What Does It Cover

A comprehensive policy for your life coaching business should cover the risks you are most likely to face. Those risks will vary by service, industry, and product however, the following coverages apply to most coaches:

  • Professional Liability Insurance: Also known as Errors and Omissions Insurance, Professional Liability Insurance protects life coaches against client claims alleging financial loss due to a service you provided, as well as lawsuits alleging negligence, misconduct, and failure to deliver services as promised. For example, if youre coaching someone on changing eating behaviours to lose weight and suggested theyll see a guaranteed difference that doesnt end up happening, your client could sue.
  • Commercial General Liability Insurance : Whether you work from home or have an office, mistakes can happen anywhere. Commercial General Liability Insurance can protect life coaches against common claims or lawsuits alleging third-party bodily injury , property damage, false advertising, and libel/slander. For example, if youre conducting a discovery session in your office with a client, and your clients chair suddenly breaks, causing them to injure their back. Should you be sued, CGL may cover legal defence costs and medical costs, regardless of the lawsuits outcome.

Do I Need To See My Doctor Before Visiting An Aetna Therapist

If you need to see your primary care doctor before visiting a Aetna therapist depends on your insurance plan type:

  • HMO or POS plan: Yes, you are typically required to see your primary care physician for a referral to therapy before Aetna will pay for services
  • PPO or EPO plan: No, you typically dont need to see your primary care physician for a referral to therapy before Aetna will pay for services.

This referral requirement is also called pre-authorization . Pre-authorization is a process where a health provider, in this case your therapist, must get approval from your insurance company before providing you with care in order for the services to be covered.

Your Summary of Benefits should indicate whether you need pre-authorization for outpatient mental health services.

Learning To Be Better Humans

Being both a psychotherapist and a coach, new clients often ask if they can pay for coaching with their health insurance. In the US, this is almost never possible.

The rare exceptions might be for cases of smoking cessation and weight loss programs, if and when such coaching is prescribed and supervised by a medical doctor. But in the extremely few cases Ive heard about where health insurance is paid, payments were made to clinics employing coaches, and not to coaches in private practice.

Health insurance pays for the treatment of a defined set of disorders. Even though a rocky relationship or the stresses of low life achievement may contribute to some mental health problems, such conditions are not covered by insurance. In fact, to be able to use health insurance you have to be given a diagnosis, and the only diagnosis that would remotely apply would be those that fall in the category of mental illness.

In effect, your health insurance company is telling you that to get coaching paid for by them, youd have to be mentally ill.

Many health insurance claims are electronically outsourced to workers in other countries to process, making your records susceptible to being hacked on the internet. A CNN reporter accessed her records in a live news hour to demonstrate how very easily this can be done.

For these reasons, its best to not even wade into the quagmire that is health insurance when seeking ways to pay for coaching.

Does Insurance Cover Coaching

Wondering if insurance covers life coaching? It is a common and understandable question. The fact that you can use health insurance to cover behavioral healthcare can make people wonder if insurance covers coaching, too. What many people are surprised to learn is that health insurance won’t even pay for many things that we think of as therapy let alone coaching. Here’s why:

Health insurance pays for the medically necessary treatment of an illness, injury, or disorder. That’s it.

Health insurance doesn’t cover therapy for the purpose of personal growth and self-actualization. Health insurance does not cover marriage counseling, premarital counseling, couples therapy, or family therapy solely intended to improve communication and strengthen relationships. It’s still incredibly valuable to do this work. Great coaching or therapy is an investment in your life, and it’s less expensive than you might think. But even therapy is not always considered medically necessary healthcare.

Health insurance only covers therapy that is focused on treating the mental health condition of the identified patient. If you’ve ever had a therapist submit claims to your insurance company for marriage counseling, or therapy they have diagnosed you with a psychiatric condition and then represented whatever type of therapy they were doing with you as being medically necessary treatment focused on reducing your symptoms.

How To Choose A Life Coach

If you want to find a life coach and are wondering what to look for before you dive in, it is important that you get someone who:

A. Has the proper training and accreditation

When it comes to training and accreditation, you want someone who not only went to proper schooling, but someone who has put in enough hours so that they have honed their skill.

B. Specializes in your specific needs

Many coaches now specialize in certain areas such as relationships, health, finances, career, and so on. Therefore it is important that you find someone who has dedicated their practice to a specific area that best suits your goals.

C. Fits your personality

Is it important that they are male or female?

Do you want someone who is strong and bold and will kick your butt? Or do you want them to be gentle and sensitive?

Is it important that they are playful? Or would you rather that they be more direct and serious?

Make sure you find someone who fits your personality because you are going to be spending a lot of time with them and you want to make sure your relationship flows naturally.

D. Local vs online

Is it important that you are able to meet with your coach in person?

Or are you okay meeting with them on the phone or video conferencing?

Some coaches provide online support while others dont.

E. Your budget

How much can you afford?

While some coaches may offer a sliding scale, others are more firm in their fees.

F. Does it feel right?

G. Are they sincere?

H. Are they confident?

Not all do.

Does Aetna Behavioral Health Cover Therapy

Health insurances offered through the health insurance Marketplace or through small employers are required by the Affordable Care Act to cover mental health services. While not required by federal law, the vast majority of large employers also cover mental health services.

While rare, your Aetna plan may not cover therapy services if:

  • Your health insurance plan was created before 2014, when the ACAs requirement that health insurance plans cover mental health services was enacted. There are other situations in which your Aetna plan may not cover the specific type of therapy service you are seeking, or where your coverage may not apply until you spend a certain amount on medical services first. What Is A Life Coach

Actor Bill Glass on Becoming Progressive Insurance’s ‘Parenta-Life Coach Dr. Rick’

A life coach is someone who helps you find clarity in what you want to achieve and then supports you along your journey of accomplishing your goals.

A good coach is someone who has dedicated their entire existence to personal development, spiritual growth, human behavior, mindfulness, wellness, and psychology so that they can become a master of the game of life.

This person has invested a great deal of time and money into their life and is now offering you an opportunity to learn from their successes and mistakes.

Their objective is to be your guide and support you along your journey of achieving success and fulfillment by facing your fears and improving upon your life skills.

Their mission is to be a catalyst and help you become your best self so that you can achieve your goals and live your dreams.

They are someone who is your advocate, truly cares about your well-being, and has your best interest in mind and heart.

A coach acts like a tuning fork that invites you to raise your frequency to match theirs so that you can attract more joy, love, happiness, and abundance into your life.

A coach also acts as a mirror reflecting back to you certain things you need to learn about yourself.

What To Expect From A Life Coach

The life coaching relationship generally works in two phases:

Phase 1 Discovery & Clarity

During the discovery and clarity phase, a coach will ask you some questions to learn more about who you are, what you want, and what has been holding you back from getting what you want.

This process can last anywhere from one to four sessions because it is a pinnacle moment in your life where you take a moment to pause and then pivot in a new direction.

For some this can be challenging because it is going to force you to look at certain beliefs and ideas about yourself that you may have suppressed or hidden for many years.

Phase 2 Chunking & Action

Once you have clearly identified what your goals are, a coach will help you chunk these down into bite size actionable steps and then hold you accountable through the process of achieving them.

Where the real magic happens with coaching is when they are able to help you breakthrough certain beliefs that may be holding you back or when they can inspire and motivate you to face your fears and step up into you becoming a better version of yourself.

Most sessions last between 45 to 60 minutes.
