Air Canadas new COVID-19 insurance by Manulife covers round-trip international flights, but it doesnt apply when you book Air Canada Vacations packages. Thats because Air Canada Vacations are covered under a separate COVID-19 insurance policy issued by Allianz, which was announced a few weeks back.

Allianzs policy automatically applies to any Air Canada Vacations packages for travel until April 30, 2021, to a list of select destinations in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It excludes travel to the USA, and also does not apply to residents of Saskatchewan.

The Air Canada Vacations COVID-19 insurance policy is slightly weaker than the general Air Canada COVID-19 insurance policy outlined above. Emergency medical coverage due to COVID-19 is only covered up to $100,000 , and also excludes coverage for a change in the Government of Canadas Travel Advisory.

When COVID-19 caused thousands of flights and bookings to cancel, many travellers realised they had missed the epidemic/pandemic exclusion and found themselves facing large costs to get home, change bookings or at the mercy of force majeure cancellation policies that had high cancellation fees.

A spokesperson from Cover-More Travel Insurance said Prior to COVID-19, the vast majority of our policies provided cover for medical and additional expenses for pandemics, including COVID-19. Weve since moved to add cancellation cover to our travel insurance in response to feedback from our travel agents and our customers. We knew we had to do more. So we did.

Flights were and still are few and far between entering Australia. More than 450,000 Australians have returned home since March 2020. While its rare for a travel insurer to pay out in these circumstances, there are some things to look out for. Check whether your policy includes Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance or End Supplier Failure if its not included as standard, its possible to take out a stand-alone policy. Usually, this is considered specialist cover.

If you booked your flights as part of an ATOL-protected , you are more likely to have protection. In this case, you should contact your travel agent or operator. They will either make alternative travel plans for you or offer a full refund.

Some flight-only bookings made through a travel agent are also covered by . If thats the case, youll receive an ATOL certificate, which means you can claim a full refund.

Where you cant book an ATOL-protected package or flight, there are still a few precautions you can take.

As a general rule, you should always pay for your holiday or flight using a credit card. Booking on a credit card will give you protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, provided you spend between £100 and £30,000. If your airline collapsed, you’d be able to claim back what you paid for your flights from the credit card supplier, who is jointly liable with the airline to make sure you get what you paid for.

Cancellation Cover For Pre

If you suffer from a pre-existing medical condition you should declare it when you buy travel insurance to ensure that you are properly covered if you do have to cancel your holiday due to illness.

Remember, you would not be covered for cancellation due to illness if it was related to a pre-existing medical condition unless you had declared that medical condition when you purchase the travel insurance policy.

When Can I Claim For Cancellation

You will not be covered by your travel insurance policy if you change your mind and decide you no longer want to go on holiday. The trip needs to be cancelled for circumstances beyond your control. In Covid-19 times, this means that if travel advice changes, you need to wait for your operator to cancel rather than pulling the plug yourself.

The most common reasons for cancellation that are usually covered by insurers include:

  • If you, a travelling companion or a relative has a serious injury or becomes ill

  • If a travelling companion or relative dies

  • If you have been made redundant

  • If you have to go to court or have been called for jury duty

  • If you have to stay at home following a fire, flood or burglary of your property within 48 hours of your departure date, or if this happens while you are away

  • If you, or one of your party, becomes pregnant after you were sold the policy, or a doctor recommends you should not travel due to pregnancy complications

If the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination after you have bought your insurance

Check the policy carefully before you buy cover to see what is allowed and any exclusions. This will give you peace of mind and make it more likely that you can submit a successful claim.

Note: Travel insurance won’t cover you if you choose to go to a destination that is on the red list or where the FDCO advises against all but essential travel when you take the policy out.

So I Should Buy Cancel For Any Reason Right

Travelers who wanted to cancel trips as Covid-19 gathered steam, but before travel was shut off by governments across the globe, were often told that their travel insurance did not cover canceling out of fear unless they had purchased a cancel for any reason insurance upgrade, or C.F.A.R.

With C.F.A.R., a traveler is able to back out any time until a few days before departure and get some money back, usually 50 to 75 percent. Its more expensive than regular travel insurance and must be purchased within a short window after making the initial trip deposit, usually less than 21 days. Additionally, the policy only covers cancellations up to two or three days before the trip.

Using Travel Guards website, I priced insurance on a $10,000 trip to France. Its basic policy costs about $500 to insure. But to get C.F.A.R., I would have to take the preferred policy at about $554. Adding the C.F.A.R. option offering 50 percent back, cost $128, for a total of $682. If I canceled because of the pandemic, or for any other reason, I would only get $5,000 back, half of the insured amount. Less the premium, thats $4,318 net.

Cancel for any reason, Mr. Birnbaum said, is treated as insurance, but its not really. Insurance is protection against some fortuitous event. This policy, he said, covers a decision thats in your control such as changing your mind about taking a trip not a risk thats out of your control, like a car accident.

From possible winter restrictions to getting sick, there are still dozens of ways the pandemic could wreck your holiday, even if youve been vaccinated.

Thankfully, there are some insurers who offer protection for all or many of these.
