Are There Any Other Options
Book Refundable Airline Tickets
Booking refundable airline tickets cost significantly more but may be a good option with so much uncertainty surrounding the future of air travel. Most airlines are issuing vouchers or waiving change fees for flights due to coronavirus concerns. The only way to get a full refund, however, is if you purchased a refundable ticket, if the airline cancels your flight, or if there is a significant schedule change.
Most U.S. and international airlines are currently waiving change fees and cancellation costs, although the date your ticket was purchased may determine waiver eligibility. If you are eligible for a waiver, you can change your travel dates, opt for a new destination, or receive a voucher to use for future travel. Fare differences may apply and, in some cases, fare differences may also be waived.
Cancel for Any Reason Coverage
Allows policy holders to cancel a trip over COVID-19 concerns, whereas traditional travel insurance plans do not.

Travelers must meet specific plan requirements and purchase a CFAR plan within a certain number of days from initial trip payment.
Trips usually must be cancelled at least 48 hours prior to departure to be eligible for coverage.

How we analyse travel insurance
We analyse and rate 52 key elements of travel insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to travellers when choosing and using a travel insurance policy, and weight it accordingly when calculating our total policy score.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. Weightings are then applied to the higher and lower element scores to enhance/reduce their impact on the overall policy score.

What Is Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a type of insurance that covers common problems when traveling. From trip interruptions to full cancellations, they can help protect the money you put down for your travel experience.
Common coverage includes more than just an unexpected trip stoppage. It can also cover lost or damaged luggage and changes to your itinerary for covered reasons, among other benefits.
Medical coverage is an important factor to consider, as your current health insurance may not work away from home. The best travel insurance includes coverage for medical treatment, dental emergencies, and medical transportation. If you have any pre-existing conditions or are at risk, its important to make sure your policy covers these, too.
Does Travel Insurance Cover Advisories And Warnings
There are some rare policies that provide trip cancellation coverage if there is a government-issued travel warning at your destination, says Moncrief. This coverage is not necessarily common, and the language varies significantly by provider, she says. In order to be covered, the policy must be purchased prior to the government-issued warning.
For example, iTravelInsureds Travel SE plan accepts government-issued advisories and warnings as a reason for trip cancellation. The policy says it covers a travel alert or travel warning for levels four and higher or, an evacuation order or, travel ban is issued, for cities listed on your itinerary after Your Effective Date for Trip Cancellation, to a destination specifically listed on Your Itinerary. The travel alert/warning, etc. must occur within thirty days of the scheduled Departure Date.
In this case, you could make a trip cancellation claim and be reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses. The warning or alert must come from the U.S. State Department.
If your base policy doesnt cover travel warnings, having cancel for any reason coverage would allow you to make a cancellation claim because of a travel advisory or warning.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It
While travel insurance may seem like an unnecessary extra expense, it can save you a significant amount of money in the event that something happens to cancel or interrupt your trip. Travel insurance can also help to cover the cost if you experience a medical emergency while away from home. Especially for large trips where youre spending a lot of money, travel insurance can help to provide peace of mind that youll be able to recoup the money youve paid if something unexpected happens.
That said, travel insurance might not be necessary in all cases. You should check to see what coverage is already available to you through other venues. For instance, many credit cards cover the cost of lost or delayed luggage if you purchase your airfare using that card. Travel insurance may also not be necessary for routine travel within the same country, like going to visit a family member or friend for a few days.
Which Policies Have The Best Coronavirus Cover
From possible winter restrictions to getting sick, there are still dozens of ways the pandemic could wreck your holiday, even if youve been vaccinated.
Thankfully, there are some insurers who offer protection for all or many of these.
We reviewed hundreds of policies earlier this year, sorting them into four categories based on the strength of their Covid cover. From weakest to strongest these are:
- Basic For policies providing emergency medical cover and repatriation for coronavirus while youre away.
- Low Insurance that covers unrecouped costs from cancelling your holiday if youre diagnosed with Covid-19.
- Superior Policies that cover cancellation if youre told to self-isolate without testing positive yourself, for example if you receive a test and trace notification via the NHS app.
- Complete Our highest rating. Complete policies cover you for cancellation if you cant travel due to changes in FCDO advice or because of a lockdown.
We know of just five policies that meet the criteria for our Complete rating. These are from Barclays, Churchill, Direct Line, HSBC and Nationwide.
The Barclays Travel Pack add-on is for current account holders, and HSBCs Select and Cover is available to current account, savings account, mortgage and credit card customers.

If you have upcoming travel plans and are considering a travel insurance policy, check if it covers COVID. Not all providers do, and it’s important to know for sure. So, how can you tell if you’ve bought travel insurance that covers COVID?
As with many things in life, the short answer is: “It depends.” And the long answer is: You can only start to determine if your insurance covers COVID when you understand what type of coverage you have, which provider you bought it from and what the exact reason is for your trip cancellation.
While we can give general guidance as to most travel insurance plans, it is in your best interest to give your insurance provider a call to verify whether a given policy will cover coronavirus-related interruptions.
Where Can I Travel
Fresh restrictions have been imposed on travellers from the UK to some EU countries as a result of the Omicron variant.
- France travel ban: Imposed on 18 December, France bans UK travellers from entering the country without a compelling reason. Those arriving in France from Britain must quarantine for seven days, reduced to be just two if they provide a negative test after arrival
- Germany travel ban: Imposed on 19 December, arrivals from the UK, Denmark, France, Norway and Lebanon must have a negative test and quarantine for two weeks, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated. German nationals and residents will still be allowed to enter.
- Netherlands lockdown: On 19 December, another national lockdown was imposed with non-essential shops, bars, restaurants, and other public places including schools to shut until at least 14 January. From 22 December, all visitors to the Netherlands from the UK must self-isolate for 10 days on arrival.

What If A Close Relative Has Covid
Yes, there is provision to claim. You’re covered for cancellation and any additional expenses should you need to return home.
The policy contains benefits that permit you to claim for alternative accommodation, cancellation costs, or associated additional expenses, whichever is lesser.
You must be travelling to New Zealand, or any other country deemed safe-to-travel to, by the Australian Government. The relative must be resident in either Australia or New Zealand.
Your Travel Insurer Declined Your Covid
Read your travel insurance Product Disclosure Statement. In the first instance, it’s up to you as the policyholder to establish that you have a valid claim under the policy terms and conditions. That generally means handing in lots of documentation.
Then it’s up to the insurer to decide if your claim is valid and that there are no policy exclusions that should be applied.
If you disagree with the insurer’s decision regarding your claim, raise a complaint via their internal dispute resolution service.
If you don’t get a satisfactory result from the insurer’s internal dispute resolution, escalate your complaint to AFCA.
Travel insurance should protect your safety
In an AFCA dispute, some travellers cancelled a trip to Great Britain and Ireland on 5 March 2020 amid increasing concerns about COVID-19.
Their Auto & General policy covered epidemics, but the insurer denied their claim on the basis that there was no travel ban in place at that time the Australian government travel ban didn’t come into effect until 25 March.
AFCA ruled that the travellers’ decision to cancel the trip was necessary for their safety
The travellers were aged in their 60s, making them potentially more vulnerable to serious ill health if they caught the virus that causes COVID-19. AFCA ruled that the policy covered epidemics and that the travellers’ decision to cancel the trip was necessary for their safety. This means the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 doesn’t allow the insurer to decline the claim.

What Is Not Covered
Countries with Level 4 travel advisories: Some insurers disclose that if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country, you will not receive coronavirus-related coverage. With cases surging in various countries unexpectedly, the list of Level 4 countries is constantly changing. Before booking a trip and purchasing a policy, make sure to check that the country does not have a Level 4 advisory.
Fear of getting sick while traveling: Canceling a trip because youre afraid youll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. Travel insurance providers have a list of standard reasons that qualify for cancellation, including: car accident, jury duty, terrorist act, military duty and other extenuating circumstances. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip , youll want to look into the cancel for any reason, or CFAR, supplemental upgrade, which is offered on some travel insurance plans. When you purchase CFAR, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance. Not all plans offer CFAR as an option, so research before you purchase if you’re interested in this add-on.
COVID-related events not directly related to you: If you planned on going to a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, your travel insurer will not reimburse your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.
How Can I Prevent Contracting Coronavirus
Being proactive is the best method of prevention – wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and avoid close contact with people who are sick. The CDC also recommends wearing a mask in public settings. If you are sick, prevent the spread of illness by staying home, avoiding contact with others, cleaning surfaces and objects with disinfectant, and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Please refer to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention for the latest information on prevention.

What Does Omicron Mean For Insurance
Youll need to check entry requirements for any country youre planning to visit. Some nations, such as France and Germany, are specifically restricting travellers from the UK due to its high case numbers.
So far Israel, Japan and Morocco have closed their borders to tourists entirely. Other countries now have stricter testing rules.
If youre now required to quarantine upon arrival, you likely wont be able to cancel and claim on your insurance, though you may be able to postpone your trip if your travel provider is flexible .
Then theres the risk you might come into contact with someone who has caught the Omicron variant. At the moment, even if you are vaccinated, youll need to isolate for 10 days.
With cases on the rise, you might be more likely to catch Covid yourself. This would also require you to self-isolate.
In either of these cases, there are some insurers who will consider cancellation claims. But not every insurer will, so check policy details carefully before you buy.

What Happens If I Am Not Allowed Entry Into My Destination Country
- It is your responsibility to comply with any border restrictions in place at your destination country . If you do not comply with these requirements, then you will need to return home at your own cost.
- Travel insurance will not provide cover for the cost of quarantine hotels on return to the UK, as this is not the purpose of travel insurance.

What Should You Look For In A Good Travel Insurance Policy
TRAVEL insurance policies can vary a great deal, but here are some “must have
- Medical expenses – A good policy will give cover of £1million or more for travel in Europe and £2million or more for the USA
- Repatriation service – The costs of getting you back to the UK for medical reasons should be covered automatically by your policy
- Cancellation and curtailment – A good policy will cover you for £2,000 or more if you have to cancel or shorten your holiday
- Missed departure – Covers additional accommodation costs and travel expenses up to £500 or more if you miss your flight due to circumstances out of your control
- Delay – You’ll usually be covered for £250 or more if your travel plans are delayed due to circumstances out of your control
- Baggage cover – Covers you if your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen. Look for policies that have cover of £1,500 or more.
Some providers are offering new policies that cover medical costs if you catch the virus while abroad but stop short of covering cancellation costs.
However, over the past month a handful of insurers have said they will cover coronavirus cancellation costs but it all depends on the circumstances.
Before buying a policy, you will need to look out for any pandemic exemption clauses that mean you won’t be covered.

Can You Get Travel Insurance To Cover Covid
Some but not all travel insurance policies will provide limited cover if you or someone you’re travelling with gets COVID-19, or if the accommodation or tour operator you’ve booked has to shut down because there’s been a COVID-19 case there.
Travel insurance is unlikely to cover you for cancellation due to government travel bans.
Cover will likely be limited to medical, quarantine and sometimes cancellation costs if you contract COVID-19.
