Does Travel Insurance Cover Expired Passport

Don't Miss

Immunizations & Health Certificates

Why you should Not Discard an Expired Passport

The Covid test requirement was eliminated in November of 2020 and the only requirement is filling out a health survey about fevers, sore throat etc.; Visitors are required to have insurance covering medical and quarantine costs in case they contract Covid while visiting.

For 99% of visitors there are no health certificates or immunizations required to enter Costa Rica

The only vaccination requirement is for citizens of or travelers coming from a country in South America or Africa where yellow fever is present.; If you have stayed in one of the countries where it is endemic you will need

  • a certificate of immunization dated at least a week before your arrival in Costa Rica
  • passport stamp showing you have spent at least one week in a country with no yellow fever
  • a normal body temperature

NOTE: Tourist visas are issued when you arrive and are now valid for the number of days you are covered by travel insurance.; The previous automatic 90 days permission to enter has been suspended and if your QR code shows one week of Covid travel insurance your visa will be for 7 days!; It is impossible to extend this visa from inside Costa Rica so plan ahead if there is any chance youll want to stay longer.

Keeping Your Passport Safe On Holiday

  • Be extra vigilant when carrying your passport in busy locations, pickpockets tend to target tourists as they are often distracted by the sights.
  • Make a note of your passport number and expiry date as you may need to quote these when booking your holiday or applying for a visa.
  • Keep your passport in a waterproof cover this will help protect your passport against damage.
  • Store yours and other family members passports in the same place so when it comes to travelling they will be easy to locate.
  • What Is A Reasonably Foreseeable Event

You don’t need a crystal ball to predict a foreseeable event. A foreseeable event is an outcome that a reasonable person in similar circumstances would expect to occur. For instance, if your business partner has been indicted for fraud and you schedule a vacation during his trial, it’s foreseeable that you’ll be subpoenaed and have to cancel your trip.

Or, suppose your mother has been in and out of the hospital for months when you purchase travel insurance for an upcoming business trip. Because of her prognosis, it’s foreseeable that you may have to cancel your trip because her illness worsens. In short, if you’re buying travel insurance with a specific scenario in mind “I’ll probably have to cancel this trip because of X” then it’s likely to be a foreseeable event. You’re better off rescheduling the trip.

How You Can Get Atol Protection

When you make a package holiday booking that includes a flight, make sure the travel firm has a licence. Firms have to display their ATOL number on websites and in brochures.

When you book, the ATOL holder or their agent must provide an ATOL Certificate confirming you are ATOL protected immediately when you pay any money . This should include the name of the licensed firm youve booked with, their ATOL number and details of whats protected. Take these documents with you when you travel.

You will not be protected by ATOL if you:

    • are not buying a package holiday from an ATOL holder or its appointed travel agent
    • buy a Linked Travel Arrangement . This is where a business facilitates the sale of two or more travel services but does so in a way that it is not classed as a package. If a travel business sells an LTA, it must inform you that this is the case and what protection you may have
    • buy your flight and accommodation separately from different suppliers, such as an airline and a hotel company

You can check whether a business holds an ATOL on the CAA website.

Are There Any Changes To British Passports Since Brexit

    Expired Passport

Yes, since the Brexit transition, there are a few changes to British passports and travelling to Europe that you should know about.

The most obvious change is the colour of your new passport. New UK passports are now blue, not burgundy, and no longer display the European Union wording on the cover.

If you still have a burgundy EU passport, you can continue to use it up until its time to renew.

There are also changes to rules for travelling to Europe:

    • For travel to the European Union , European Economic Area or Switzerland, youll need at least six months left on your passport, and your passport needs to be less than 10 years old. If youre travelling to Ireland, you can continue to use your passport up until the expiry date.
    • If youre driving in Europe, youll need a green card from your car insurance provider. This acts as proof that youre covered when driving abroad. You might also need an international driving permit to drive in some EU countries and Norway.
    • The UK European Health Insurance Card is now being replaced by a UK Global Health Insurance Card . It works in pretty much the same way and lets you get state healthcare in EU countries at the same cost as residents of those countries sometimes for free. You can still use your existing EHIC up until its expiry date. You can apply for a new GHIC card on the NHS website.

How To Renew A Uk Passport Online

The fastest and easiest way to renew your UK passport is online via the GOV.UK website. The process only takes about 20 minutes. Even better, you dont need to worry about finding a photo booth at the local shopping centre. Simply upload a digital photo, following HM Passport Offices rules for digital photos.

    If youre not that keen on taking an appropriate smartphone image, you can still use a specialist photo shop or a photo booth. Some will give you a code which you can use to add the photo to your online application digitally. ;

What youll need to renew your UK passport online:

    • A digital photo
    • A credit or debit card
    • Your passport

Once youve completed the application, youll need to send your old passport to HM Passport Office.

If you prefer, you can make an online application using the Post Offices Check and Send service. Theyll fill out the form for you and take a digital photo. Theyll also send your old passport to HM Passport Office via special delivery. The service costs £16 on top of your passport renewal fee.

    Financial Protection For Package Holidays

You need to know that your package holiday is protected against the travel organisers insolvency. This includes protection for services not performed and prompt repatriation if the travel organiser goes bankrupt whilst you are on holiday.

If you have booked a package holiday from a UK established business or a business established outside of the European Economic Area , which is a combination of 2 or more travel services , you will be protected by the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. The Regulations require businesses selling package holidays to have insolvency protection through the ATOL scheme for holidays including flights. For holidays that do not include flights, protection is provided through three options – Bonding or Insurance or Trust account.

If you bought your package holiday from a travel business established in an EEA country other than the UK, you protection will be provided under the arrangements made by that country.

You should make sure that you are provided with clear information, including on the level of insolvency protection, before you buy. Your package travel organiser will be able to provide that information to you.

You can check Citizens Advice guidance on cancelling a package holiday and claiming compensation for a holiday.

Brexit: How This Will Affect British Passports In The Eu

What Does Travel Insurance NOT Cover? (Lost baggage, Skydiving, Medical Travel)

If you’re a British passport holder then you need to be aware of the new status and scope of existing EU passports after the Brexit deadline. Along with securing the right travel insurance for your trip you’ll need to know the new guidelines for your passport, either if you’re a UK business traveller or a holiday maker travelling around the globe! At Holiday Extras we’d like to lay these changes out as simply as possible for you!

Following both the UK and the EU signing the Withdrawal Agreement on 31st January 2020, we are now in a transition period lasting until at least 31st December 2020. During 2020 everything will remain the same and you can continue to travel without any changes. Valid passports can still be used and you do not need to have six months left on your passport to travel to the EU. Your passport does however need to be valid for the whole of your trip!

The UK Government website states that after 1st January 2021, you’ll need to have at least 6 months left on an adult or child passport to travel to most countries in Europe . If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the 6 months needed. If you do not have enough time left on your passport then you’ll need to renew it before travelling to most European countries.

These countries include those listed below:

    • Andorra
    • Vatican City

Meet The Terms Of Your Policy

It is your responsibility to know and understand the terms of your insurance policy. Read the fine print carefully and ask for help, if you need it.

The information you provide must be accurate and complete. If you have any questions, contact the insurance company. Ask them to clarify the issue in writing.

Get approval from your insurer before you undergo medical treatment. Travel health insurance rarely covers routine health checkups, non-emergency care and cosmetic surgery. It may not cover mental health disorders, drug- or alcohol-related incidents, or extreme sports such as bungee jumping and rock climbing.

Get a detailed report and invoice from your doctor or hospital before leaving the country where you received medical treatment. Trying to get the proper paperwork from thousands of kilometres away can be frustrating. Always submit the original receipts for medical services or prescriptions you received abroad. Keep a copy of the documents for your files.

Carry your insurance information with you while you are travelling. Leave a copy of the information with a friend or relative at home.

    Choosing The Right Insurer

The cheapest policy may not offer best value for money, so it’s important to check what the policy includes as well as how much it costs.

You can check what different policies offer and how much they cost by using an online comparison website. However, comparison websites usually only offer general cover. If you have particular needs, it may be better to find an insurer that offers specialist cover.

    Why Take Out Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can protect you against the following things going wrong:

    • cancelling or cutting short your trip for reasons beyond your control
    • missed transport or delayed departure for reasons beyond your control
    • medical and other emergencies
    • lost, stolen or damaged items, including baggage, passports and money
    • accidental damage or injury caused by you.

If you don’t have travel insurance you will have to pay out of your own pocket to deal with a problem while you’re away. Or you may lose money if you have to cancel a trip and can’t get your money back. This could cost you thousands of pounds.

Are There Any Exclusions In The Small Print Of Travel Insurance

When Should You Renew Your Passport?

Generally, travel insurance covers a wide range of risks, including medical treatment costs, loss of possessions, delay and curtailment. However, beware of the fine print as insurers will expect you to take reasonable care – so for example, if you leave possessions unattended, then they may not be covered if they are lost or stolen.

Also, beware of drinking heavily holiday. If you are drunk – which is defined as anything over the UK legal limit – your claim will not be covered if, say, you were robbed or hurt.

How Can I Make A Complaint About My Travel Insurance Claim

Finally, if you have exhausted your insurance company’s complaints process and still think you have been treated unfairly, you could take your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service .

It will consider claims on a case-by-case basis because policies are all worded differently. The FOS will look at issues including the wordings of individual policies, and a person’s circumstances when they took out the policy.

Is There Such A Thing As An Emergency Passport

No. Although the term is commonly used to refer to an ETD, theres no such thing as an emergency passport.

An ETD is not a substitute for an actual passport – its only valid to get you to a specified destination. UK border staff usually keep your ETD so it cant be used again.

If you lose your passport while youre in the UK, you can apply for a passport urgently, as long as you have a valid reason why you need to get your passport faster than normal.

You cant apply for a passport urgently if youre outside the UK.

The UK government says: On the day you travel, youll need your passport to both have at least six months left be less than 10 years old .”

The passport must be less than nine years and six months old.

Unforeseen Severe Weather: What Does Travel Insurance Cover

If a hurricane or a winter storm ruins your vacation, travel insurance can be your best friend. Let’s say a severe storm slams into the Bahamas and damages the resort where you’re staying, rendering it uninhabitable. Travel insurance can reimburse you for your prepaid trip costs plus the extra cost of flying back home early. If your trip is delayed because the storm canceled your flight, travel insurance can reimburse you for the cost of a hotel room or meals while you wait.

However, timing is everything. Once a storm is named by the National Hurricane Center or another forecasting entity, it becomes a foreseeable event with known potential to affect your travel. This means that if you buy travel insurance after a storm has been named, you won’t be covered for losses related to that storm. You would, however, be covered for other situations for instance, if you had to interrupt your trip because of a covered illness.
