How To File A Travel Insurance Claim

Is Travel Insurance Worth The Cost? | NBC Nightly News

You have to file the claim with your travel insurance company as soon as possible. For this, you need all the supporting documents you can get, if you want the company to actually consider your claim legitimate and cover it. Examples include:

  • If you need medical assistance. If you get into an accident or become ill during your trip abroad, you have to save the medical bills, doctor notes, and any other documents that prove you require medical assistance. Once you submit your claim, the insurance company will reimburse the costs of your treatment. In countries like the US, if you have travel health insurance with a reputable health insurance company, the hospital may be able to bill the costs directly to the insurance company.
  • Stolen possessions or a car accident. If your personal belongings are stolen or you get into a car accident while you are on your trip, you have to contact your travel insurance provider as soon as possible to learn how to proceed. You must also file a police report, and save the proof for when you make the insurance claim.
  • Trip cancellation. If you have to cancel your trip, you must give a reason for it to the insurance company. For example, if the reason was work-related, include a letter from your employer. If the reason was health-related, include a doctors note, etc.

Card Benefit Services

You get Mastercard travel insurance just by having a Mastercard. It’s free, too. There are six different types of Mastercard travel insurance available: travel accident insurance, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, trip delay insurance, insurance for lost or delayed baggage, and rental car insurance.

Coverage amounts and categories differ based on what level of Mastercard you have: regular, World or World Elite. Plus, it’s up to the card’s issuer whether or not to include each benefit in the first place. Below you’ll find descriptions of the insurance offerings and the dollar amounts of the coverage if they don’t differ by card. Coverage amounts that change based on the Mastercard tier are noted in the last few bullets.

Here’s how Mastercard travel insurance works:

Each of these benefits comes with a laundry list of restricted situations. So be sure to read your card’s benefits guide in detail to confirm you know what’s covered and what’s not.

Force Majeure Cover After Departure:

Incidents that occur during your holiday and are beyond your control will be covered if you have force majeure cover on your travel insurance policy.

Cover levels will differ between policies, but here is an example of what you may be entitled to if your trip is disrupted. If the area you are staying in is affected by force majeure you may claim up to £2,000* for additional travel expenses needed for you to return home or move to a safer area. You may also claim up to £200* for additional accommodation and £100* for food. Some policies will also allow £150* for baby essentials or prescription medication if your return journey is details due to force majeure.

Although there may be cover available to curtail your trip, the force majeure section of the policy does not cover you to come home early if you no longer wish to remain in the country.

It is worth noting, if you have booked your trip as part of a package holiday it is the travel agents or tour operators responsibility to find you alternative accommodation to allow you to continue with your holiday if your area is no longer safe. In the event that flights back to the UK are disrupted, your tour operator would be responsible for any additional accommodation expenses, and for the cost of getting you home once flights resumed.

*Prices are an estimate and you should check the cover available under your own travel insurance policy.

Read The Fine Print Carefully

It is very important that you read the fine print before you actually buy the policy. There can be a lot of confusing or misleading claims, which make you think you have more coverage than you actually do.

Likewise, you may not know youre entitled to make a claim unless you carefully read the fine print, tiresome as it may be.

Travel Insurance And Volcanoes

There are several reasons why Hollywood loves a volcano they are big, loud, spectacularly scary and also very deadly, making them perfect for a starring role in an action movie. Unfortunately, it is for these same reasons that an erupting volcano can be a pretty dangerous beast.

On the other hand, volcanoes are easy to spot and their temper tantrums are fairly easy to predict. That said, their eruptions still manage to catch people off guard now and again, and even a dormant volcano can pose some serious hazards of its own . If you are planning on entering one of Planet Earths volcanic danger zones anytime soon, you’ll need to take note of the current travel warnings and get yourself insured early. As well, you’ll need to make sure that your insurance covers injury, travel cancellation or loss of property dont just assume it does!

You Purchased Travel Insurance When A Big Storm Was Already On The Horizon

Kelly and Gus have been looking forward to their 10th anniversary trip to St. Barts for months. A few days before they’re supposed to leave, the Weather Channel reports that Tropical Storm Teresa is churning toward the island. “Uh-oh,” Kelly thinks. “Id better get travel insurance.” They end up cancelling their vacation because of the storm but their insurance claim is denied.

Allianz Global Assistance names several covered reasons for canceling a trip that can be related to severe weather. For instance:

  • Your travel carrier cannot get you to your original itinerarys destination for at least 24 consecutive hours from the originally scheduled arrival time due to severe weather
  • Your tour operator cancels your multi-day tour that was purchased prior to your departure date due to severe weather
  • Your destination is uninhabitable

  • If you are traveling while pregnant, travel insurance companies will usually not cover any expenses related to the pregnancy, such as giving birth, general check-ups, or morning sickness. There are some plans which offer travel insurance for complications of pregnancy.
  • Medical treatment as a result of drug or alcohol consumption.
  • Medical treatment as a result of reckless behavior and/or engaging in dangerous sports activities.
  • Travel insurance for cancellation during an ongoing event .

Travel Insurance And Avalanches

We all know the old adage you can’t have too much of a good thing. Unfortunately, you certainly can have too much snow! A sprinkling of snow falling on pristine landscape? Beautiful. A nice deep covering of snow on the mountain side ? Perfect for skiing and boarding! Tonnes of the white stuff plunging towards you down a mountainside? Not so good!

If youre serious about skiing and snowboarding, you need to be aware of the dangers of avalanches. These marauding torrents of snow, ice and assorted mountainside debris might look spectacular from far away, but when youre in the firing line of an avalanche, it ain’t that pretty.

Getting caught in an avalanche can mean broken bones and belongings- and that’s if you’re lucky. When you’re at risk of an avalanche, taking out comprehensive ski insurance is vital.

  • Foreign hospitals can be very expensive and may require immediate cash payment
  • In some countries hospitals and clinics will not treat you if you do not have enough insurance or money to pay your bills

Does Travel Insurance Cover Hurricanes

It’s getting windy! In most cases travel insurance does cover you for natural disasters. The following are some of the typical events you can claim for.

  • Cancellations before you leave: Non-refundable hotels, extra trips or added extra costs to your holiday that you cannot recoup can be claimed for. As well, you have provision to claim any extra expenses if you are forced to cancel your holiday before you have left.
  • Cancellations when already abroad: You will also have provision to claim if you are forced to cancel your holiday once you are already abroad. Provided you are within the designated disaster area, you can claim for the funds required to find alternative accommodation in a safe area.
  • Medical costs: Medical costs should always be covered, even on the most basic of insurance plans. Any injuries you incur as a direct result of the hurricane will be covered, provided you have not invalidated your insurance policy. Emergency medical evacuation will usually also be covered.
