Walmart is launching health plans through a new brokerage that will be available for the first time for seniors signing up this fall for Medicare medical and drug benefits in 2021.

The move announced Tuesday by Walmart comes at a time of intense competition in the health insurance industry for the booming population of seniors eligible for Medicare benefits. Already, myriad big health insurers are expanding into hundreds of new counties to sell both private Medicare Advantage health coverage and Medicare part D drug benefits.

In Walmarts case, the retailer is launching Walmart Insurance Services, which is a licensed insurance brokerage the retailer says will assist people with enrolling in insurance plansand simplify whats historically been a cumbersome, confusing process. Walmart Insurance Services will be working with several existing national and regional health insurance carriers including Humana, UnitedHealth Groups UnitedHealthcare health insurance unit and Centenes Wellcare Health Plans.

Walmart Insurance Services will begin selling these Medicare medical and drug benefit plans during this years annual enrollment period, which runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

Takeaways From The Walmart Insurance Services Launch

  • Startups could suffer: Walmarts plans could hurt insurance startups like Bright Health and Devoted Health, notes a Business Insider report. While these smaller tech-focused insurers tout their greater efficiency and ability to offer affordable care, they may find tough sledding to compete with Walmarts ability to consolidate many types of care into one visit.
  • Expect expansion: Walmart expects to add more payers to the list of insurance products it offers customers as it further expands health care services. The company can be expected to develop more of a national presence in the health insurance market going forward.
  • Consumer bonds will be strengthened: By offering health insurance plans, Walmart is also providing greater convenience and expanding its health care offerings to consumers, which may drive even greater loyalty and satisfaction. With more than 5,000 locations in the U.S. along with plans to operate 22 more Walmart Health centers by the end of 2021, the company has the infrastructure and reach to become a much larger force in the field.
  • Policy Costs Details And Company Benefits

The most important factor to consider is whether the insurer offers affordable policies that fit your needs.

The price of a health insurance policy can vary widely by insurer. This is typically because some providers offer additional benefits with their policies, such as online member portals or gym memberships.

Additionally, some policies have a wider provider network, which means your health insurance would be accepted by more doctors and medical facilities. However, policies with a bigger network or those that offer you the ability to see any doctor that you want will almost always come with higher monthly premiums.

Finally, besides the monthly premium, you should carefully review the deductibles and copays or coinsurance before choosing a policy. These values can vary greatly not only by policy but also by insurer. By selecting the plan with a deductible and coinsurance that fit your needs, you can save yourself money.

Obamacare Changes The Calculus On Getting Coverage At Work

There are obvious benefits to getting health insurance at work. For one, employer-sponsored insurance is not taxed, meaning that every dollar of compensation provided as medical coverage stretches further. Individual market plans, meanwhile, are purchased with post-tax dollars. The only way to get in on the tax exemption is to buy coverage at work.

But for low-wage workers, Obamacare has introduced a new and big drawback to the employer insurance. Namely, anybody who gets access to affordable coverage at work is barred from getting subsidies through the new exchanges. This is even true for people who don’t buy insurance at work just the act of getting offered employer coverage blocks individuals from getting financial help.

That financial help can be a big deal for those with lower incomes. Think of the 36-year-old Walmart employee here in Washington, D.C. who works 29 hours per week at the company’s average wage of $12.73 per hour. She earns just about $19,000 annually if she works every week of the year.

If Walmart doesn’t offer her insurance, the Kaiser Family Foundation’s subsidy calculator shows that she qualifies for a $1,751 subsidy from the federal government to help buy coverage on the exchange. With that financial help, she can buy insurance for as little as an $7 per month. As a low-wage worker, she gets some of the most generous financial help.

This is how Trader Joes’ explained its decision to similarly cut benefits for part-time workers last year.

    Are The Rates Competitive

Does Walmart Offer Health Insurance / Surprise! Walmart ...

Because of the number of companies and plans involved, we are unable to offer a rate comparison. In fact, Walmart Insurance Services just provide an opportunity to compare insurance plan options both by rate and coverage. Walmart is not a health insurance business, and they are not involved in the sale of insurance instead, they just help people find a provider, or help them select the most affordable option based on their needs.

Although Walmart is known for their affordable prices, Walmart Insurance Services does not actually offer any additional benefits or discounts once youve selected a provider.
