Motor Vehicle Owners Responsibilities

How Does Insurance Work?

Missouri law requires that all motor vehicle owners maintain some type of motor vehicle liability insurance coverage. Missouri residents are required to show proof of insurance when registering a motor vehicle or renewing their license plates. All motor vehicle owners must also keep proof of insurance in their vehicle. If a law enforcement officer asks for proof of insurance and the driver cannot show it, the officer may issue both the driver and the owner a ticket.

At any time during the period of vehicle registration in Missouri, the Driver License Bureau may request that a vehicle owner show proof of insurance. If the vehicle owner cannot provide proof of insurance, a driver license suspension is imposed.

Is Variable Universal Life Insurance A Good Investment

Variable universal life insurance is a good investment if youve already maxed out your retirement accounts and still have excess cash youd like to shelter from taxes. Otherwise, you may be better off investing in simpler, less expensive life insurance products, such as term or whole life, and invest the difference into an index fund through a brokerage.

Variable universal life insurance is more expensive than term or whole life insurance. Besides the policy fees, there are management fees and commissions associated with the investments you choose.

How Does Underinsured Motorist Coverage Work

State laws require vehicle owners to carry a minimum amount of car insurance or otherwise be able to show financial responsibility in case of an accident. And because car insurance coverage can be expensive, many drivers buy just enough insurance to comply with their state’s law. This means if your car accident was caused by an underinsured driver, there might not be enough insurance to cover the full amount of your damages. This is where underinsured motorist coverage comes in:

  • Your own underinsured motorist insurance provides protection when the at-fault driver doesnt have enough insurance to cover your injuries, lost income, pain and suffering, and other losses.
  • Underinsured coverage requires you to make two claims: one against the other driver and one against your own insurance company.
  • UIM is an add-on to most car insurance policiesbut is required by law in some states.
  • There are different types of underinsured motorist insurance most UIM covers bodily injuries other variations cover property damage.
  • If you own more than one car, you may be able to stack your underinsured motorist coverage and claim a higher amount if you are hit by an underinsured driver.

How Does Whole Life Insurance Work

Unlike term, whole life insurance is a permanent form of insurance, allowing fixed death benefit coverage over the policyholder’s life. The life insurance premiums for whole life insurance are higher than what you pay for a term life policy. Whole life contains a cash-value account, which can accumulate as interest accrues on a fixed rate and a tax-deferred basis.

You can borrow against your whole life policy, but the benefit acts as the collateral, so your benefit shrinks if you don’t pay it back. If you don’t pay the premiums or the loan back, your policy will be canceled. Any money you borrowed may be considered income and subject to taxation.

How Much Does Umbrella Insurance Cost

The cost of an umbrella liability policy depends on how much coverage you purchase, the state where you live and the risk that insuring you presents to the insurance company. The more homes or cars you own, and the more household members your policy will cover, the more it will cost.

But umbrella insurance is quite cheap compared to other types of insurance, especially considering how much coverage it provides. The Insurance Information Institute says most $1 million policies cost $150 to $300 per year. You can expect to pay about $75 more per year for $2 million in coverage, and another $50 per year for every extra $1 million in coverage beyond that. Most insurance companies umbrella liability policies start at $1 million in coverage, with higher limits available.

Why is umbrella insurance so cheap? Its partly because you have to carry plenty of homeowner’s and auto insurance before an insurance company will issue you an umbrella policy. Youll probably have to carry the maximum liability coverage available under your homeowner’s and auto policies before you can purchase an umbrella policy.

If you dont already have this much coverage, your homeowner’s and auto insurance premiums will go up, making the umbrella policy more expensive than it might seem at first glance.

  • 50 The maximum amount your insurance company will pay for bodily injury claims in a whole accident is the second number in your liability coverage. This does not overlap the per-person limit of your liability coverage. In this case, 50 represents $50,000 in coverage.
  • 25 The maximum amount your insurance coverage will pay for property damage claims in the event of an at-fault accident is determined by the third number, which is typically 100. In this case, 25 represents $25,000 in coverage.

Auto Insurance For Young Drivers

You have two options for covering your young drivers. You can add them to your policy, or you can buy a separate policy for them. Adding them to your policy is usually cheaper.

Some companies require you to put everyone who lives with you and is of driving age on your policy. Tell your company when someone in your family starts to drive or turns 16. If you dont tell the company, and the company learns about them later, the company will bill you for the extra premium you should have paid. The company also might deny any claims you have or choose to not renew your policy.

If a teenager is the main driver of a car, the company will base the premium on that car. Otherwise, the company will base the teens premium on the car in the family with the highest rate.

Does My Personal Car Insurance Work With Turo

The effect of the minimum wage on jobs across the wage distribution ...

Standard car insurance policies for personal use that is, for everyday driving to work and other errands will probably never cover your vehicle while someone else is renting your car on Turo. Those policies are designed and priced to cover a private driver, not a car driven by a new stranger every weekend. So you can’t just reject Turo’s coverage and rely on your own personal policy.

Despite the fact that your personal policy won’t cover you while your car is rented, you will still have to buy your own car insurance policy. Nearly every state requires car insurance to register and drive a private vehicle, and Turo requires you to have your own coverage, as well. However, you don’t need to buy any special coverage from your regular insurer.

However, your car insurance company can prohibit you from renting your car on Turo in most states. In California, Oregon and Washington, insurers cannot cancel or decline to renew policies for car sharing.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any evidence of any Turo-friendly car insurers. Progressive, Geico and State Farm agents all told us they will not insure vehicles for car sharing services, such as Turo. Even Liberty Mutual, which provides Turo’s own corporate policy, doesn’t allow sharing on personal insurance but can on some business policies.

Settling A Claim If You Have A Car Loan

If you have a car loan, your car insurance policy will usually include a loss payee clause. A loss payee clause makes your lender your beneficiary. In case of loss or damage to your car, your insurance company will pay your lender up to the remaining balance of your car loan when you make a claim.

When you make a claim, your insurance company may, at its discretion, give the money to either:

  • you, so you can fix your car when you submit a claim
  • your lender, who would then give you the money for repairs after you submit receipts proving they were done

Exceptions To State Minimum Car Insurance Requirements

Not all states require drivers to have insurance. New Hampshire famously doesnt mandate insurance for most of its drivers only those who have been convicted of certain vehicle-related crimes, such as drunken driving, have to carry it. Other states provide alternatives, including:

  • Proof of financial responsibility: Some states, like Arizona, allow drivers to provide a bond, certificate of deposit or cash to the department of motor vehicles in place of the state minimum car insurance. The payment amount varies widely from state to state and can be as little as $30,000 or more than $100,000.

  • Uninsured motorist registration: In places such as Virginia, residents with clean records have the option to register as uninsured motorists for an annual fee. To be clear, this doesn’t replace car insurance. It simply lets drivers operate a vehicle without coverage. And although this option costs less than auto insurance, it leaves drivers with no coverage whatsoever in an accident.

For most drivers, its simply easier to meet the state minimum car insurance requirements than to deal with alternative insurance and its certainly less risky.

What Are The Minimum State Standards For Insurance

The minimum state standards for insurance are as follows:

  • Bodily injury liability : Helps cover the medical expenses related to the other drivers injuries. It also covers the legal fees, in case of the other driver suing you for their losses.
  • Property Damage liability: Pays for the property damage caused to the others. For example, if you hit a car in an accident the property damage coverage will pay for the vehicle repairs of the other driver.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage: This type of coverage provides financial protection, if the at-fault driver is uninsured or does not have enough coverage to pay for your losses
  • Personal injury protection : A requirement in states with no-fault laws. It will cover the medical expenses, wage loss or repair costs irrespective of who caused the accident
  • Medical payments coverage: Considered optional coverage in most states. It can be used in non-PIP states. It mostly covers medical expenses after an accident but is considered less effective than PIP.
