the other knee covered. While it is true that some policies will not cover your pets knees once they have experienced an issue in one knee, other policies simply dont have this exclusion or have a waiting period. While it is best to insure your pets before issues occur, all is not lost if your pet does have an initial knee injury you have to pay for out of pocket.

Can I Change My Coverage Later

You can adjust your coverage at any time.

Downgrading your coverage means anything that gives you less coverage. This could include lowering your annual maximum, lowering your reimbursement percentage, or increasing your annual deductible.

You can also upgrade your coverage at any time however, your policy would be subject to re-underwriting which is basically like getting a brand new policy. You would have new waiting periods and any accident or illness that started before your upgrade date would be considered pre-existing.

How To File A Pet Insurance Claim

Submitting a pet insurance claim is pretty straightforward:

  • Pay the veterinarian for the services
  • Fill out the claim form your insurer provides
  • Submit the claim form via email, mail, mobil, app, or customer portal and wait for reimbursement
  • Insurers like Trupanion and Pets Best will pay your vet directly if the vets office has compatible software.

Unlike auto and home insurance, submitting a claim doesnt automatically mean your pet insurance rates will increase. However, the overall cost of veterinary care in your area may impact your rates, says Wymer of Pumpkin Pet Insurance.

Why Do You Need Pet Coverage

If your pet gets sick or is injured, they deserve the best care money can buy.

With all of the advances in veterinary care, there is a lot more that can be done for pets now than in the past, and you can get access to this care but not have to cover the entire cost if you have a pet plan.

Many pet owners take out pet insurance not only for peace of mind, but also so they can take advantage of the many treatment options that are now available, leaving them able to diagnose and treat conditions that may have gone unnoticed before, giving you many more years with your pet.

Veterinary medicine is advancing just like human medicine, and with better diagnostic capabilities and more options for care like chemotherapy and radiation, hip replacement and other things that previously would not have been thought of for animals, are now a reality.

With these advances, though, comes cost. In 2015, people spent almost $15 billion on veterinary care, and only a small fraction of those people had a pet insurance policy. Part of the issue is communication, and getting pet owners the facts and figures about life with and without pet insurance before they need it because then it is usually too late.

    Embrace Pet Insurance Review

Embrace is the 3rd highest rated pet insurance company in our list, and easily beat out the bottom 7, but are still a distance away from the #1 and #2 spots. Theyve earned the #3 spot for their high level of customer support, and the reputation that they have earned from other past customers.

One downfall that Embrace is facing is the way that they pay out claims.

While they state that all claims are paid within 5 to 15 days, it has been reported that you have to go through a bit of a hassle in order to actually get them paid, and Embrace likes to back on and not pay parts of the claim that they originally said they would in your policy.

They also fall behind in terms of the technology they use to allow customers to submit claims when compared to the top players in the industry.

With all this said, Embrace offers a wellness plan that their major competitors fail to do, so if you are looking to be reimbursed for your pets annual visits to the vet, Embrace may be a solid choice.

Embraces coverage does become a bit more limited when it comes to older pets, though, so you should keep that in mind if your pet is higher in age.

Should I Get Pet Insurance | Embrace Pet Insurance Review

Like any insurance product, youll want to know what youre buying so that you dont waste your money or have unpleasant surprises if you need to make a claim. Consider these questions when buying pet insurance:

    • Is reimbursement calculated based on the actual vet bill, a benefits schedule for specific conditions or usual and customary vet rates?
    • Is the deductible for each year or each incident?
    • Can you choose any veterinarian?
    • Can the vet be paid directly, or will you pay the vet and get reimbursement?
    • How long will reimbursement take?
    • Does the policy cover wellness, or can you add wellness coverage?
    • Are pet prescriptions covered?
    • Are there end-of-life benefits such as euthanasia and/or cremation?

No matter how much you guard your pet against accidents and sickness, keeping a pet healthy can be expensive. If the prospect of a large surprise vet bill worries you, pet insurance is a solution.

What Is The Best Way To House Train My Puppy

Positive reinforcement is the best and most effective way to train. Praise your puppy immediately when he eliminates in the appropriate location, dont wait until they come back inside. Praise may be verbal, physical or both and sometimes accompanied by a treat. If your puppy eliminates in an inappropriate area scolding with a sharp No can be effective, but only if caught in the act. Puppies have a very short memory and cannot correlate delayed scolding. Frequent trips outside before and after a meal will be the best time to train.

Plans That Cover End Of Life Expenses

Fortunately, some pet insurance companies pay for euthanasia and similar end-of-life costs. Some pet insurance companies will also pay out if your dog dies but will only pay the amount you paid for the dog or its current market value. Some will pay for euthanasia but not cremation will pay for both, and some will pay a portion, and the pet owner pays the balance.

Pet owners are advised to compare pet insurance companies to learn which ones cover these expenses, which ones dont cover it and how much each one covers. Here is a list of some of the most popular pet insurance companies, which ones will pay for end-of-life expenses and to what extent theyll pay. In most cases, pet owners will need to pay copayments or deductibles.

Does Pet Insurance Cover Cancer Care

As long as your pet is covered by pet insurance before a cancer diagnosis is made, most pet insurance companies will cover cancer care. If your pet has already been diagnosed, the cancer is considered a pre-existing condition. No pet insurance carrier covers pre-existing conditions. Therefore, the earlier you can insure your pets before they develop an illness or condition the better.

Most major pet insurance providers offer a variety of coverage plans. Cancer is often included in a specific plan or can be added as a rider. Most carriers cover even the most advanced treatments, subject to their individual exclusions for things like pre-existing conditions. Contact the insurance provider to ask which plans include cancer care. Make sure to check whether they cover diagnostics and testing and get a list of which cancer treatment options are covered.

Is Pet Insurance Worth The Cost

Pet Insurance Explained | Embrace Pet Insurance

Like medical coverage for people, pet insurance policies are complicated. Heres what we found when we analyzed the coverage from three health insurers.

Two years ago, Elizabeth Newsom-Stewarts cat Fawkes ate part of a lily plant leaf. Newsom-Stewart, then a veterinary student at Cornell University, immediately knew the danger he was in, and rushed him to an animal hospital.

Some lily plants are toxic to cats she says, and may cause kidney failure. Symptoms can take 12 to 24 hours to show. By the time kidney failure occurs, its almost always fatal.

Emergency treatment, which included three days in intensive care, medication, tests, and lots of IV fluids, cost $1,783. But just three months before, Newsom-Stewart bought pet insurance, and it covered $1,327 of the bill. And Fawkes, now 4, made a full recovery.

A serious illness or injury can take a financial toll, even when the patient is a pet. Cancer treatments can easily run $5,000 surgery to fix a torn ACL from, say, a poorly executed jump off the sofa can cost about $3,300. Pet insurance is sold with the promise that by helping to cover some of your pets medical bills, you wont be forced to consider economic euthanasia in the most dire circumstances.

But as helpful and emotionally comforting as it might be, is insurance really worth the price?

If you’ve got a pet, you’ve probably got pet fur or hair all over your home. Find the best vacuum to deal with the mess.

      Do I Need Pet Insurance

Whether or not to insure something or someone is usually a personal choice, with a few exceptions–auto insurance if you own a car, mortgage insurance until youve paid a home loan down to a certain point, and various profession-specific insurances. There is no statute on the books mandating the purchase of a pet insurance policy when you bring home a furry new member of the family. But just because its not mandatory doesnt mean its not a good idea.

One out of five cats can expect to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives–for dogs, the risk rises to one in four. Estimates of the cost of treatment vary according to breed, type of cancer, where you live, and treatment options, but the consensus is that it is not cheap. Diagnosis alone can run you $1-$2,000, with treatments ranging between $3-$10,000 and, of course, the ever-present possibility of a relapse.

And thats just cancer. Treatments can run from $250 for a sprain in a dog to $15,000 for acute kidney failure in cats. It is by no means certain that your pet will be afflicted by any of these or other conditions , so the question comes down to how much risk can you afford?

Though weve already warned against veterinary discount plans if youre shopping specifically for pet insurance, they do provide some cost savings for veterinary care. However, these plans really wont help you much if your pet is diagnosed with something serious and expensive. Remember Lupa…

      What Is Euthanasia

Euthanasia is the process of terminating the pets life in a way that is humane and comfortable for the dog or pet. Its often the method of choice if a pet is suffering from a terminal illness and no longer able to enjoy a good quality of life. The choice to euthanize a family pet can be difficult, but its often the best choice because its quick and painless for the animal.

Euthanasia can take place at home, at a veterinary clinic or in a pet hospital. Owners can also choose if they want to be absent for the procedure or if they want to be with the animal to the very end. Some owners pay the vet to come to their home to do the procedure, so the animal is in a familiar environment.

The procedure is relatively fast. The vet will administer a tranquilizer to relax and calm the animal. The animal will quickly become very tired and almost appear as though it is sleeping with its eyes open. This is followed with a legal injection that makes them unconscious and stops the brain functions. The pet does not suffer from any pain or discomfort.

When the procedure is done, owners can decide what they want to do with the remains. Some choose to bury it at home some choose to have the animal cremated, and others leave it up to the veterinarian to take care of the remains. Its all a matter of personal choice.
