There is a special registration process for babies born in Ontario birthing hospitals and for babies born at home attended by a registered midwife.

Immediately after the birth of your baby, hospital staff or a registered midwife will give you an Ontario Health Coverage Infant Registration form to complete. Babies born in an Ontario birthing hospital or at home and attended by a registered midwife will be provided with an infant registration form. Tourists, transients or visitors are not eligible for OHIP coverage.

This form requests information regarding your baby such as the babys name, birth date and mailing address. Information is also requested regarding the parent/guardian who is completing the form. You will be asked to confirm that :

  • The child has a primary place of residence in Ontario.
  • The child will be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days in any twelve-month period to retain health coverage.

The bottom of the form is detachable and should be retained by you. It is pre-printed with a health number assigned to your baby. You should keep this record and use it until you receive the babys plastic Ontario health card.

You may be out of the province for up to 212 days in any 12-month period and still maintain your Ontario health insurance coverage provided that you continue to make Ontario your primary place of residence.

To maintain eligibility for OHIP coverage you must be an eligible resident of Ontario. This means that you must :

  • have an OHIP-eligible citizenship/immigration status and
  • be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period and
  • be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province and

  • Coverage limits: Most short-term plans have coverage limits ranging from a few hundred thousand to a few million dollars.
  • Deductibles:The higher your deductible, the more youll have to pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. Most short-term health insurance plans have deductibles ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
  • Availability: Short-term health insurance is available in only 39 states, and providers may not operate in all of those states.

Qualifying Events With Different Effective Date Rules Even In State

As noted above, most special enrollment period applications will have first of the following month effective dates in most states as of 2022. But the state-run exchanges can set their own rules for this. However, there are some qualifying events that have their own effective date rules, regardless of the state:

  • If you get married, youre eligible to get coverage effective the first of the following month, regardless of how late in the month you enroll.
  • If you have a baby, adopt a child, or receive a court order for medical child support, the coverage can be backdated to the date of the birth, adoption, or court order.
  • Loss of other coverage is a qualifying event that also allows for different effective date rules if you enroll before your old plan ends. You can enroll up until the day your old plan ends and your new plan will take effect the first of the following month so you wont have any gap in coverage, assuming your old plan ends on the last day of the month.

If you wait and enroll during the 60 days after your old plan ended, your effective date could be the first of the second following month if youre in a state that still has a 15th-of-the-month deadline and you sign up after the 15th.

I work in the HR Dept and my employer had just changed the waiting period for a full-tilme worker as a new hire from 90 days to one year as of April 20, 2016. Can my company do this to new employees?

No they cant do that as far as I understand it. They can choose a retrospect period of up to a year when offering coverage as an employer for the first time, but they cant make new-hires wait a year . Anytime there is a specific legal question like this the best we can offer is general advice.

I had the same issue with the corner store company when I applied I asked about benefits they told me I believe 6 months I transferred to a different location only for them to tell me I had to wait be employed for one year. Only today that I discovered that according to my tax agent that this was highly illegal according to her for them not to provide me with insurance.

So is it illegal for my employer to have a mandatory 12 month waiting period for insurance coverage because I have been with them for 7 months and still not eligible.

Yeah, in general the waiting period cant be more than 90 days . If you were hired as full-time, that is 90 days from your start date if you were hired as part-time, but your hours have become full-time, there is more wiggle room for the employer. I dont think there is one simple answer .
