Fresh restrictions have been imposed on travellers from the UK to some EU countries as a result of the Omicron variant.

  • France travel ban: Imposed on 18 December, France bans UK travellers from entering the country without a compelling reason. Those arriving in France from Britain must quarantine for seven days, reduced to be just two if they provide a negative test after arrival
  • Germany travel ban: Imposed on 19 December, arrivals from the UK, Denmark, France, Norway and Lebanon must have a negative test and quarantine for two weeks, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated. German nationals and residents will still be allowed to enter.
  • Netherlands lockdown: On 19 December, another national lockdown was imposed with non-essential shops, bars, restaurants, and other public places including schools to shut until at least 14 January. From 22 December, all visitors to the Netherlands from the UK must self-isolate for 10 days on arrival.

What If A Close Relative Has Covid

The policy contains benefits that permit you to claim for alternative accommodation, cancellation costs, or associated additional expenses, whichever is lesser.

You must be travelling to New Zealand, or any other country deemed safe-to-travel to, by the Australian Government. The relative must be resident in either Australia or New Zealand.

Read your travel insurance Product Disclosure Statement. In the first instance, it’s up to you as the policyholder to establish that you have a valid claim under the policy terms and conditions. That generally means handing in lots of documentation.

Then it’s up to the insurer to decide if your claim is valid and that there are no policy exclusions that should be applied.

If you disagree with the insurer’s decision regarding your claim, raise a complaint via their internal dispute resolution service.

If you don’t get a satisfactory result from the insurer’s internal dispute resolution, escalate your complaint to AFCA.

Travel insurance should protect your safety

In an AFCA dispute, some travellers cancelled a trip to Great Britain and Ireland on 5 March 2020 amid increasing concerns about COVID-19.

Their Auto & General policy covered epidemics, but the insurer denied their claim on the basis that there was no travel ban in place at that time the Australian government travel ban didn’t come into effect until 25 March.

AFCA ruled that the travellers’ decision to cancel the trip was necessary for their safety

The travellers were aged in their 60s, making them potentially more vulnerable to serious ill health if they caught the virus that causes COVID-19. AFCA ruled that the policy covered epidemics and that the travellers’ decision to cancel the trip was necessary for their safety. This means the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 doesn’t allow the insurer to decline the claim.

What Is Not Covered

  • Countries with Level 4 travel advisories: Some insurers disclose that if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country, you will not receive coronavirus-related coverage. With cases surging in various countries unexpectedly, the list of Level 4 countries is constantly changing. Before booking a trip and purchasing a policy, make sure to check that the country does not have a Level 4 advisory.

  • Fear of getting sick while traveling: Canceling a trip because youre afraid youll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. Travel insurance providers have a list of standard reasons that qualify for cancellation, including: car accident, jury duty, terrorist act, military duty and other extenuating circumstances. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip , youll want to look into the cancel for any reason, or CFAR, supplemental upgrade, which is offered on some travel insurance plans. When you purchase CFAR, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance. Not all plans offer CFAR as an option, so research before you purchase if you’re interested in this add-on.

  • COVID-related events not directly related to you: If you planned on going to a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, your travel insurer will not reimburse your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.

Being proactive is the best method of prevention – wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and avoid close contact with people who are sick. The CDC also recommends wearing a mask in public settings. If you are sick, prevent the spread of illness by staying home, avoiding contact with others, cleaning surfaces and objects with disinfectant, and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. What Does Omicron Mean For Insurance

Youll need to check entry requirements for any country youre planning to visit. Some nations, such as France and Germany, are specifically restricting travellers from the UK due to its high case numbers.

So far Israel, Japan and Morocco have closed their borders to tourists entirely. Other countries now have stricter testing rules.

If youre now required to quarantine upon arrival, you likely wont be able to cancel and claim on your insurance, though you may be able to postpone your trip if your travel provider is flexible .

Then theres the risk you might come into contact with someone who has caught the Omicron variant. At the moment, even if you are vaccinated, youll need to isolate for 10 days.

With cases on the rise, you might be more likely to catch Covid yourself. This would also require you to self-isolate.

In either of these cases, there are some insurers who will consider cancellation claims. But not every insurer will, so check policy details carefully before you buy.

What Happens If I Am Not Allowed Entry Into My Destination Country

  • It is your responsibility to comply with any border restrictions in place at your destination country . If you do not comply with these requirements, then you will need to return home at your own cost.
  • Travel insurance will not provide cover for the cost of quarantine hotels on return to the UK, as this is not the purpose of travel insurance.
