With the rollout of various vaccines for COVID-19, many people are wondering if it will affect their life insurance policy or their ability to get life insurance coverage. To further complicate matters, there is information being shared on social media saying that if you die from a COVID vaccine, life insurance companies will not pay out a claim because the vaccines are considered experimental. Like many issues surrounding COVID vaccinations, there is a lot of misinformation floating around and being shared on social media and it is creating a lot of confusion. While we are not experts on COVID or COVID vaccinations, we can clarify how getting a COVID vaccine relates to life insurance. In short, a vaccine will not affect your life insurance policy, the ability to file a claim on your policy, or your ability to receive life insurance coverage .

Q: Can I Get Coverage If I Recently Traveled To Or Plan To Travel Internationally

A: Underwriting guidelines as a result of COVID-19 are evolving. For individuals who are applying for our MassMutual-issued policies, there may be additional questions in the underwriting process about international travel and potential waiting periods for a decision as a result.

Coverage eligibility for life insurance applicants with confirmed travel plans to State Department Level 3 or 4 countries will be postponed and require a 30-day waiting period after they return to the U.S. Once the 30 days have passed, individuals may reapply. This waiting period and applicable countries may change as we learn more. Additionally, if you have recently returned from international travel with an illness or respiratory infection, then a decision on coverage eligibility would be postponed until after the 30-day waiting period.

If you would like specific questions answered regarding your travel plans and if there will be a waiting period, our customer success team is happy to assist.

In recent weeks, weve received questions pertaining to risks of claim eligibility if a customer receives a COVID-19 vaccination.

When a COVID-19 vaccine has been given by an authorized health professional, side-effects or complications from the vaccine would not limit an individuals eligibility.

Government-approved COVID-19 vaccinations are tested to make sure theyre safe and effective. While some people have reported side effects after being immunized with a COVID-19 vaccine in Canada, those side effects arent necessarily related to the vaccine.

The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association has also released their positionOpens a new website in a new window – Opens in a new window on the vaccine as it relates to insurance coverage. They stress that vaccination is one of the most effective means to protect yourself and others from serious illness and death from COVID-19 and that receiving the vaccine will not affect your individual or workplace life, health or disability insurance benefits.

Getting Life Insurance During A Pandemic

For consumers, many questions abound as concerns over health and the lingering pandemic take centre stage. But if you already have life insurance coverage, you can breathe easier. With few exceptions, any manner of death is covered by life insurance contracts, including COVID-19. Exceptions may include deaths during the contestability period the first one to two years of your enrolment and suicide.

Will your premium go up? Not likely, according to the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. A spokesperson called the first wave of deaths within the normal range of volatility. But the impact of the second and third waves are still unknown.

If youre applying for a new policy, insurers havent changed their products yet, but they might consider exclusions if the pandemic proves to be worse than predicted. For now, you may face a deferral for your policy it wont take effect until any COVID-19 treatment is completed or youve tested negative for the virus.

Contrary to rumours, a COVID-19 vaccination will not affect your premium. Many people on social media claim that getting the vaccine will disqualify you from insurance or affect your payout because of the potential side effects. While insurance companies are setting the record straight, I think theyre too polite. Let me phrase it for them: These rumours are pure, unadulterated, anti-vaxxer gibberish.

Our Commitment To Our Employees And Investors

What is Canada Life doing to protect employees from exposure to COVID-19?

Were taking the situation seriously, and our Incident Management Team is actively monitoring the outbreak through our global threat monitoring system and government agencies, including the World Health Organization and Public Health Agency of Canada.

We communicate regularly with employees to remind them to remain vigilant, practice good hygiene, and immediately seek medical attention should they exhibit any symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

Our goal is to continue to provide a safe workplace for our employees, and to continue to serve our customers without interruption.

    To support this goal, weve:

    • Eliminated non-essential business travel, both domestic and international, with no travel to and from risk zones.
    • Cancelled all large meetings and events until the end of June, including conferences.
    • Enacted a 14-day self-quarantine in cases of illness, personal travel outside Canada, or contact with someone who recently travelled outside Canada, and are exhibiting symptoms.
    • Increased cleaning in all offices and limiting in-person meetings, including visitors to our offices, and asking those who are ill to remain home.

What if Canada Life employees get sick?

We have a plan for this, too. Many employees can work from home, and employees from other locations can fill in as needed if a particular office is affected. Meetings and business can be conducted with teleconferencing and videoconferencing.

Q: Can I Still Buy Life Insurance During The Covid

Coronavirus and Life Insurance: What Consumers Need to Know

A: Yes, you can still apply for term life insurance and, if approved, get coverage started immediately. If you need to take a medical exam to finalize coverage , please note there could be limitations in availability during this time. All applicants now have 120 days to complete the medical exam. And in many cases, you can have temporary coverage in place until you take the medical exam.

Please keep in mind that due to an increase in application volume and added review that may be needed during underwriting, it could take a bit longer to receive your final decision and offer.

    How To Get Life Insurance

There are different ways to get life insurance, which fall into two categories direct or through an agent. As the pandemic continues to progress, it might become hard to find a physical office to go to. This means that your best bet is to find a life insurance policy online.

The important thing here is to make sure you get multiple quotes from different providers and compare prices as well as the coverage you get for the price being quoted. If you decide to go through the direct route, you will need to shop around yourself. If you go through an agent or use an online comparison site, the work will be cut out for you.

You might also want to consider applying for temporary coverage. A number of life insurance companies offer this type of coverage so that beneficiaries can still get something should something happen to you during the application process. This can be a wise choice now more than ever as we are seeing longer waiting times for approval.

Major Canadian Insurance Companies Wont Cover Coronavirus Treatment For Travellers To High

This article was published more than 1 year ago. Some information may no longer be current.

Some major Canadian insurers will no longer cover emergency medical expenses related to the novel coronavirus for travellers who visit countries with high-level travel advisories.

Canadas largest insurance company, Manulife Financial Corp., told The Globe and Mail on Friday it will not cover any medical expenses related to COVID-19 under individual travel policies if customers go to a destination that was the subject of a high level government advisory before their departure.

Allianz Global Assistance Canada which earlier this week updated its trip cancellation policies due to COVID-19 also said it will not cover emergency medical treatment for customers who contract coronavirus in a country that had a level 3 or 4 travel advisory related to coronavirus before they left on their trip.

That limitation also applies to people leaving on cruises on or after March 9, as the company considers a warning from the Public Health Agency of Canada for Canadians to avoid cruise ships travel to be a Level 4 government advisory, Allianz spokesperson Dan Keon said.

Insurance is really there to protect for the unexpected in emergencies, said Joan Weir, director of health and disability policy at the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association.

That could change as new information emerges, she said.

How To File A Life Insurance Claim

After a policyholder dies, the beneficiary will need to file a life insurance claim by following these steps:

  • Obtain several copies of the death certificate.

  • Contact the policyholders agent or the insurance company for claim paperwork.

  • Send in the required documents with a certified copy of the death certificate.

  • After submitting a claim, the beneficiary can generally decide whether to receive payments in a lump sum or installments.

    Q: If I Contract Covid

    Does Medicare Cover COVID Testing?

A: Currently, the majority of COVID-19 cases are not fatal for younger, healthier individuals, which many of our customers are. And to access the accelerated death benefit rider, a policyholder must be terminally ill with a documented life expectancy of two years or less.

If a policyholder were to become terminally ill due to a severe infection from COVID-19, they can access 75 percent of their death benefit or up to $250,000, whichever is less. Please keep in mind that whatever funds are accessed will be subtracted from the overall life insurance policy payout made to beneficiaries. For example, if a policyowner has a $500,000 policy and accesses $100,000 of the funds using the accelerated death benefit provision, their beneficiaries would receive a payout of $400,000.
