Nearly 45-million Americans dont have dental insurance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Statistics show that people who do have dental insurance are far more likely to visit the dentist regularly than those without coverage. Those without insurance are skipping basic preventative care, and living with painful and dangerous oral health conditions because they fear that they cant afford treatment.

But you dont need dental insurance to get affordable dental care. Your choices may include dental savings plans, payment plans, short-term loans, dental schools, and dental clinics.

Dental insurance isnt always the right choice for everyones needs, and dentists are accustomed to working with patients who dont have insurance. Dont assume that you cant afford dental care until you do a little research and explore all of your options.

Will Dental Insurance Save Me Money

In some cases, dental insurance can help lower your dental costs. For instance, Cigna dental insurance can be very helpful when provided by an employer. Insurers understand the power of prevention, so dental cleanings under many insurance plans are often free or very cheap.

But dental insurance isnt always a great deal if you have to pay for coverage yourself. If youre unemployed, finding affordable dental insurance can be difficult. Likewise if your current employer doesnt provide dental insurance.

Plus, dental insurance can be complicated by pre-existing conditions. While your insurance plan might help with routine cleanings, you could still wind up with big bills for procedures which insurance wont cover.

    What Does Dental Insurance Cover

5 Things to Take Care of your Teeth

What your dental insurance covers depends on the plan you choose. Here are the types of coverage you may consider when shopping for a dental plan:

    • Preventive dental care: Most dental plans cover you for certain preventive care at $0 cost. This often includes a dental exam and cleaning every six months, as well as certain types of mouth X-rays. There may also be coverage for sealants, fluoride, and more for children.
    • Restorative care: This includes everything from fillings for cavities and tooth extractions, to root canals, crowns, bridges, dentures, and more. Treatments like these range from basic to major. The more complex and specialized your dental care, the more costly it may be. If you expect to need dental care that goes beyond your preventive dental exams, you may want to explore dental plans that offer you more coverage for restorative services like these.
    • Orthodontic care: This area of dental specialization is focused on correcting teeth and bite alignment. If you or a family member expect to need this type of dental care, look for dental insurance that includes coverage for orthodontic services.

While you may have to pay out of pocket for dental exams, x-rays, and cleanings, those twice a year appointments with your hygienist can actually save you money in the long run. When you schedule those appointments, ask to have a fluoride treatment. Adults benefit from having fluoride as much as children do. It helps in preventing new and recurrent decay around old fillings and the sensitivity we may develop as we get older. Fluoride really does strengthen the teeth, its a fact.

    Talk With Your Dentist

Many dentists are willing to offer you discounts if you are able to pay cash since they don’t have to hassle with billing your insurance.

Some dentists will also let you work out a payment plan or have in-house financing companies they work with that will provide you with emergency loans. Typically bigger dental practices are more likely than smaller ones to offer these options, so that’s worth considering when you choose your dentist.

If your dentist does offer some type of financing, make sure you compare rates and terms with loans you could get on your own — don’t assume that they’ll always offer you a better deal.

    Can An Electric Toothbrush Help

A regular toothbrush works just fine when you use it the right way. But a powered version can make it easier to do a good job of cleaning your teeth. You may want one if:

    • You canât hold things very well. That includes if youâre elderly, have arthritis, or any issue that makes it harder to hold things.
    • You want to be sure you brush long enough. Your electric toothbrush will likely have a timer. Itâll let you know when youâve brushed for 2 minutes. Some buzz every 30 seconds.

Which Medical Conditions Make Dental Care Especially Important

People with diabetes should visit their dentist twice a year for professional cleanings, as theyre more prone to developing gum disease. Studies have shown that regular cleanings can also help keep blood sugar levels in check, according to the American Dental Association.

Cancer patients also need to monitor their oral health, as chemotherapy and radiation treatments can make them more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and mouth sores, which can lead to infection.

Smokers should also make an effort to visit the dentist to get checked for gum disease and oral cancer, as theyre at higher risk for these conditions.

Commit To Healthy Habits To Slow The Spread Of Existing Decay

5 Reasons Why You Shouldnât Pull Your Teeth

If youre aware that you already have a cavity but cant get immediate treatment, you should commit to forming healthy habits to slow the spread of decay. Neglecting your oral health can worsen the cavity, potentially causing you to need a more major treatment like a root canal instead of a simple filling. Until you can get a filling, invest in a good toothpaste and mouthwash, stick to a great oral hygiene routine, and adjust bad habits to protect your teeth from further harm.

Although you may not have access to dental care right now, you can take steps to improve your oral hygiene and ensure you get a clean bill of health at your next appointment with Dr. Lang. You may even discover that improving your oral health also improves your overall health, helping you feel better throughout the year.

To qualify for OSDCP you must:

    • be at least 65 years old
    • be an Ontario resident
    • have an annual income of $19, 300 or less for a couple: combined annual income of $32,300 or less

What Additional Cleaning Costs Should I Be Aware Of

Not all cleanings are the same. If you havent been to the dentist in a while, you might be faced with additional charges. For instance, excessive plaque and tartar build-up can add $100 or more to your bill.

Plus, most dentists require a comprehensive examination of new patients. Expect to be charged a fee for any consultation which involves x-rays, a full-mouth exam, impressions and similar procedures. This can increase costs anywhere from $50 to $400 or more.

Find A Sliding Scale Dental Clinic

Many charities, faith-based organizations, United Way, and health centers support free or reduced dental clinics for those with no dental insurance. These will work with you to determine what you can pay based on your income, and typically feature excellent dentists donating their time.

Pros of choosing a sliding scale or free clinic:

    • Youre unlikely to run into unfair charges, since the rates are income-based.
    • Sliding scale or free clinics are available in most urban areas, so there wont be a long commute for treatment for many people.
    • Since the dentists are licensed professionals, these clinics boast quicker procedures than a dental school offers.

    Possible setbacks:

    • These programs are often more difficult to enroll into, or are pop-up style, increasing the waiting period for a dental visit.

Try one of these databases to find a sliding scale or free clinic near you! These organizations want to help you if you have a need but no dental insurance:
