Are Trips Affected By Covid
If you have a trip booked to an area affected by COVID-19, you may wonder whether you can cancel your trip and file a claim for reimbursement. The answer and specifics will vary based on the card you used and the details of why you want to cancel. But in general, you wont be able to get a refund from trip cancellation and interruption insurance if your reason is primarily related to:
- Youre no longer willing to take your trip.
- Your destination has reported incidents or confirmed cases of COVID-19.
- Theres a CDC travel warning for your destination.
- Your destination wont offer you entry or would require testing, vaccination or quarantine for entry.
- The flight to or from your destination is canceled due to COVID-19.
However, some cards may offer coverage in specific cases. For example, Amex may provide coverage if the reason for your trip cancellation is that you contract COVID-19 or are quarantined by a physician for health reasons related to COVID-19 before departing for your trip.
Of course, many airlines now offer free changes or cancellations. And you may be able to work with other travel suppliers to change or cancel your arrangements. So, you may be able to be refunded or otherwise accommodated even if your reasons for cancellation or interruption arent eligible for reimbursement by your insurance.
How Much Does Cancel For Any Reason Coverage Cost

If The Trip Is Canceled Can I Get My Premium Back
Most travel insurance policies cover trip cancellation from the time of purchase to the day of departure for reasons like sickness or severe weather. They typically include a free look period after purchase, usually 10 to 15 days, during which time travelers can cancel for a full refund of the premium. After that, no dice.
When Royal Caribbean canceled Valerie Pedersens May cruise to Bermuda because of the pandemic, she was offered a refund. But Ms. Pedersen also wanted her $400 insurance premium back from Travel Guard insuring a trip that wasnt to be.
Travel Guard offered Ms. Pedersen a rollover.
On April 13, the company wrote her that she was beyond the free-look stage that would trigger a refund of the premium. It is our policy that all premium refund requests must be submitted within 15 days of the effective date of the policy, however, we are pleased to offer you a travel insurance credit voucher in the amount of $413.92, it wrote.
Pretty cheesy, I think, as I could use the actual cash now, Ms. Pedersen said.
Offering rollovers has been the industrys exception to its policy of no refunds after the free-look period. Decisions on how to handle policy refunds versus rollovers have varied in the pandemic. Allianz said it is allowing customers whose trips have been canceled because of Covid-19 by their travel operator be it a cruise line, airline or tour company to cancel their insurance and get a refund of the premium.
What To Know Before You Buy Travel Insurance
Check your primary health-insurance policy first. Most domestic policies offer some coverage for international emergencies, for things like broken bones, appendicitis, and illnesses and accidents that require immediate medical attention. But it may not be enough to cover your entire bill or to get you home. If you were to go on a trip and contract COVID-19 or be quarantined, some domestic policies would consider that a medical emergency and cover a percentage of the cost of your care and the logistical expenses of being quarantined. But policies vary, and its imperative to talk to an agent at your insurance company to see whats covered before traveling. Depending on the state in which you reside, Blue Cross Blue Shield offers international protection through GeoBlue, a supplemental policy that provides up to $1 million in medical and up to $500,000 in evacuation costs for international travel. To be insured with GeoBlue, you dont have to have domestic Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage, but you do have to provide proof that you have a primary health-insurance policy.

What To Do If You Booked A Trip And Have Insurance But Your Policy Doesnt Include Cfar Clause
If you purchased a comprehensive travel insurance plan for an upcoming trip but didnt add CFAR coverage, just be aware that your options for coronavirus-related cancellations are more limited. While CFAR is the only cancellation option to cover fear of travel due to the coronavirus pandemic, some comprehensive policies still offer coverage for other COVID-19-related concerns. This may include:
- Coverage for common concerns like cancellation due to diagnosed illness before traveling
- Emergency medical care from a doctor or hospital if you become ill while traveling
- Accommodation coverage if quarantined at your destination
Always be sure to review your policy carefully to understand the exclusions but note that, without CFAR coverage, canceling a trip simply because youre afraid of contracting COVID-19 will likely not result in a successful claim under standard, comprehensive travel insurance plans.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost
Travel insurance cost is primarily based on the price of the trip and the age of the traveler. A 35-year-old might expect a policy to add 3% to 5% to the cost of a trip while a 60-year-old might pay around 10%, says Jonathan Harty, owner of a MA-based travel agency. It can be a small price to pay to safeguard your investment in a honeymoon or the trip of a lifetime.

Isnt Bank Card Insurance Enough
Usually, only high-end bank cards include trip cancellation insurance. With Visa Premier and Gold MasterCard for instance, you are covered in case of illness preventing you from travelling, death of a family member, damage in your home or redundancy. In all other circumstances, cancellation insurance isnt valid. Bank card insurance isnt always enough and depending on the card you hold, cancellation insurance may be non-existent.
Accidental Death And Flight Accident Coverage
If an accident results in death, disability, or serious injury to the traveler or a family member accompanying the traveler, an accidental death and flight accident policy pays benefits to surviving beneficiaries. Flight accident insurance provides coverage for accidents and deaths occurring during flights on a licensed commercial airliner. General exclusions will apply, such as death caused by drug overdose, death resulting from sickness, et al.
Accidental death coverage may not be necessary if you already have a life insurance policy. However, benefits paid by your travel insurance coverage may be in addition to those paid by your life insurance policy, thus leaving more money to your beneficiaries.
