How To Get Health Insurance In Retirement

Ive been negligent.

Let me explain

My negligence has not been in ensuring my wife and I were covered, but rather in keeping you abreast of our final decision for how to get health insurance in retirement. A lot of you have asked me about it after reading Health Insurance in Retirement: Unsolved, the post I wrote shortly after my July 2018 retirement announcing our decision to use the COBRA extension for 18 months.

In December 2019, our COBRA would expire and our retirement puzzle remained unsolved.

We retired anyway.

Today, I pick up the story of what happened after our COBRA expired, including an update on the alternatives we considered and the ultimate route we chose. In short, weve been buying private insurance for 19 months now. For the record, I retired at age 55 and will be buying private insurance until my wife and I turn 65 in 2028. Itll cost us an astounding ~$250k to pay those monthly premiums, depending on how much they increase each year.

Ouch.

If youre struggling with how to get health insurance in retirement, todays post is for you. In addition to explaining our solution to the problem, Ive included a Resource section to help you solve this puzzle for yourself.

What Does Portuguese Public Health Insurance Cover

Visits to the doctor

After registering with your local health center, you can book appointments over the phone, in person, or online. When visiting the doctor in Portugal, the health insurance scheme covers most costs. However, you may need to pay the consultation costs, depending on your coverage. As an example, low-income earners and pensioners often pay less or nothing.

Hospital treatment

Portugal boasts around 200 hospitals, around half of which are private. Unless its an emergency, youll need a doctors referral to visit a specialist at a Portuguese hospital. Otherwise, it may not be covered by your health insurance. How soon you get an appointment and where you will be treated can often depend on whether youre covered by private insurance in Portugal or are using the state system, which has long waiting times for some services.

Medical emergencies

If you require an ambulance for a medical emergency, you should call 112. If you use an ambulance youll often need to make a small contribution towards the service that is not necessarily covered by health insurance in Portugal. Alternatively, if you can make your own way to the hospital, you should be able to visit an around-the-clock emergency department.

Option : Buy Through An Online Health Insurance Brokerage

Online health insurance brokeragealso called private enrollment websites or private exchangesoffers to help you compare health insurance plans or get the best available plan based on the information you give them. Comparison shopping is smart, but consumers should understand that these sites will not show them every plan in the market that meets their requirements.

Instead, these private exchanges will show a selection of plans that will earn them a commission if the consumer enrolls. They may display more prominently or provide more information on the plans that earn the brokerage a higher commission.

These marketing incentives dont necessarily mean the plans these sites offer arent good plans. It just means consumers should be aware that they might not be getting a complete picture of their options when they visit one of these sites.

Private enrollment websites may ask you for personal information that the federal and state marketplaces do not. They may ask about your height, weight, and preexisting conditionsfactors that can affect your eligibility for plans that dont comply with the Affordable Care Act. Your personal information may also be used by the company behind the website you give it to as well as their business partners to market other products to you.

As with buying a policy directly from a health insurance company, you cannot get premium tax credits if you buy your health insurance policy through a private exchange.

Do Not Wait Until Open Enrollment Period Ends

Open enrollment is a great time to get affordable health insurance, but its not your only option.

Many employer-based plans have open enrollment throughout most of the year, so you could qualify for one even if youre currently enrolled in a different plan.

It can be tricky, though, to figure out whether an insurance company will cover what you need when your employer doesnt provide health benefits.

If you can afford it and want more freedom, switching from an employer-based plan to a private plan may give you access to more benefits and services than what your current plan offers.

How To Apply For A Plan

Applying for an insurance plan through the health care marketplace can be done online through healthcare.gov or a state site, over the phone, or through regular mail by filling out a form that can be mailed to you or downloaded from the Internet.

Before you fill out an online application, you’ll need to create an account on either healthcare.gov or your state’s marketplace.

You’ll need to know a few things about each person applying for coverage. Be ready to provide:

    • Social Security numbers
    • information about employers and income
    • policy numbers for any current health insurance plans

If you have a job that offers health insurance but you’re not happy with it, you can choose to get coverage through healthcare.gov instead. But before you apply, you’ll need to fill out a form called an Employer Coverage Tool that can be found on the healthcare.gov website.

The application will ask for standard information like your name, your child’s name, your address, phone number, and email. You’ll need to answer questions about citizenship, dependents, and whether you plan to file a federal income tax return the following year.

If you want help paying for insurance, you will have to provide information about your yearly income . This includes income from jobs and other sources like:

    • Social Security
    • property rental
    • alimony

If you pay alimony or interest on student loans, you can deduct the amount you pay when you fill out your application.

How To Choose A Health Insurance Provider

Private health insurance in Portugal is widely available from well-known international private insurers as well as local private insurance companies.

Quotes vary wildly depending on the level of coverage. Most providers cant provide an accurate policy quote until you fill out a health questionnaire or undergo a health check. However, using comparison websites can help with your search.

Before signing up for private health insurance in Portugal, check your policy to note any clauses giving insurers the right to cancel or increase your rates once you reach a certain age.

Changing a policy or taking out a new policy after retirement age is considerably more difficult and expensive. Additionally, many Portuguese private insurers only offer policies for people aged under 55. If youre older, you may need to get cover from an international insurer.

Its possible to get advice from English-speaking insurance specialists who compare private health insurance products on your behalf. If you already have private insurance in another country, you could consider extending your plan to include coverage for Portugal.
