Meet The Terms Of Your Policy

IMG Travel Insurance- Need to Cover Your Clients Traveling Abroad?

It is your responsibility to know and understand the terms of your insurance policy. Read the fine print carefully and ask for help, if you need it.

The information you provide must be accurate and complete. If you have any questions, contact the insurance company. Ask them to clarify the issue in writing.

Get approval from your insurer before you undergo medical treatment. Travel health insurance rarely covers routine health checkups, non-emergency care and cosmetic surgery. It may not cover mental health disorders, drug- or alcohol-related incidents, or extreme sports such as bungee jumping and rock climbing.

Get a detailed report and invoice from your doctor or hospital before leaving the country where you received medical treatment. Trying to get the proper paperwork from thousands of kilometres away can be frustrating. Always submit the original receipts for medical services or prescriptions you received abroad. Keep a copy of the documents for your files.

Carry your insurance information with you while you are travelling. Leave a copy of the information with a friend or relative at home.

How You Can Get Atol Protection

When you make a package holiday booking that includes a flight, make sure the travel firm has a licence. Firms have to display their ATOL number on websites and in brochures.

When you book, the ATOL holder or their agent must provide an ATOL Certificate confirming you are ATOL protected immediately when you pay any money . This should include the name of the licensed firm youve booked with, their ATOL number and details of whats protected. Take these documents with you when you travel.

You will not be protected by ATOL if you:

  • are not buying a package holiday from an ATOL holder or its appointed travel agent
  • buy a Linked Travel Arrangement . This is where a business facilitates the sale of two or more travel services but does so in a way that it is not classed as a package. If a travel business sells an LTA, it must inform you that this is the case and what protection you may have
  • buy your flight and accommodation separately from different suppliers, such as an airline and a hotel company

You can check whether a business holds an ATOL on the CAA website.

Be Prepared To Pay Upfront

Pay particular attention to the last question above, âwill I have to pay upfront?â Even if your health insurance policy covers care internationally, it may do so only by issuing a reimbursement.

This is because your U.S. insurance company may not have a direct billing and payment relationship with foreign healthcare providers. If they donât, the foreign health care provider will require full payment before treatment. Then, you may be able to apply for reimbursement from your U.S. provider after receiving care.

Health And Medical Emergencies

This is possibly the most important part of any travel insurance policy. If you do not take out adequate insurance, you will have to pay the costs of any emergency yourself.

A medical emergency in another country can be very expensive, for example:

  • £100,000: a stomach bug or infection treated in a hospital in the USA with return flights

  • £100,000: a stroke in south-east Asia, with emergency treatment and medical repatriation to the UK

  • £25,000: a moped accident in Greece, with surgery and repatriation to the UK

  • £15,000: a fall in Spain, resulting in a broken hip, hospital treatment and flights

Your travel insurance should cover:

  • emergency treatment and hospital bills, which can be expensive. Check whether your policy covers treatment in public or private hospitals.

  • emergency transport, such as ambulance fees or emergency repatriation on medical grounds

  • getting home after treatment if you cannot use your original ticket

  • reasonable costs for a family member or friend to stay with you or travel out to accompany you home if required

  • temporary emergency dental treatment for the relief of immediate pain

  • 24-hour assistance helplines to offer support and advice about appropriate treatment

  • repatriation costs in the event of death abroad

Before you travel, make sure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer and answer questions about your medical history in full. See Policy exclusions.

Travel Insurance Coverage: 18 Things Your Policy Won

Coverage needs depend on personal preference and other factors, including your age, health and nature of your trip. In general, try to find medical coverage for $100,000 or more, which should cover most medical emergencies and hospitalizations. For additional peace of mind, look for coverage of $500,000.

How To Choose Travel Medical Insurance

The medical risks you face when traveling outside the U.S. are hard to quantify. Basically, the chances of facing a major medical problem are small very small, for medevac but the financial consequences of a serious event are potentially quite large.

Fortunately, travel health insurance prices are not bad. As with all travel insurance, my suggestion is that you check with one or two of the online travel insurance agencies, enter your personal details, trip details, and the coverages you want, and select the least expensive policy that meets your needs. Some of the major agencies include InsureMyTrip.com, Squaremouth, and QuoteWright.

Q: Do Most Health Insurance Policies Cover Routine Doctor Or Hospital Visits When A Policyholder Is Traveling Outside The Us

A: Actually, most health plans don’t cover that kind of medical care. Or at least they don’t cover all of it. Most of the plans that cover it at all consider it an out-of-network service. This means you have to pay for more of the bill than you would if you received the care in the U.S.

To find out what kinds of medical care your plan covers or doesn’t cover while traveling, contact your insurance provider.

How To Shop For Covid

While reading the fine print on your travel insurance documents doesnt sound like fun, it is necessary if you want to make sure to get the right coverage for your trip. Insuring your trip during a pandemic can be complicated, and it is important to think ahead. Be sure to buy travel insurance from an actual travel insurance company not as a simple add-on when you book your airfare, hotel or cruise. Many insurance companies offering travel policies have specific rules about accessing COVID-19 coverage. You can find out exactly which potential expenses are covered by reading the policys exclusion and coverages or by clicking on the COVID-19 FAQs link next to each plan on TravelInsurance.com.

Pay Attention to Exclusions

Some travel insurance policies have a specific section of exclusions related to COVID-19. While these policies may cost a lot less than policies with more robust coverage, they wont help you if you become sick due to COVID-19 on your trip.

Make sure you buy a policy that includes a wide array of pandemic-related travel losses. All travel insurance policies specifically exclude claims made based on fear of travel which could mean that worries about COVID-19 will not qualify you for coverage if you cancel your trip. For cancelling due to worries or fear of travel, you will want to purchase a plan with an optional Cancel For Any Reason upgrade..

What Precautions Should You Take While You Travel

Before you go, learn about the places you plan to visit. For example, find out if the water is safe to drink or if you need to worry about malaria.

Basic safety can prevent some problems:

  • Developing countries may not have safe tap water. When visiting these places, drink only beverages made with boiled water, such as tea and coffee. Canned or bottled carbonated drinks are usually a safe choice. Don’t use ice if you don’t know what kind of water was used to make it.
  • Do not eat raw vegetables, raw fruits, or raw or undercooked meat and seafood.
  • In areas where mosquito-borne illnesses are found, use DEET insect repellent. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, especially from dusk to dawn. Use mosquito netting to protect yourself from bites while you sleep.
  • Motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of injury among travelers. If you drive, be sure to learn the custom and rules. If you use hired drivers , don’t be afraid to ask your driver to slow down or to drive more carefully. Use seat belts if possible.

What Is The Coronavirus

Before we talk about travel insurance coverage for new Coronavirus, I think its first important to give some information about the virus and its associated illness. This way, we can stay calm and have a better idea of what exactly it is that we are dealing with.

COVID-19, more popularly known as the Coronavirus, is a type of virus that is much more common in animals than in people . So, this isnt the first time that a mutation like this has occurred. In 2002 and 2012, for example, a virus from this same family affected humans. That said, the worldwide impact of the COVID-19 looks to be far more severe than anything related weve encountered in the past.

The first cases were reported at the end of last year in Wuhan, China. Since then, the illness has expanded rapidly not just across China, but the world as a whole.

At the moment, we dont know exactly how the virus is passed between people, but its most likely that its transmitted via water droplets that are quite easily passed from one person to another.

Because of this, the World Health Organization has created some measures we can follow to prevent the spread:

It may seem like a lot of precautions to follow, but these are all important to avoid transmission and slow down the spread of the illness.especially because, at the moment, there is no vaccine for the virus.

What To Know Before You Buy Travel Insurance

Check your primary health-insurance policy first. Most domestic policies offer some coverage for international emergencies, for things like broken bones, appendicitis, and illnesses and accidents that require immediate medical attention. But it may not be enough to cover your entire bill or to get you home. If you were to go on a trip and contract COVID-19 or be quarantined, some domestic policies would consider that a medical emergency and cover a percentage of the cost of your care and the logistical expenses of being quarantined. But policies vary, and its imperative to talk to an agent at your insurance company to see whats covered before traveling. Depending on the state in which you reside, Blue Cross Blue Shield offers international protection through GeoBlue, a supplemental policy that provides up to $1 million in medical and up to $500,000 in evacuation costs for international travel. To be insured with GeoBlue, you dont have to have domestic Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage, but you do have to provide proof that you have a primary health-insurance policy.

Multitrip Vs Single Trip

Say you plan to go country-hopping in Europe for two weeks. Thats still considered a single trip even though youll be visiting different countries. But if youre someone who has several trips abroad planned out over the course of a few months, and youll be returning back home in between, it might be easier and more cost-effective to purchase a multitrip policy that covers you for a set period of time over multiple trips.

Will Your Health Insurance Cover You Abroad

UAE: Does my international travel insurance cover COVID

By Julie Loffredi, Next Avenue Contributor

One in three Americans are unclear whether their domestic health insurance will cover any doctor or hospital visits while traveling outside the U.S., according to a new study by InsureMyTrip. So how can you know for sure if your insurance will cover you abroad?

Before your next trip, do some research. If you discover limitations with your health plan, take the necessary steps in advance to get the coverage you think best meets your needs.

The first step is to contact your health insurance company to verify whether your emergency medical coverage extends outside the U.S. Contact the customer service department and ask these kinds of questions:

  • If I get sick or injured abroad, will my policy cover me?
  • Does my insurance cover pre-existing conditions abroad?
  • Will I have to pay health expenses abroad out-of-pocket and then file a claim for reimbursement?

In most cases, you’ll get some coverage for care needed to treat an emergency, but you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket and then submit for reimbursement after you return home, says Lisa Zamosky, author of Healthcare, Insurance, and You: The Savvy Consumers Guide.

Also on Forbes:

Generally speaking, insurers define a medical emergency as one in which a reasonable layperson believes their health would be in real jeopardy without immediate medical attention think heart attack or a serious accident, Zamosky says.

Are Travel Insurance And Health Insurance The Same

Travel insurance and health insurance are not the same. Travel insurance can include health insurance, providing coverage for both the cost of the trip and medical emergencies. However, travelers may also choose stand-alone health insurance, which is intended to cover medical expenses that occur during travel and less focused on trip cancellation losses.

Primary Vs Secondary Coverage

Travel medical insurance plans will refer to medical coverage as primary or secondary. Primary means that you can submit a claim to your travel medical insurance company before submitting to any other insurer. When the policy is secondary, you will need to submit your claim to your primary insurance provider before you can submit a claim to the travel insurance provider.

For example, say you break your leg on vacation and have to go to the emergency room right away. If your travel health insurance is primary, you can pay your medical bill with your credit card and then submit a claim directly to the travel insurer.

However, if your travel medical coverage is secondary, you will first have to submit this claim to your U.S.-based medical insurer even though they may deny the claim . You may even be required to include the refusal notice from your primary insurance along with your claim to your secondary travel health insurer.

Learn The Difference Between Travel Insurance And Travel Memberships

Travel insurance is an umbrella termthat generally covers a carefully calibrated portion of medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, flight accidents , evacuation due to natural disasters, and other losses incurred while traveling. The list of companies offering these policies is long: AIG Travel, Allianz Travel Insurance, IMG, Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance, and others. Most of these offer comprehensive packages that cover all of the above, as well as à la carte coverage options for medical reasons, trip cancellation, and other things. The price of and protection provided by each policy varies and can be based on the age of the traveler, the state in which the traveler lives, the cost and duration of the trip, the destination country, and when the traveler buys the policy in relation to purchasing the trip.

COVID-19 has opened a massive can of worms, because it became whats called in insurance parlance a known risk to travelers as of roughly January 21. For those who purchased a policy after January 21, cancellations due to the virus may not be covered. AIG Travel still encourages travelers to file a claim because some policies may provide coverage depending on the exact reason for cancellation. And as the virus spreads, some companies, like Allianz, are altering their policies to include coverage of COVID-related medical and cancellation claims.

Q: If I Go To Puerto Rico On Vacation And Have To See A Doctor Will My Health Insurance Cover It

A: It should, but it depends on your policy. If you have a Medicare plan, for example, it’ll cover health care in Puerto Rico, as it’s part of the U.S. Remember, Medicare won’t cover most medical services sought in foreign countries. American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Virgin Islands also are part of the U.S.

As for employer-sponsored and other private health plans, most cover doctor visits while you’re in Puerto Rico. The only way to be sure is to talk with your company’s human resources department or to call your insurance provider.
