Work Out How Much Your Valuables Are Worth
Expensive items may cost you more to insure. Think about what you’re taking with you. Consider what it would cost to replace those items if they get lost, stolen or damaged.
Policies vary when it comes to how they cover valuable items. They often have limits on the value for each item, and adding cover for valuables can vary from 100s of dollars to 1000s.
- Check individual item limits on your baggage cover. You may need to take out extra insurance to cover your valuables properly.
- Check the excess. On many policies, it’s more than the value of key items you’re taking. Consider paying extra to reduce or remove your excess.
- Always check the fine print on your policy. This is in the PDS. See what items they exclude, and the situations they’ll cover.

Medical Benefits For Covid
Most travel insurance providers on Squaremouths website are offering Coronavirus Medical coverage for the pandemic, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation. This coverage can only apply to travelers who contract COVID during their trip and require medical attention.
Emergency Medical coverage for coronavirus specifically covers the treatment of COVID-19 for travelers who unexpectedly contract the virus while traveling. Squaremouth recommends a minimum of $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage to account for COVID-19 related medical care.
Medical Evacuation coverage can provide transportation to the nearest adequate hospital if a traveler contracts coronavirus during their trip. If the treating physician determines they should return home to receive further medical attention, this benefit can also cover those transportation expenses. Squaremouth recommends a minimum of $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage to account for potentially high evacuation expenses.
Medical coverage varies per travel insurance provider. Below are the providers that may still provide medical benefits for newly purchased policies:
- AXA Assistance USA
- Global Underwriters
- HTH Travel Insurance
- John Hancock
- USI Affinity
In addition to the providers above, others are only covering medical expenses related to the coronavirus to insureds who bought a policy prior to the outbreak.
Think About What You’ll Do There
Insurers exclude a lot of activities in their standard policies. Even common activities, like going on a cruise or skiing. You may need to pay extra to ensure you’re covered for what you’re planning to do. Or, get a specialised policy. Check the policy’s fine print.
- Check the list of activities that are specifically included or excluded in your insurance.
- Check their definitions for activities. For example, walking in the mountains my be considered mountain climbing above a certain altitude.
- You might need to pay for extra cover for your activities. This is often the case for skiing, bungee jumping, scuba diving, hiking or riding a motorcycle.
- If youre planning to drive, check if you’re already covered or can pay extra. It could be cheaper through your travel insurer, compared to getting another policy from the car hire company.
See our general advice for the activities you plan to do.

Is It Safe To Fly When Pregnant
If you take the proper precautions, travelling during pregnancy should be perfectly safe.
Current NHS advice doesnt advise against travelling while pregnant. However, the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can be associated with nausea, vomiting, tiredness, and higher risks such as miscarriage, which may mean you want to avoid travelling during this time.
Travelling towards the end of your pregnancy can be tiring and uncomfortable for you, but its also generally riskier. The chances of going into labour increase at around 37 weeks so you may want to avoid travelling after this time.
Do I Still Need Pregnancy Travel Insurance If I Have An Ehic Card
Although neither are compulsory, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office strongly recommends you have both a valid EHIC/GHIC card and comprehensive travel insurance in place if youre visiting Europe. The EHIC/GHIC are not alternatives to travel insurance.
After Brexit, and the UK officially left the EU with a deal in place, things have changed. You wont be able to apply for an EHIC anymore, but, if you have one already, issued before the end of 2020, then itll still be valid until the expiry date.
However, the UK government has introduced a replacement called the Global Health Insurance Card . If you dont have an EHIC, or once yours expires, you can apply for a GHIC here, and it should arrive within 10 days. The GHIC will offer the same cover as the EHIC did in EU countries.
Although it will cover any pregnancy-related medical treatment in a public hospital in another EEA country or Switzerland, it wont cover private treatment, loss of luggage, cancellations, delays or repatriation.

Travel During Pregnancy: What Does Travel Insurance Cover
Some of the most common questions we get at Allianz Global Assistance are about traveling while pregnant. While most pregnant women can safely travel without incident, sometimes complications arise and customers wonder, “What does travel insurance cover?”
Heres the quick answer: Travel insurance can cover certain situations that result from unforeseen pregnancy complications, or a pregnancy that occurs after youve purchased your plan. Travel insurance typically does not cover trip cancellations or other travel losses resulting from normal pregnancy.
Like any other kind of insurance, travel insurance includes specific coverage definitions and restrictions. Read your agreement carefully, and if you have any questions about coverage, call. Pregnant women should consult their doctors with concerns and questions about safe travel.
If youre pregnant, or you might be soon, its wise to protect upcoming trips. Maximize your coverage window by purchasing travel protection as soon as possible. Our most popular plan is OneTrip Prime, which includes substantial benefits for trip cancellation/interruption and medical emergencies.

Meet The Terms Of Your Policy
It is your responsibility to know and understand the terms of your insurance policy. Read the fine print carefully and ask for help, if you need it.
The information you provide must be accurate and complete. If you have any questions, contact the insurance company. Ask them to clarify the issue in writing.
Get approval from your insurer before you undergo medical treatment. Travel health insurance rarely covers routine health checkups, non-emergency care and cosmetic surgery. It may not cover mental health disorders, drug- or alcohol-related incidents, or extreme sports such as bungee jumping and rock climbing.
Get a detailed report and invoice from your doctor or hospital before leaving the country where you received medical treatment. Trying to get the proper paperwork from thousands of kilometres away can be frustrating. Always submit the original receipts for medical services or prescriptions you received abroad. Keep a copy of the documents for your files.
Carry your insurance information with you while you are travelling. Leave a copy of the information with a friend or relative at home.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Pregnancy
No, unfortunately, most travel insurance companies do not cover pregnancy nor pregnancy-related issues, such as going into labor, going to the doctor for a routine check-up, or treatment for morning sickness.
If you go to the doctor for a pregnancy-related issue while you are in the US, you will have to pay the bill from your own pocket. If you go into labor while you are in the US, you will have to pay the medical bill from your own pocket. If theres a complication during labor and you have to stay in the hospital for a longer period of time and receive additional medical treatment, you will have to pay for those expenses yourself as well.
The most that travel insurance companies will cover is any complications that may come from pregnancy, but that are not usual or expected in a normal pregnancy.
For example, complications of pregnancy in travel health insurance terms usually means an illness or condition that is made worse from pregnancy, but not actually caused by pregnancy therefore a condition that is not common or associated with pregnancy. Complications of pregnancy may include miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, and eclampsia, or hyperemesis gravidarum.
Additionally, even if a health insurance plan does offer coverage for pregnancy, the amount of coverage that they offer is very limited.
Think About Your Age And Health
Your age and health will impact the type of policy you need, and how much it costs you. This especially applies to people with pre-existing conditions.
- You must declare all pre-existing health conditions to your insurer.
- If you’re not sure if your condition is covered, ask your insurer.
- Your insurer may ask for a health check and medical assessment. Ask your insurer if they’ll cover your condition automatically or you’ll need an assessment.
- Most policies have an age limit. Mature Australians often pay more for cover.

How Do I Claim On My Travel Insurance
You should first bear in mind that insurers will only consider your claim after you have checked whether your holiday provider will offer a refund. If you accept a refund, vouchers or a credit note from your holiday provider you will not be able to claim from your insurer. Doing so is known as a double claim.
If a refund from the holiday provider is out of the question you should contact your insurer to claim for all non-refundable costs. This may include flights and accommodation but also transfer and excursion costs, for example.
Deadlines for claims should be stated in your policy. It may still be worth trying to claim even if the deadline has passed as some insurers have been more flexible with their deadlines during the pandemic.
Is There Any Visitors Insurance Plan Available That Would Provide Any Kind Of Pregnancy Related Coverage
Yes. There are a couple of visitors insurance plans available that would, for first 26 weeks of pregnancy, cover only the complications of pregnancy that are distinct from any maternity related routine expenses.e.g., Atlas America insurance and Visit USA-HealthCare.
Please note that the way the weeks of pregnancy are calculated in the U.S. may be different than the way you may be used to in your home country. While many countries count the pregnancy duration from the day of conception, in the U.S., it is counted from the date of last menstrual period. Therefore, you may need to add about two weeks to your calculation, as appropriate.

What Is The Current Declined List Of Countries To Which Travel Insurance Coverage Is Not Extended
It depends on the package of your Travel Insurance. There are several types of packages such as worldwide, worldwide except America, Schengen countries, Asia, Asia excluding Japan and Korea, etc. The list of countries will be stated in which the insurance will cover the loss and also the countries which will not get covered under any loss.
Making A Claim When You Get Home
If you need to make a claim on your travel insurance policy when you get home, check the following things before you send off your claim:
- you’re within the time limits for making a claim
- you’re covered for what you’re claiming for
- how much the excess is. The excess is the amount of money that your insurer will take off the claim. It may not be worth making a claim if the amount you’re claiming for is less than this
- the small print. Make sure there’s nothing in the terms and conditions that prevents you from claiming
- whether it’s a new for old policy. If it isn’t, the amount you get for items you’re claiming for will be less than the cost of replacing them. This is because the insurer takes off money for wear and tear.
Contact your insurer as soon as possible and ask them to send you a claim form. They may be able to email this to you to speed things up. Complete the claim form carefully and keep a copy for yourself.
You’ll need to include copies of all paperwork that will help your claim, including receipts or medical certificates. You should also keep copies of the originals in case your claim is queried or refused.
Your insurer may ask if you have other insurance that may cover the claim. You’ll need to let them know if you have other insurance that may also offer cover, for example, home contents insurance.

What Might Be Excluded
Routine pregnancy-related treatments and normal births, however, are typically not covered by a travel insurance policy.
Policies also tend to cap cover before the typical full 40-week term. Many only provide cover up to 38 weeks, for example. And if you are expecting twins, which increases chances of giving birth prematurely, it could be lower at 32 weeks.
Every travel insurance policy is different so be certain to read the small print to ensure that it meets your circumstances and requirements.
As ever, though, if you travel against medical advice, your policy will become invalid.

Decide How Long You’re Going For
Travel insurers usually quote based on how many days you’ll be away.
- If youre just planning a quick trip, you may want a one-off travel insurance policy. These are for a set number of days.
- If you travel often, or for extended periods, consider an annual multi-trip policy. It may end up being more convenient and better value.
- If you’re going overseas long-term to live or work, you may not be covered by some policies. You may need to get domestic health and property insurance in your destination. Ask your insurer.
Annual multi-trip policies and credit card travel insurance policies can restrict the length of each trip you take. This could be anywhere from 15 to 365 days, depending on fine print in your policy. Some allow you to pay for extra days.
Travelling Abroad To Seek Medical Care And Alternative Therapies
More Canadians are travelling abroad for health care and treatment, ranging from therapeutic baths to cosmetic surgery to organ transplants. No matter the reason, if youre a medical tourist you should understand that health systems outside Canada may operate very differently from what youre accustomed to and may not be subject to the same rules and regulations. For instance, therapies considered natural are not necessarily safe; mineral and holy waters may also be sources of infectious diseases. Hospital and health care services may not meet Canadian standards.
Its your responsibility to research the standards of the health care facility and the licensing of the health care provider in your destination country. Find out how the medical services and facilities are accredited and how they are regulated. Verify the licensing of the facility or health care professional and review any complaints, comments, reports and evaluations. Even if you research the facility and staff thoroughly, theres no guarantee that your experience will match your expectations.
Before making a commitment to undergo medical treatment outside Canada, consult your health care provider or a travel health clinic. In addition to discussing your travel health-related risks, your health care provider will know your history and the procedure youre travelling to obtain and can advise you accordingly.
Be aware of potential problems and risks. For instance:
