Where Can You Get Travel Insurance
If you want to protect yourself from vacation mishaps but cant afford to pay an arm and a leg, you may want to consider applying for a credit card that offers travel insurance.
Many of the best travel cards offer various forms of travel insurance for no additional cost. But when youre shopping for the best travel card, keep in mind you may be charged an annual fee.
Travel booking websites like Expedia may also offer travel insurance for a modest fee when you purchase airfare, book a hotel or rent a car. You can also find companies that specialize in travel insurance, but be prepared to pay for the peace of mind.
Most of the time, its not worth paying more money for travel insurance, Keyes said. Im a cheapskate. I dont like spending money on things I dont need to, so I always rely on my credit card as my fail-safe.
Does My Credit Card Have Travel Insurance
Some credit cards do provide some travel insurance benefits. To find out whether your credit card provides any trip protection, contact the card company directly or check your credit card policy documents. Details regarding any potential refunds in the event of a canceled trip or other benefits, like baggage protection, should be stated in the benefits guide.

Travel insurance helps you get your money back when things go wrong with your trip. And it remains a debate: Do you really need it, and is it worth it?
Personally, Ive often skipped travel insurance, preferring to put the extra money toward my trip. Yet as I pulled into the airport after a winter ski trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in my SUV rental, a snowplow kicked up a rock and a crack extended across the windshield. And just like that, I got in the dreaded rental car accident.
Thankfully, I had rented my car with my Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card, which covered rental car windshield reimbursement. Note that I had also specifically opted out of the car rental’s insurance coverage offered at the counter, which is a requirement in order to allow my credit card coverage to kick in. Terms apply.
A number of credit cards provide various types of travel insurance when you use your card to pay for flights, rental cars and other travel expenses. So do you need additional travel insurance? Maybe not.

What Is Section 75
This applies to certain transactions made by credit card.; The goods or service you bought must have cost over £100 and not more than £30,000.; “Section 75” is an important consumer protection right that means your credit provider has a legal responsibility if things go wrong with something you purchase using credit. Section 75 rights are only available where the provider has misrepresented something to you or breached their contract with you. However, as well as the amount you actually spent on the card , you can also recover your full losses, sometimes including consequential expenses.; Claims will be subject to usual legal limitation rules applying to breach of contract or misrepresentation claims.
There can be complex legal and factual issues arising and each case will depend upon its own facts.
Key Takeaways: Stay Calm & Contact Your Travel Provider
If youre worried about COVID-19s impact on your travel plans, or need to reschedule an upcoming trip, its actually time to start asking your travel provider some questions.
Reach out to your airline, hotel, or cruise operator. Ask to take advantage of provisions theyve already put in place. Customer service lines are being flooded with calls so if you’re not traveling in the immediate future, we recommend seeing what you can do online first, or waiting until a later date to call. In many cases, youll be able to make travel reservation changes online. To learn more about how travel providers are helping consumers during the pandemic, read “Can I Get a Refund for Travel Canceled or Delayed Due to the Coronavirus?“;
If you paid for your trip with a credit card that offers trip interruption or cancellation insurance, refer to your benefits guide or better yet, call your credit card issuer for more information about your coverage as it pertains to your individual situation. If you really want to make travel plans and be covered for at least some of the losses if you have to change them, consider CFAR travel insurance.
Finally, stay calm. When it comes to future trips, its still smart to use credit cards to book travel going forward. While their travel insurance benefits arent necessarily helpful in this type of situation, future travel disruptions may be covered and credit card benefits are always subject to change.;

What Does Your Travel Insurance Cover
First, lets look at the different types of coverage that your credit card may offer to help protect your trip, from your bags to your rental car to your health.
Lost luggage: Up to $3,000 per passenger.
Travel accident insurance: Up to $250,000.
Rental car insurance: Covers damage or theft with restrictions.
What If I Have Booked Separate Accommodation And Paid For This On My Card And My Flight Is Cancelled
You will generally be entitled to a full refund from your airline for the cancelled flight, but if you didn’t book the flight on the card, then you would not be able to claim under Section 75 or chargeback for the amount of the flight.
If the hotel is still open for business and it is the cancelled flight that has stopped you travelling, the hotel will not have broken their contract with you if they are still able to honour your original booking and so there is no Section 75 or chargeback claim for the accommodation costs.; However, if the hotel’s terms allowed you to cancel and get some of your money back, you might have a claim if they stopped you doing that and refused you a refund.
If you paid for the flight on your card and the flight is cancelled and you have the right to claim for breach of contract you may be able to claim hotel costs as consequential losses so long as these were reasonably anticipated losses you might suffer and;recovery has not been excluded by the terms of any contract.

The Best Credit Cards For Travel Insurance
Canadians are lucky to have publicly funded health care, but did you know if you travel outside of Canada that your provincial health plan doesnt follow you? The cost of medical attention can be quite high in some countries. Think hundreds of dollars for a quick trip to the doctor, or thousands if you need to visit the emergency room. Fortunately, as long as you have travel insurance, you wont have to pay anything out of pocket.
Usually when people speak about travel insurance theyre referring to travel medical, which covers you in situations where medical care is required abroad. However, other types of travel insurance you may need include travel accident, trip cancellation and interruption, delayed baggage, and lost baggage. It may seem excessive to have that much insurance when travelling, but trust us, youll be glad you have it if you ever need it.
The good news is that many premium credit cards offer a comprehensive travel insurance package as a standard benefit. To qualify for coverage, your account needs to be in good standing and a portion or the entire cost of the transportation ticket must be paid for using the credit card.
Heres a breakdown of the types of credit card travel insurance we cover in this post.
What Travel Protections Are Provided By Credit Cards
Some cards dont provide any special travel protections, while others offer ample travel protections. Currently, my favorite consumer cards that offer travel protections are the Chase Sapphire Reserve;, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express .
Heres a quick overview of the travel protections provided by each of these cards:
The information for the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

When Are Credit Card Travel Protections Enough
Suppose you dont fall into any of the categories above and use a such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve when making travel purchases. In that case, you may determine that credit card protections are enough for some of your trips. However, I only recommend relying on credit card protections if you also have medical insurance that provides adequate coverage at your destination.
Below is a collection of reasons why you may be able to rely on credit card protections instead of purchasing independent travel insurance. Note that this is not an exhaustive list, and you dont need all of them to apply in order to forgo travel insurance. However, if some of these reasons apply to your trip, you may want to rely on credit card protections:
- You have personal health insurance that will cover you on your trip, even if treatment is out of network .
- You have a premium travel rewards credit card that provides travel protections, and you use this card to book your travels.
- You have a premium credit card that provides medical evacuation protection on your trip.
- You book refundable travel, including award flights and/or nights that can be canceled free of charge.
Is Credit Card Travel Insurance Worth It
Yes. Credit card travel insurance can offer quite a broad range of coverages that can come handy in unthinkable situations. When an emergency happens, you can contact your card company or the benefits administrator on your card to receive immediate assistance. However, if you have any chronic medical conditions or belong to a vulnerable group, we recommend purchasing additional travel insurance.

Not Sure Which Card To Choose Let Us Help You
On a side note thats unrelated to travel insurance but may sway you to choose this card over the others on this list: The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite offers superior airport lounge access benefits with a complimentary membership and six free passes to Priority Pass lounges.
Main Benefit Of Both Paid Policies
Theres no question that a paid policy greatly increases the amount of medical reimbursement available to you in case of injury or illness. With credit card insurance limits of $2,500 for medical treatment, a traveler could quickly exceed the maximum coverage. Paid policies offer ten times the amount of coverageor moreproviding ultimate protection.
The emergency transportation far exceeds that of the Sapphire Reserve and improves upon the Platinum cards coverage, too. Instead of paying for your transportation to the nearest adequate hospital, it will pay to repatriate you all the way to your home country if you prefer. That flexibility can be valuable for peace of mind.
Lastly, paid policies offer non-tangible benefits as well. Most companies include extra resources for policyholders to help you plan or research safety issues for your destination before traveling. There are also assistance hotlines you can contact while traveling to get recommendations on doctors or medical facilities abroad.

Loss Of Checked Luggage Insurance
If your checked luggage is stolen or lost by the carrier , you may be eligible up to a certain amount of coverage for the replacement value of the items you lose. However, there are many restrictions regarding what is excluded such as skis, tennis rackets, cameras, hearing aids, glasses, travelers check and so on. However, if your luggage is delayed, even if for the complete duration of your trip and you end up buying an entire set of new clothes, the credit card company will not pay for them.
Do I Need Additional Travel Insurance
Even with the coverage listed above, some credit cards offering travel insurance benefits may not provide enough insurance for your needs. For example, if you have paid $10,000 for a vacation using your card and trip cancellation is not offered, you may want to purchase additional coverage. Likewise, if you book a very expensive trip but your card only covers $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage, you may want to consider additional coverage.
American Express offers full travel insurance options through AmEx Assurance. This specific benefit is available to all travelers and does not require an American Express card. You can pick and choose the coverage you want, and a quote will be processed based on your age, trip expense and days traveling.
For example, here’s what we found when requesting insurance for a two-day trip that costs $1,000. You can decide what coverage you’d like and see the full cost of your options:
The quote we received covered 100% reimbursement for cancellation, then offered different levels for other types of coverage.
Medical protection was available for $25,000 to $100,000.
Travel accident protection was available for $250,000 to $1,500,000.
Baggage protection was available for up to $500 to $2,500.
Trip delay coverage was offered for $150 to $1,000 per day, depending on selecting basic, silver, gold or premium options.
When renting a car, be sure to check the specific requirements of your credit card, which may vary by location and type of vehicle.
