What Are The First Signs Of Heartworm Infection In Dogs

According to veterinarian and author Dr. Margit Muller, many dogs dont actually show any symptoms for the first few months of heartworm infection, though active dogs are most likely to suffer from symptoms the soonest. Dogs that do begin to exhibit signs may simply have a mild persistent cough, or show exercise intolerance and want to return home early from a long run or hike.

With severe heartworm disease, dogs may show the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the belly due to fluid accumulation
  • Syncope where a dog will pass out

In addition, your veterinarian may be able to feel liver enlargement, or hear abnormal lung sounds and a heart murmur.

While you should consult your veterinarian if your pet has any of these symptoms if you notice your dog has trouble breathing, dark urine, and/or pale gums seek medical attention for them immediately. They may have developed caval syndrome, a potentially deadly cardiovascular issue that requires immediate surgery for your fur babys survival.

Early Detection Is Key

It can help improve the odds for successful treatment of an infected dog if the disease is caught early. As the disease progresses, more adult heartworms develop and increase the risk of treatment.

Heartworm testing is usually performed during your dogs annual exam. It consists of a blood test that will either check for antigens left behind in the bloodstream by female heartworms or look for the presence of microfilariae. Your veterinarian will determine the correct test for your dog depending on local risk factors.

The waiting period will be removed if you had no gap in cover between switching from your old provider to us. If you need to claim in the first two weeks well ask that you show us proof of you previous policy.

How Much Will Pet Insurance Cost Each Month

Latest News

Per the NAPHIA, the average monthly premium for a dog in 2017 in the U.S. with accident and illness insurance was $44.67, and $15.84 for an accident-only plan.

Average monthly premiums for cats in 2017 were a bit lower: $27.93 for accident and illness plans, and $12.72 for accident-only coverage.

And like health insurance for humans, you have deductibles, monthly premiums, and co-payments.

Some plans have yearly deductibles with annual limits, and will cover treatments up to a certain amount. Youll need to pay your yearly deductible before your insurance sets in.

Other plans a schedule of benefits, which have a cap per treatment or procedure within a given time period, so youll need to read the fine print.

And the lower your monthly premium, the higher your deductible and co-pays tend to be.

So lets say you take your kitten in for ringworm treatment, and the bill was $100. If youve paid your deductible for the year, and your reimbursement level is 80 percent, youll get $80 back from the insurance company.

Heres another tricky part: Exam and consultation fees for a certain condition may not be covered, even if its an illness or injury. Once again, youll need to read the fine print.

What Happens During An Emergency Cesarean

An emergency C-section is a C-section that you doctor decides to do after youve gone into labour and because a complication could threaten the life of you or your baby. In NSW, 12% of all births were done by emergency C-section in 2016.

While these are fairly common, you shouldnt fret because they are still considered safe. The word emergency refers more to what would happen if you didnt have the C-section.

With an emergency C-section, there may not be enough time to numb the lower part of the body, so they may just have to knock you out completely with a general anaesthetic.

The surgery will then go on as normal, but youll need a little longer to recover.

All of this is not quite the same as a C-section that your doctor decides to do because of a prolonged labour. In the second case, its still a last-minute decision but theres no rush to do it and you can avoid having to be knocked out completely.

How Do I Know If My Pet Has Heartworm Disease

In its early stages, heartworm often has no symptoms, but antigens produced by the female parasite can be detected by your veterinarian using a simple blood test. The AHS recommends annual testing of pets to prevent spread and maturation of the parasite. In more severe cases, an infected animal may display a soft dry cough, lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, trouble breathing, or a bulging chest. A positive blood test result for heartworm can be confirmed by microscopic examination of a blood sample, by EKG, or by x-ray. Its important to note that while cats are more resistant to heartworm than are dogs, they can and do get the disease, so remember to have them checked as well.

What Are The Important Features Of Pet Insurance

When shopping for pet insurance, you will want to look at several key features. You will want to consider the cost of the monthly premium, the rate and types of deductibles, the reimbursement rate, and any annual or lifetime limits.

A premium is a set amount you will pay each month to your insurance provider regardless of whether or not your pet needs veterinary care. Premium rates vary significantly between policies, so you will want to research the plan to find out the exact rates.

The deductible is the amount you are responsible for paying out of pocket before you are reimbursed any money. Deductibles usually reset annually, but some pet insurance deductibles are based on the type of injury or illness. If your pet has the same injury more than one time, you will only pay the deductible on that injury once.

The reimbursement rate is what the insurance company will pay you for medical care after you have met your deductible.

There are a variety of limits on policies. Some pet insurance policies have limits on the amount you can be reimbursed based on the illness or injury and others have annual or lifetime limits.

Why Pet Insurance Might Not Cover What You Think It Does

When Kate Castles Labrador Retriever Dexter was 8 weeks old, she and her partner signed up for a pet insurance policy.

Unfortunately, at 11 weeks, their pup fell ill and the couple ended up spending over $3,000 in medical bills. It turned out that Dexter suffered from a congenital disorder with his kidneys, and wasnt going to make it.

Castle was shocked to discover that none of the medical costs would be covered, other than the $130 for the cremationwhich took a mountain of paperwork and well over a month to get reimbursement for.

After recovering from the grief of losing their first dog, they decided to welcome another dog into their family.

After their experiences they would be far more attentive to the fine print of their pet insurance policy.

This time around I decided to do a ton of research and read in depth what each company actually covered, says Castle, a marketing partner at Flybridge Capital who lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.

While Castle learned the hard way about pet insurance coverage, you dont have to. Pinpointing exactly what pet insurance plans cover can feel like a Herculean task for a litany of reasons.

Well go over the main things to check when comparing policies, and factors to look out for.

Addressing The Cost Of Heartworm In Dogs

If you are a dog owner, you may have heard of heartworms in dogs. However, like many dog owners, you might not be completely aware of the various threats and risks that heartworms can pose to your furry companion.

Heartworm is a serious and potentially lethal parasite that mainly infects dogs and cats. The good news is that it is preventable and treatable if your pet does contract heartworms. Heartworm, known as Dirofilaria immitis, is a parasite that takes up residence in a dogs body. It mainly affects his lungs, heart, and associated blood vessels.

Although outdoor playtime for your pet definitely offers many benefits, it can also increase his risk of exposure to heartworm. The risk is higher outdoors as heartworm often spreads through bites from infected mosquitoes. And as there is no way to know if a mosquito is infected, prevention is essential.

But this doesnt imply that your dog is completely safe indoors. Also, all dogs, regardless of sex and age, are vulnerable to heartworm infection.
