Why You Should Buy Travel Health Insurance
- Your Canadian health insurance;may not pay your medical fees while you are outside Canada
- Your provincial or territorial health plan may cover none, or only a small part, of the costs of your medical care abroad. It will never pay your bills up front
- Foreign hospitals can be very expensive and may require immediate cash payment
- In some countries hospitals and clinics will not treat you if you do not have enough insurance or money to pay your bills
- The Government of Canada will not pay your medical bills

When Are Credit Card Travel Protections Enough
Suppose you dont fall into any of the categories above and use a such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve when making travel purchases. In that case, you may determine that credit card protections are enough for some of your trips. However, I only recommend relying on credit card protections if you also have medical insurance that provides adequate coverage at your destination.
Below is a collection of reasons why you may be able to rely on credit card protections instead of purchasing independent travel insurance. Note that this is not an exhaustive list, and you dont need all of them to apply in order to forgo travel insurance. However, if some of these reasons apply to your trip, you may want to rely on credit card protections:
- You have personal health insurance that will cover you on your trip, even if treatment is out of network .
- You have a premium travel rewards credit card that provides travel protections, and you use this card to book your travels.
- You have a premium credit card that provides medical evacuation protection on your trip.
- You book refundable travel, including award flights and/or nights that can be canceled free of charge.
Do All Credit Cards Offer Travel Insurance
First, its important to establish what is meant by travel insurance.
If you mean getting a refund if the trip is cancelled or goes wrong, then yes. Credit card providers are bound by strict consumer laws set out in Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, which covers purchases of £100 to £30,000.
But credit card providers do not offer full travel insurance, as they do not pay out for medical issues that may arise during a trip overseas.
They will also not pay out in the event of lost luggage and do not include other features that are common in travel insurance policies, such as personal liability.
Some providers offer travel accident insurance sometimes for free but this is not as comprehensive as full medical cover offered through standalone travel insurance policies.
Accident insurance covers accidental death or an accident resulting in permanent injury such as loss of limb or sight. But hospital treatment for less serious conditions is not covered.;
There is one card that offers comprehensive travel insurance, including medical cover. This the Platinum card from American Express, which comes with a fee of £575 a year.
But this is a charge card, not a credit card. The difference is that, unlike with a credit card, the customer has to pay the entire balance each month.

Emergency Travel And Assistance
An additional perk of some credit card travel insurance plans is assistance if you run into an emergency or legal issue on your trip. The plan administrator is usually available to refer you to medical, emergency or legal services in the country youve traveled to.
You will either be reimbursed for expenses incurred through these referrals or youll need to pay for them on your own, depending on the plan.
Best Credit Cards For Travel Insurance 2021
Modified date: Aug. 23, 2021
Typically when you book a trip, youre not thinking of losing baggage, losing your vision, or losing your life .
But sadly, this stuff happens.
So why do we seem to ignore travel insurance when we book that dream vacation? The same kinds of accidents can happen when youre traveling that can when youre homeand its best to be covered.
More and more credit card issuers are removing their unique travel insurance benefits and replacing them with travel rewards perks, such as miles and points.
While you will be able to find some basic coverage on other credit cards, we felt that these cards were the best of the bunch when it comes to added, unique travel insurance benefits.
Does My Credit Card Have Travel Insurance
Some credit cards do provide some travel insurance benefits. To find out whether your credit card provides any trip protection, contact the card company directly or check your credit card policy documents. Details regarding any potential refunds in the event of a canceled trip or other benefits, like baggage protection, should be stated in the benefits guide.
What Is Travel Insurance
In short, travel insurance is an optional purchase that may offer benefits when things dont go as planned on an upcoming trip. You pay a relatively small premium , and in exchange, youll have an insurance policy that may provide reimbursement or coverage for unexpected issues that come up while traveling.
There are many different types of protections that fall under the term travel insurance, and standard, comprehensive insurance policies typically include broad coverage across a range of potential issues such as trip interruption, baggage, medical, dental, emergency evacuation and accidental death benefits .
However, there are policies that offer narrower coverage. For example, its possible to purchase travel insurance that only provides medical protection for international travel . Likewise, you can also purchase policies that allow you to select the protection you need such as the build-your-own option with American Express Travel Insurance).
Ive previously compared the best travel insurance policies and providers. So, check out that guide to find the provider and policy that fits your needs best. You can also check a travel insurance aggregator such as InsureMyTrip to compare different policies quickly. What They Call Travel
One common trend with credit card travel insurance is that they wont cover you if you travel without a plan to return home. Their definition of travel usually relies on you having booked your flights there and your flights home.
Always check if your credit card has a different definition of travel to you itll save you a lot of confusion if that disparity costs you coverage.
Chase Sapphire Preferred: Best Travel Protections With A Low Annual Fee
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is only a slight step down from the Chase Sapphire Reserve it includes most of the same travel insurance protections, just not to the same extent. But the annual fee on this card is significantly lower at just $95 per year.
Sapphire Preferred card holders get the same trip interruption and cancellation coverage as the Sapphire Reserve up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip if your trip is halted or canceled for a covered reason. Youll be reimbursed for any prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses, such as airfare, tours and hotels. This will even cover you if youre sick just make sure to get a doctors note.
Other travel protections are also comparable between the two cards, but the main difference is that to be eligible for trip delay insurance with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, your flight needs to be delayed at least 12 hours or require an overnight stay and theres no emergency evacuation coverage.
Additionally, the auto rental collision damage insurance on the Chase Sapphire Preferred is primary coverage but will only cover you for up to the actual cash value of the rental car. Conversely, the maximum on the Sapphire Reserve is $75,000, which could potentially cover damage beyond the car itself in the event of an accident.

The Best Credit Cards For Travel Insurance
Canadians are lucky to have publicly funded health care, but did you know if you travel outside of Canada that your provincial health plan doesnt follow you? The cost of medical attention can be quite high in some countries. Think hundreds of dollars for a quick trip to the doctor, or thousands if you need to visit the emergency room. Fortunately, as long as you have travel insurance, you wont have to pay anything out of pocket.
Usually when people speak about travel insurance theyre referring to travel medical, which covers you in situations where medical care is required abroad. However, other types of travel insurance you may need include travel accident, trip cancellation and interruption, delayed baggage, and lost baggage. It may seem excessive to have that much insurance when travelling, but trust us, youll be glad you have it if you ever need it.
The good news is that many premium credit cards offer a comprehensive travel insurance package as a standard benefit. To qualify for coverage, your account needs to be in good standing and a portion or the entire cost of the transportation ticket must be paid for using the credit card.
Heres a breakdown of the types of credit card travel insurance we cover in this post.
Best Credit Cards For Emergency Evacuation Insurance

Charging Your Travel Expenses To Your Credit Card
Hereâs the interesting about travel medical insurance. You donât need to charge any of your travel expenses to your credit card for your policy to apply. As long as youâre a cardholder, your travel medical policy would apply .
On the flip side of things, all of your other travel insurance such as trip cancellation or lost luggage usually requires you to charge 75% 100% of your trip expenses to your credit card for your policy to be valid.
For example, this is what the National Bank World Elite MasterCard shows for trip cancellation or interruption insurance.
âTrip cancellation or delay : In the event of a trip cancellation or delay before departure, the following expenses will be reimbursed, provided that a portion or the entire cost of the trip was charged to the account.â
That basically means you only need to charge a portion of your trip expenses to your card for the trip cancellation to be valid. However, if you look under the vehicle rental insurance, it states the following:
âEligible vehicle rental by the cardholder, paid for entirely with the card or rewards points earned with the card. Coverage applies anywhere in the world except locations where this coverage is prohibited under local law or rental agency policy.â
You really need to read the fine print to find out what the conditions are for your travel insurance to apply.

Should You Buy Travel Insurance Or Rely On Credit Cards
If youre shopping for travel insurance, dont forget that you may be able to get some of the coverage you need through credit cards. Even some no-annual-fee credit cards carry some combination of travel benefits. The annual fees of premium credit cards offering coverage might be offset if you can reduce a travel insurance purchase.
Still, travel insurance options frequently offer higher coverage limits than what youll find from a credit card. Travel insurance can also provide coverage for medical expenses, a crucial protection for any international traveler.
Also Consider: Bmo Eclipse Visa Infinite*
The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card is the first Visa card offered by BMO, and it doesnt disappoint, especially if you spend big on food and transit;
The earn rate is 5 BMO Rewards points per $1 spent on groceries, dining, gas, public transit, taxis and ride shares when using your card. Youll earn 1 BMO Rewards point per $1 spent on all other purchases. Its worth noting that 1 BMO point is worth $0.0071 when redeemed for travel. That means youre getting an effective earn rate of 3.5% back in points on dining, groceries, gas and transit spending, while all other purchases only earn you 0.7% back. BMO Rewards points are quite flexible, since you can book just about any type of travel through the BMO Rewards travel portal. Plus, every January, you receive a $50 lifestyle credit, which is a nice touch.

You Want To Be Able To Cancel For Any Reason
Suppose you are uncertain whether youll be able to take your trip, and youre worried that applicable credit card trip protections wont reimburse you if you make the decision to cancel or interrupt for a reason that isnt covered. In that case, you may want to purchase travel insurance with the optional cancel-for-any-reason benefit add on which may reimburse up to 75% of your insured trip costs.
My friend once purchased this type of insurance when he bought a flight to a country where he needed a visa but wasnt sure his visa application would be successful. After all, most trip cancellation and interruption benefits wont provide coverage if you dont meet the entry requirements for your destination. So, especially since its unclear when and how some countries will reopen to tourism, cancel for any reason policies can be helpful if you want to make nonrefundable travel plans.
Summary: The Pros And Cons Of Credit Card Travel Insurance
Should you purchase travel insurance for your next trip, or can your credit card give you enough protection? That depends on your travel plans. For a short domestic trip, your credit card may cover common mishaps like lost luggage and trip delays. But for long or international trips, you need robust third-party travel insurance. Thats because the biggest threat to your travel budget isn’t a misplaced suitcase; it’s the high cost of trip cancellations and medical emergencies.
Keep in mind that credit card plans and terms change often, so check your benefits with your card issuer before you travel. Consider the annual fee, too. The best credit cards for travel insurance are typically the top-tier cards, some of which charge $450-$550 per year in annual fees.8;Thats more than the cost of an entire year of protection with the AllTrips Prime plan.
Wherever your next trip may take you, don’t skimp on trip protection. Safe travels!
