How Much Does Health Insurance Cost
The short answer: it depends. While the average cost of health insurance is $456 for an individual and $1,152 for a family per month in 2020, there are a variety of factors that determine your overall cost for health insurance. These variables include the number of members on the plan, age, location, income, and healthcare use.;;
While costs may vary, its important to keep in mind the multiple type of costs associated with each health coverage plan, including:
- Premiums the monthly out-of-pocket expense you pay to obtain health coverage
- Deductibles the maximum out-of-pocket expenses you pay in a year before the insurance company begins paying
- Co-pays flat fees paid for certain medical services
- Co-insurance a percentage you pay to share in the costs of medical services after your deductible is paid;
In order to get a more accurate estimate of what you would pay for your healthcare coverage, we recommend you talk to a licensed health insurance professional. They will be able to help you assess your needs, find coverage options that work for you and your budget, and sign up for health insurance.;

Some smaller employers may also qualify for tax credits if they buy health insurance through the SHOP Marketplace. In addition, there’s no limited enrollment period for the SHOP Marketplace, so small business owners can apply, pick plans, and enroll employees any time of year.

Why Does Open Enrollment Exist
Before the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could raise insurance premiums or refuse coverage to an individual based on their medical history. The Affordable Care Act made it illegal for insurance companies to deny coverage due to someones medical history or any type of pre-existing condition. To avoid a situation where people only get health insurance the month they know they need medical care, the Affordable Care Act established an Open Enrollment Period so that everyone can get health insurance once a year.
So now when someone pays their monthly insurance premium, it essentially goes into a large pot . And this gives insurance companies the ability to put that money towards medical care whenever a consumer needs it.

When Is Open Enrollment If I Get Health Insurance Through My Work
If you get health insurance through work, your employer sets the open enrollment period. Its typically in the fall so that your benefits can start at the beginning of the calendar year.;Choosing a health care plan for the year ahead is an important decision during open enrollment. Take some time to explore your options to help you decide what coverage is best for you before you enroll.
Choosing A Health Insurance Plan
Reading the fine print is important when choosing health care plans. These questions may help:
- Can I go to any doctor, hospital, clinic, or pharmacy I choose?
- Are specialists, such as eye doctors and dentists covered?
- Does the plan cover special conditions or treatments such as pregnancy, psychiatric care, and physical therapy?
- Does the plan cover home care or nursing home care?
- Will the plan cover all medications my physician may prescribe?
- What are the deductibles? This is the amount you must pay each year before your insurance company will begin paying claims.;
- Are there any co-payments? This is the amount of money you pay each time you receive medical services or a prescription.
- If there is a dispute about a bill or service, how is it handled?

The Closest Thing To Real Insurance If You Missed Open Enrollment
For people who didnt enroll in coverage during open enrollment or the COVID-related enrollment window, arent eligible for employer-sponsored coverage or Medicaid/CHIP, and arent expecting a qualifying event later in the year, the options for 2021 coverage are limited to policies that are not regulated by the ACA and are thus not considered minimum essential coverage.
And most of these plans are designed to be supplemental coverage, rather than a persons only health coverage. This includes things like limited-benefit plans, accident supplements, critical/specific-illness policies, dental/vision plans, and medical discount plans.
But there are a few types of coverage that are available year-round , and that can serve as stand-alone coverage in a pinch:
Farm Bureau plans in a few states
In Kansas, Tennessee, Indiana, and Iowa, members of Farm Bureau who are healthy enough to get through medical underwriting can enroll in Farm Bureau plans that are technically not considered insurance and thus dont have to comply with insurance regulations but that are available for purchase year-round. Similar plans will soon be available in South Dakota and Texas as well.
Farm Bureau plans are also available in Nebraska, without medical underwriting, for people who are actively engaged in agriculture, but these plans use the same November 1 December 15 open enrollment period that applies to ACA-compliant plans in Nebraska.

Have These Things Handy When Signing Up For Health Insurance
In order to make the enrollment process as smooth as possible, we recommend you have the following information available prior to getting on the phone and starting the enrollment process:
- Method of payment if you plan on getting covered today;
- Social Security number and birth date for you and any dependents;
- The names of your current medications
- Preferred doctors
Outline The Value Of Your Plan Options
As necessary as the process is, employees don’t always take the time to sort through their options. They may take it for granted. You should explain how the benefits you provide contribute to their total compensation. In addition, it would help to let employees know how they can reduce their overall benefit costs, for instance, by participating in a wellness program.
Also, if you’re considering a significant change, such as switching to a high deductible plan option, be extremely clear with your employees about what that involves. Explain the plan options so that they know exactly what to expect.

Communicate Early And Often
An easy way to understand what your employees are looking for from their benefits package is to ask them. First, conduct a survey that covers the basics of your plan options and see which ones are most important to your team. Then organize your plan based on their responses.
After you’ve selected your plan, alert your employees that Open Enrollment is coming. But remember choosing a benefits plan isn’t always easy for people. To connect with them early in the process, use clear, easy-to-follow language and terminology. Summarize your benefits choices and any changes from the previous year so they can examine their options. You might also want to consider bringing in a third-party representative to outline your benefits plan and answer any questions.;
