When Family Members Are Traveling With You What Does Travel Insurance Cover
Some of our most popular plans, the OneTrip Prime Plan and the OneTrip Premier Plan, cover children 17 and under for free when theyre traveling with a parent or grandparent.
If your family member is also your traveling companion meaning a person traveling with you whose name appears with yours on the same trip arrangement and who will accompany you on your trip then other travel insurance benefits may apply. For example:
- If your traveling companion suffers a covered illness, injury or develops a medical condition is quarantined is involved in a traffic accident on the departure date and needs medical assistance and/or critical vehicle repair gets divorced loses their job or is deployed for military service, these may be covered reasons for trip cancellation.
- If your traveling companion cancels or interrupts their trip for a covered reason, trip interruption benefits may reimburse you for additional accommodation fees youre required to pay, such as a single supplement fee from a cruise line, if you prepaid for shared accommodations.
- If your traveling companion is hospitalized while youre on your trip, trip interruption benefits may cover extra accommodation and transportation expenses up to limits set in your plan.
Coronavirus And Travel Insurance Faqs
This is a rapidly changing situation. Please regularly check this site and the CDC’s Novel Coronavirus webpage for travel updates.
Your travel insurance policy should list or describe the types of events it covers. Events that are not listed on, or not described in, the policy are typically not covered. If an event covered by your travel policy occurs, your coverage may include needed medical attention, protection for your luggage, and reimbursement of prepaid expenses when your trip is interrupted or cancelled. Because coverage varies across policies, you will need to read your particular policy.
Standard travel insurance policies cover trip cancellation or interruption. Coverage is afforded for cancellation or interruption for events outside of your control and typically need to be stated expressly in the policy. Examples of events that are commonly covered under trip cancellation/trip interruption policies include: the illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member a terrorism incident inclement weather and a natural disaster. Exclusions may apply so you will need to read your particular policy.
Please note that standard travel insurance does not provide coverage if you choose not to travel because of COVID-19 fears or concerns. Please see Cancel for Any Reason protection? Below for more information.
How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost
Travel insurance cost is primarily based on the price of the trip and the age of the traveler. A 35-year-old might expect a policy to add 3% to 5% to the cost of a trip while a 60-year-old might pay around 10%, says Jonathan Harty, owner of a MA-based travel agency. It can be a small price to pay to safeguard your investment in a honeymoon or the trip of a lifetime.

Travel Insurance And Covid
Its impossible to predict when well be able to safely travel again. Several travel restrictions remain in place across the world and health officials continue to recommend avoiding non-essential travel. But if you need to travel outside your province of residence for essential reasonslike work, or if you have family obligationstravel insurance is more important than ever before.
Why Buy Travel Insurance
Its a known fact that medical care is expensive. As we can see in the example below, the amounts billed following a hospital stay of just a few days can quickly add up to several thousand dollars.
And unfortunately, the patient will remain responsible for most of these costs if they don’t have travel insurance, as provincial health insurance plans reimburse only a small portion of medical care abroad.
If you reside in Ontario, as of January 1, 2020, OHIP no longer covers most costs incurred following a medical emergency outside of Canada. Coverage for up to $210 per treatment will be offered to travellers who need renal dialysis.

Are You Already Covered
When my oldest daughter was about 10 months old, we drove down to New York City to visit friends who were living there. On our last day in town, we woke up to discover a baby with one eye swollen shut. We rushed to our friends pediatrician who diagnosed that shed scratched her eyeball in her sleep, a relatively common occurrence we were told. The doctor prescribed antibiotic drops, and told us not to worry. Oh, and dont forget to leave your $200 cash on the way out the door.
We were lucky my wifes employee health plan included travel insurance that covered most of the cost of the doctors visit, plus 80 per cent of the cost of the prescription .
But even if you dont have an employee health plan with travel insurance, you may already have some out-of-province healthcare coverage. The Scotiabank Gold American Express, for example, provides holders with up to $1,000,000 in emergency travel insurance coverage for things such as ambulance charges, hospital stays, and doctors bills, for a period of 25 days .
How Does Travel Medical Insurance Differ From My Health Insurance
Travel medical insurance is different from your health insurance because travel medical insurance is a supplemental policy that helps protect you while youre traveling. Its only valid for the length of your trip and is meant to supplement your health insurance when youre out of network.
If you suffer a medical emergency while youre on your trip, your health insurance policy may not cover the cost of the treatment and services you receive. Even if you travel within the United States, your policy may not provide coverage out of network.
Travel medical insurance can help fill in the gaps while also providing additional coverage to help keep you safe and healthy on your trip.

When Travel Insurance Covers A Medical Emergency
If you get sick or injured while traveling abroad, most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, likely wont extend coverage overseas. However, medical and medical evacuation benefits are built into most travel insurance policies, and can cover you in multiple countries while youre traveling.
There are two main travel medical insurance benefits: Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation.
Emergency Medical coverage can reimburse you for the costs associated with medical treatment for an illness or injury during your trip. This can include coverage for physician services, ambulance services, and hospital charges, among other expenses.
Medical Evacuation is included alongside Emergency Medical coverage. This benefit can arrange for your transportation to the nearest hospital in the event of a medical emergency, and can bring you home if the hospital determines its necessary in your situation.
When Travel Insurance Covers A Travel Delay
Travel insurance covers more than cancellations and medical emergencies it can also help you if your flight is delayed or you miss your connecting flight.
The Travel Delay benefit is available to help if your flight is delayed for a reason outside of your control, such as inclement weather or a mechanical breakdown of your plane. Travel insurance can refund your meals and hotel accommodations during your delay.
Missed Connection is for travelers who are delayed, and incur additional costs to catch up to their trip. This benefit can help you if you missed your departure for a reason covered by your policy, such as severe weather, a mechanical breakdown, or an accident on your way to the airport.

Examples Of Travelers That Might Buy It
Travelers like these should purchase travel medical insurance:
- US Citizens going abroad. A typical health insurance plan doesnt extend outside the U.S. borders, so if youre traveling abroad, youll want travel medical coverage for accidental illnesses and injuries that occur outside your health insurance coverage zone.
- Visitors to the US. When family members visit from abroad and stay a few days or even a year, they should have coverage for their stay.
- Business travelers working overseas. If your health insurance plan doesnt extend outside the U.S. , youll need some medical and evacuation coverage if youre working overseas.
- Expats and long-term travelers. Not only does your own health insurance fail to cover you outside the U.S., if you are visiting multiple countries, youll want to ensure you have the same coverage no matter where you travel.
- Missionaries and foreign aid workers. Just because you are traveling to make a difference in someone elses life doesnt mean something bad cant happen to you. Be sure you are protected in case you have a medical emergency or need to be evacuated to safety.
Travel Insurance Covers Emergency Evacuations
Emergency Evacuation Coverage will pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically equipped flights back home, and oftentimes will transport you to the hospital of your choice for care.
Evacuation expenses can be devastating.
An ambulance to the hospital, an airlift to a more adequate hospital, getting you back home on board a medically-staffed flight afterwardsevacuation expenses can easily cost $50,000.

Primary Vs Secondary Coverage
Travel medical insurance plans will refer to medical coverage as primary or secondary. Primary means that you can submit a claim to your travel medical insurance company before submitting to any other insurer. When the policy is secondary, you will need to submit your claim to your primary insurance provider before you can submit a claim to the travel insurance provider.
For example, say you break your leg on vacation and have to go to the emergency room right away. If your travel health insurance is primary, you can pay your medical bill with your credit card and then submit a claim directly to the travel insurer.
However, if your travel medical coverage is secondary, you will first have to submit this claim to your U.S.-based medical insurer even though they may deny the claim . You may even be required to include the refusal notice from your primary insurance along with your claim to your secondary travel health insurer.
When Travel Insurance Covers Lost Or Delayed Luggage
The travel insurance coverage for your personal items can include lost or damaged items, or delayed luggage.
If your luggage is delayed, you can be refunded up to the policys benefit limit, to purchase clothes and other essentials after 12-24 hours. This benefit wont refund the cost of the actual items that are delayed, however, if your luggage is permanently lost or damaged, you can be reimbursed to replace the lost items.
Coverage for lost or damaged luggage is limited to a per item maximum, typically ranging from $250-$500. If you travel with expensive items, Squaremouth recommends insuring them on your homeowners insurance policy.

Do I Need To Have Primary Health Insurance In The Us To Be Eligible For Travel Medical Insurance
The answer to this question is: maybe. It depends on the type of coverage you have. If your single-trip plan refers to your medical coverage as primary, you dont need another health insurance policy. However, if the coverage provided under your single-trip plan is secondary, then you must have primary health insurance.
As noted above, all multi-trip plans require that you have primary medical insurance coverage in the U.S.

The biggest question we get from customers is: What happens if I get Covid during travel and what if I have to quarantine? said Jeremy Murchland, the president of Seven Corners, a travel insurance management company. Covid has created a much broader awareness of travel insurance.

Travel Medical Coverage In Comprehensive Plans
With a comprehensive travel insurance plan, travelers will have travel medical coverage as a part of their coverage. Travel medical coverage may be very similar between what is available in conjunction with a comprehensive plan and a specific travel medical plan, however the premiums will vary between the travel medical and comprehensive plans.
Anyone looking for robust coverage for baggage or interruption should consider a comprehensive plan. Travel medical plans are excellent in assisting travelers to find adequate medical care while traveling abroad. Always think safety first.
What Is Travel Insurance
Many companies selling tickets or travel packages, give consumers the option to purchase travel insurance, also known as travelers insurance. Some travel policies cover damage to personal property, rented equipment, such as rental cars, or even the cost of paying a ransom.
Frequently sold as a package, travel insurance may include several types of coverage. The main categories of travel insurance include trip cancellation or interruption coverage, baggage and personal effects coverage, medical expense coverage, and accidental death or flight accident coverage.
Coverage often includes 24/7 emergency services, such as replacing lost passports, cash wire assistance, and re-booking canceled flights. Also, some travel insurance policies may duplicate existing coverage from other providers or offer protection for costs that are refundable by other means.

The Benefits Of Travel Medical Insurance
Investing in a travel medical insurance policy offers a number of benefits. Here are a few:
- Peace of mind Medical emergencies can happen without warning. It may provide some peace of mind knowing that your vacation budget wont be decimated by the cost of unexpected injuries and illnesses.
- No need to delay care With travel medical insurance, you can focus on getting the care or treatment you need right away, rather than delaying treatment until youve returned home.
- Foreign language help Unless youre fluent in the countrys official language, communicating with medical personnel about your condition can be challenging. Your travel medical insurance provider can help facilitate emergency services so you can effectively have these conversations.
Without travel medical insurance, youll be handling these unexpected expenses on your own. At best, that could put a dent in your vacation budget, and, at worst, it could put you heavily into debt or put your health at risk.
How To Choose Travel Medical Insurance
The medical risks you face when traveling outside the U.S. are hard to quantify. Basically, the chances of facing a major medical problem are small very small, for medevac but the financial consequences of a serious event are potentially quite large.
Fortunately, travel health insurance prices are not bad. As with all travel insurance, my suggestion is that you check with one or two of the online travel insurance agencies, enter your personal details, trip details, and the coverages you want, and select the least expensive policy that meets your needs. Some of the major agencies include InsureMyTrip.com, Squaremouth, and QuoteWright.
