Does Health Insurance Cover Online Therapy

The Value of Health Coverage through Covered California

Steven Gans, MD is board-certified in psychiatry and is an active supervisor, teacher, and mentor at Massachusetts General Hospital.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to telehealth and teletherapy services became more important than ever. While stay-at-home orders were in place, many therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists transitioned from in-person office settings to online therapy. Insurance providers had to move quickly to authorize payments.

Virtual visits may be here to stay. They offer more flexibility and in many cases, better accessibility than in-person appointments. However, figuring out how to pay for online therapy can be confusing and stressful. Learn where to start to figure out if itâs covered by health insurance, as well as where to look for a few low-cost options.

Parity Protections For Mental Health Services

This generally means limits applied to mental health and substance abuse services cant be more restrictive than limits applied to medical and surgical services. The limits covered by parity protections include:

  • Financial like deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket limits
  • Treatment like limits to the number of days or visits covered
  • Care management like being required to get authorization of treatment before getting it

What Are The Costs

The cost of life insurance without a medical exam varies according to your age, the amount of coverage you want, whether you choose a term or permanent policy and your answers to the medical questionnaire .

For example, a simplified issue policy with a 20-year term and $100,000 coverage from Haven Life can cost around $10 a month for a 31-year-old woman who doesnt smoke and is in excellent health. The same woman might pay $20 or more for a policy of the same term length and coverage if she is a smoker and has high blood pressure.

The provider you choose also impacts your monthly premium. Following the above-mentioned Haven Life example, the 31-year-old woman who doesnt smoke and is in excellent health would pay around $18 for a 20-year term policy with Bestow Life.

Bear in mind that, because premiums tend to be higher than for regular life insurance, no-exam life insurance may not be the best choice if you qualify for standard policies.

No-exam life insurance might not be worth it if:

Youre young and healthy: Applicants under 45 and in good health usually get better rates with traditional policies.

You need a high coverage limit: The coverage limit for no-exam policies is usually around $500,000, and guaranteed issue policies may offer no more than $25,000.

No-exam life insurance may be worth it if:

Youre a smoker or have a critical illness: These applicants might be denied coverage by many traditional life insurance providers.

Walmart Enters Health Insurance Industry

Whats mental health parity?

Walmart is the latest major retailer to set foot in the health insurance industry.

The retail giant plans to sell health insurance policies directly to consumers, according to a report by HR Dive. Walmart is currently hiring Medicare insurance agents to help get the new venture off the ground. Walmart did not immediately return a request for comment.

You will be responsible for helping the Medicare community in a meaningful way, by enrolling customers in Medicare products and services over the phone, the Walmart job posting says.

This is the latest venture in Walmarts efforts to enter the healthcare industry last year, Walmart announced it was opening its first health clinic in Georgia, where consumers would have access to dental, mental health counseling, X-rays and audiology services under one roof. Walmart plans to open more of these locations in Georgia and Arkansas.

Walmart also continues to offer a list of generic medications at about $4, including birth control, diabetes and some mental health medications. Patients have responded favorably to our low, transparent pricing for key healthcare services, regardless of insurance status, a Walmart corporate announcement said. Theyre also appreciative of the convenience of our facilities.

Our Take: Walmart To Acquire On

WalmartannouncedThursday that it has entered into an agreement for Walmart Health to acquire MeMD, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based multi-specialty telehealth provider.

The retail goliath said the MeMD acquisition would allow Walmart Health to provide access to virtual care across the nation, complementing the companys in-person Walmart Health centers.

The first Walmart Health center opened in Georgia in September 2019, offering primary and urgent care, lab testing, X-ray and diagnostic services, counseling, and dental, optical and hearing services. By last September, there were six centers, five in Georgia and one in Arkansas, and Walmart said it intended to open seven more in Georgia and two in Chicago by the end of its fiscal year. This year, Walmart Health is expanding its brick-and-mortar centers into several cities in Florida.

According to MeMDs website, the business delivers virtual medical and mental health visits to 5 million members nationwide. Services include urgent care, mens and womens health, talk therapy, teen therapy, and psychiatry.

MeMD was founded in 2010 by Dr. John Shufeldt, an emergency medicine physician who founded the NextCare chain of urgent care clinics in 1993 and served as CEO until 2010. He also briefly served as CEO of Doctors Express, a chain of urgent care centers that was sold to American Family Care in 2013.

Three main types of life insurance policies dont require a medical exam: simplified issue, guaranteed issue and accelerated underwriting.

    • Biological familys health conditions
    • Recent hospitalizations
    • Drug usage
    • High-risk hobbies

Most simplified issue policies have maximum coverage of no more than $100,000. The exact coverage amount and monthly premium depend on how the applicant answers the questionnaire, as well as on their age and gender and in the case of term coverage the desired term length.

    Guaranteed issue life insurance

Guaranteed issue life insurance not only skips medical exams but omits questionnaires as well. As the name implies, approval is all but guaranteed as long as you meet the insurers age requirements this is usually between 50 and 80 years old, although some providers raise that limit to 85.

This type of life insurance plan is a good option for those who may be ineligible for standard life insurance policies due to advanced age or serious health issues. However, terminally ill applicants may be denied even a guaranteed issue policy by some insurers.

Guaranteed issue policies have the lowest coverage limits of all life insurance options, with most capping the death benefit at around $25,000.

Walmart Is Rapidly Expanding Its Presence In Healthcare

Retail giant Walmart is a force to reckon with, based not only on its expansive market reach, but also given its commitment to innovation in the consumer services space.

Walmarts recent ventures in healthcare is one such example of innovation, as the company is attempting to become a staple in the multibillion dollar healthcare services industry.

In 2019, Walmart unveiled its first health center, offering a variety of services including primary care, labs, X-ray and EKG, counseling, dental, optical, hearing, community health and health insurance education and enrollment all in one facility, conveniently located outside the store with a separate entrance for customers. The clinic will provide low, transparent pricing for key health services for local families, regardless of insurance status. Since then, the company has continued to expand the service across multiple locations, with the goal of partnering with several on-the-ground health providers to be a first-of-its-kind health center to deliver primary and urgent care, labs, x-ray and diagnostics, counseling, dental, optical and hearing services all in one facility.

Have you ever been in Walmart and had an urge to spill out all your pent-up thoughts and desires, a.k.a. the real reason for your shopping trip? If so, Walmart is in the process of making it possible!

According to CNBC, the worlds biggest retailer is diving deeper into the primary care and mental health market with plans to open a new clinic called Walmart Health.

Honestly, this really shouldnt come as shock since Walmart has positioned itself as one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the United States even going as far as to lease out space in Texas stores to a third-party behavioral health company in 2018. The retailer may also be continuing to try to get in the public’s good graces after first discontinuing all sales of handgun ammunition and short-barrel rifle ammunition.

While the concept is still being tested, the new clinic, offering comprehensive and low-cost primary care, will open to the public next month in Dallas, GA, with hopes to expand to other locations in the future.

Starting Sept. 13, patients will be able to set up appointments to see on-site health providers and nurses for a list of services including primary care, dental, counseling, labs, vision and hearing tests, immunizations, X-rays, and more using the Walmart Health website.

According to Walmart Healths website, walk-ins are available and they accept most major insurance providers. But if you’re without insurance, Care Clinic services will typically range from $59 – $99 per visit.
