However, you wont be able to claim if you buy a policy after your redundancy has been announced. Its also very unlikely youll receive a pay out if you take voluntary redundancy.
Check the terms and conditions before you buy to make sure youd qualify for unemployment protection.

Havent Left Home Yet Purchase Cancel For Any Reason Or Coronavirus
If youre planning for a trip in the near future, you may still be able to purchase coverage now.
But while you can usually purchase basic travel insurance up to 24 hours before departure, most premium add-ons such as cancel for any reason coverage must be purchased within a certain number of days from when you made your initial trip payment. If youve already had a trip planned for some time but havent purchased insurance yet, do some research to see if youre still within the correct timeframe from your initial trip payment in order to qualify for cancel for any reason coverage or other time-sensitive benefits.
If youre worried you may need to cancel your trip for a pandemic-related reason, a cancel for any reason insurance plan could be a good investment to hedge your bets. Some comprehensive plans will offer cancel for any reason coverage if all eligibility requirements are met, but that option will cost more usually an additional 40-50% on top of the base premium.
With Squaremouth travel insurance, for example, youll have to purchase cancel for any reason insurance within 14 to 21 days of making your initial payment on vacation expenses, and you also have to insure 100% of your trip costs in addition to canceling your trip at least 48 hours before departure time to receive a refund of up to 75% of the trip cost.
What Alternatives Are There To Income Protection Insurance
The income protection cover that we offer isnt the only option available to you. Here are a couple of alternatives to consider:
- Mortgage payment protection if you suddenly become unemployed, or are off work through sickness or injury, mortgage payment protection could cover the cost of your monthly mortgage payments.

What To Do If You Get Covid
First of all, when booking your trip, you should retain all receipts, tickets and itineraries in case your trip has to be cancelled or altered.
At the first sign of a Covid-19 infection or related travel disruption, you should call your insurer and ask for guidance. Many insurers maintain a 24-hour hotline for travel claims.
To make a claim you will usually have to submit your insurer’s form with supporting documents within the deadline mentioned in your contract . Don’t wait until you’re back in Singapore to check which documents you need.
If you catch Covid-19 while you’re in Singapore, you will likely have to submit the results of a PCR Swab Test or Antigen Rapid Test conducted at a clinic or hospital.
It gets a bit more complicated if you’re overseas. The insurer will likely require documentation from the hospital as well as a doctor’s letter stating that you are unfit to travel and/or recommending treatment.
If you need to be quarantined overseas, you should make sure you have a quarantine order from the government, otherwise you may not be able to claim for quarantine allowance. Remember to ask for this as not all countries automatically issue such documentation.

If An Employee Contracts Coronavirus Is My Business Responsible For Related Costs If So Am I Able To Claim This
All workers compensation claims require an employee to show that the injury or illness arose both out of and in the course of their employment. If they cant demonstrate this, they will not be compensated.
Because workers comp statutes vary quite a bit by state, each situation should be examined on a case-by-case basis. These reviews must consider the statutes of the relevant jurisdiction.
We recommend contacting your carriers claims department to begin a formal claims process if youre curious about coverage.

Your Trip Is Already Refundable
If you book a flight through an airline like Southwest, a travel insurance claims adjuster may see that the airline issued travel credit for the value of a canceled ticket, and refuse to further reimburse you for your sunk travel costs. This is especially important to consider now that most U.S. airlines have committed to permanently removing change fees.
While many of us purchase nonrefundable flights these days, this would also be the case if you purchase a fully-refundable premium-cabin flight in cash. For example, an underwriter may ask why you didnt pursue a refund with the airline directly instead.
Gross Profits Insurance Vs Gross Earnings Insurance
Gross earnings insurance, commonly used in the United States, is another form of business interruption insurance coverage. But there are key differences between this kind of coverage and gross profits insurance. Gross earnings are the total amount of sales or revenue, minus the cost of goods sold . This kind of insurance covers a reduction in the insured party’s gross earnings stemming from direct damage loss.
Unlike gross profits insurance, gross earnings insurance is generally less costly for the insured. Because gross profits insurance has broader coverage, premiums are higher. Premiums for gross earnings insurance, on the other hand, are cheaper because the coverage is less comprehensive.

Loss Of Job Insurance Policies From General Insurance Provider: What You Need To Know
While it is illegal for Australian life insurance providers to offer redundancy cover, general insurance providers can and do offer different types of job loss policies:
- Involuntary unemployment: These policies will provide a monthly benefit if you lose your job through no fault of your own and due to circumstances beyond your control.
- Sickness of accidental injury: If illness or injury mean you are unable to work, this type of cover is designed to help you keep paying your bills on time.
However, a number of restrictions apply to loss of job policies from general insurance providers. First of all, while life insurance policies are guaranteed renewable, the provider can choose to end a general insurance policy at any time. For example, if the unemployment rate skyrockets and an insurer decides they no longer want to offer redundancy cover, they can cancel any policies already in place.
Other policies may require you to have signed up to their policy for a certain period of time before you are eligible for cover, while there may also be a waiting period once you lose your job before the cover actually kicks in. Read the PDS of each policy closely so you know exactly what each policy covers.
What Our Expert Says
While it can be tempting to go for the cheapest policy to cut your travel costs you need to look at what levels of protection the policy offers. Cheaper plans may have lower levels of cover and you may be expected to pay more towards a claim too. Choose a policy based on the cover it offers, rather than just the price.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Lost Items
Yes, your travel insurance may cover certain misplaced items, depending on your type of cover.
Insurers may not compensate lost belongings if you are negligent , you dont report the theft to the authorities or if certain valuables like your computer or jewellery are placed in your check-in luggage.
In order to claim, you must be able to prove the value and your ownership of the items. Youll also be restricted to only claiming up to your policys benefit limit.
What If My Flight Was Cancelled Can I Still Claim For Cancellation
If your airline cancels the flight they are obliged to provide a reimbursement of the cost of your flight or provide alternative re-routing options for you. However, if you are unable to depart due to your flight having been cancelled by your airline on the grounds of health and safety because of the snow, and no alternative flight is available for more than 24 hours from the time shown on your travel ticket, you will be able to claim for unused travel and accommodation costs, which you have paid or legally have to pay and cannot get back.

You Rarely Plan Big Complicated Or Dangerous Trips
Many cards limit protection claims under a certain dollar amount within 12 months. So if youve already filed a large insurance claim with your credit card company within the past year, independent travel insurance might be a wise purchase to consider for your next trip.
But if youre only on the road once or twice a year, those limited protection claims might be sufficient for your needs.
Is Travel Insurance Worth It
We believe so, as travel cover provides peace of mind for a range of scenarios including injury or illness.
When travelling internationally, you arent always afforded the same health care services and cover as you are in Australia. Moreover, you cant always access these services without suffering a major blow to your budget. This means if you were to fall ill or become injured overseas, you could be hit with major out-of-pocket costs.
On top of this, theres a chance your belongings could be stolen or damaged during your travels as well. Could you afford to replace your laptop or camera equipment? How about the contents of a lost suitcase? Depending on your level of cover and your policys Product Disclosure Statement , your insurer can compensate you for the loss of, or damage to, your belongings while youre travelling both domestically and internationally.
Furthermore, if your flight is delayed or cancelled, and you dont have travel insurance, you could be left to cover the costs of a new flight or alternative arrangements. Dont forget that a cancelled flight can have major repercussions for your travel perhaps youll miss your connecting flight or a pre-paid event, like a concert.
As travel insurers cover several specified events, why not enjoy peace of mind knowing youre protected when you need it most?

What Does Doubling Up On Travel Insurance Mean
Doubling up on insurance means that youve taken out more than one type of cover. This might be because youve taken out a travel insurance policy but also have cover from another source, like a bank or credit card provider.
Having two forms of cover doesnt mean youll get twice the pay-out. And doubling up could delay your claim being processed, as both providers may ask each other to cover the cost. So, its not usually an advantage to be double insured.
What Travel Insurance Might Not Cover
Its important to know that while there are many reasons to buy travel insurance, certain things may not be covered under travel insurance. If you have a preexisting condition, look for a plan that provides a preexisting condition waiver. If youre visiting an area with political unrest, check into what coverage a policy provides if you wish to cancel due to problems in the area. Travel insurance policies cover some incidences of tour operator defaults due to financial issues. Look into how thats handled before booking your trip.

Does Loss Of Earnings Insurance Cover Redundancy
This can either be with an Accident, Sickness and Unemployment policy, which would pay out short-term if you couldnt work through accident, sickness or unemployment.
Alternatively, you could opt for Income Protection with a separate Unemployment Insurance policy bolted on, which would provide longer-term protection for accidents and sickness and protection for redundancy for up to 2 years.
Does Income Protection Cover Loss Of Job
Not necessarily. Many Australians mistakenly believe that their income policy will cover them in the instance that they lose their job. Unlike policies in the United States and United Kingdom, however, income protection in Australia from life insurance companies will not provide a benefit payment if the policy holder is involuntarily unemployed or made redundant.
Unless you have selected an additional extra that is offered by the insurer, usually called involuntary unemployment cover, or redundancy insurance, you will not be covered if you lose your job.
‘General insurers’ will offer loss of job cover
There are a number of policies offered by general insurance companies in Australia that will provide a payout for a defined number of months in the event that the insured is made redundant. This can sometimes be packaged together with income protection.
How can I find a general insurer?
Some brands will cover products from both a life insurer and a general insurer e.g. ANZ’s Income Protection Policy covers both
- Income Protection from OnePath Life Limited
- Involuntary Unemployment from OnePath General Insurance
In addition, even though policies from life insurance companies may not provide a benefit payment, some policies do provide other support to the policyholder when they suffer the loss of their job. These include:

Which Insurers Offer Job Loss Insurance
Redundancy insurance is not generally offered as a standalone policy. Usually, it comes as an optional extra with income protection policies.

Due to the current Coronavirus crisis, many insurers have temporarily paused offering redundancy cover options for new policies. If you have an existing policy with this type of cover, your insurance should still be honoured but you should always double check driectly with your provider.
