Know What You’re Buying
Carefully research your needs. Verify the terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and requirements of your insurance policy before you leave Canada.
When assessing a travel health insurance plan, you should ask a lot of questions.
- Is there a deductible, and how much is it? Plans with 100-percent coverage are more expensive but may save money in the long run.
- Does the plan provide continuous coverage for the length of your stay abroad and after you return?
- Does the plan exclude or greatly limit coverage for certain regions or countries you may visit?
- Does it offer coverage that is renewable from abroad and for the maximum period of stay?
- Does the company have an in-house, worldwide, 24-hour/7-day emergency contact number in English and/or translation services for health care providers in your destination country?
- Does it pay for hospitalization for illness or injury and related medical costs at your destination?
- Does it pay your bills or cash advances up front, so you dont have to pay them?
Do You Need Travel Insurance For Trips Within Canada
When planning a trip, a worst-case scenario is the last thing that most travellers consider. Whether you are planning on exploring Canada by car or by flight, you should be covered in case of an accident or illness. While you have medical coverage through your home province, it may not be enough if you travel to other provinces.
Trip Cancellation Coverage Review
First, lets review trip cancellation coverage. This type of insurance can provide reimbursement or coverage when the airline, tour operator, hotel, or transportation company cancels your trip. Depending upon the plan that you purchase, this type of coverage may either pay you directly or allow you to get a statement from your credit card or bank account for up to 30 days. If you have trip cancellation coverage but have already reimbursed the cost of your flight, the statement will also be helpful to you as you prepare for your next trip.

What Does Switzerland Travel Insurance Cover
Swiss travel insurance coverage includes:
- Medical emergencies. Travel insurance will cover any medical bills due to emergency medical treatment in Switzerland, such as a sudden illness or an accident. May cover dental emergencies as well.
- Evacuation and repatriation. If you get sick while in Switzerland and you need to be transported abroad or to your home country for treatment, then evacuation insurance will cover the resulting costs, such as air ambulance. It also covers for repatriation of remains, if the traveller passes away while in Switzerland.
But What If You Already Have Credit
Some people think the travel protection they have through their credit card is the same as travel insurance. Not necessarily.
When something goes wrong on a trip, travelers who paid with a credit card can dispute the charges or get some reimbursement for some items they bought with that card and sometimes thats it.

When Is Travel Insurance Actually Necessary Tips From A Pro
Even thinking about travel insurance can be a daunting task, especially for a first-time traveler. Here to answer your questions is Chief Insurance Analyst of Forbes Advisor, Amy Danise.
TravelPulse : Is travel insurance necessary for every trip and every kind of traveler?
Amy Danise : Travel insurance becomes important when you have a lot to potentially lose in nonrefundable deposits for a trip. This could include non-refundable airline tickets, a hotel that doesnt have a great cancellation policy and pre-paid excursions like guided tours.
If youre traveling outside the U.S., travel insurance is also important for its travel medical benefits. U.S. health plans and Medicare generally offer no coverage outside the U.S. So in case you become ill or injured in another country, you definitely want to have travel medical insurance.
If you dont have big deposits down on a trip and youre not traveling outside the U.S., you likely dont need to spend money on travel insurance.

Travel Insurance: Is It Worth It
When Covid-19 hit, travel insurance didnt help many travelers recover the cost of their canceled trips. What, then, were they paying for?
Through the travel insurance broker InsureMyTrip.com, Suzanne Tow of New York City paid $270 to cover a $5,000 trip in May to Yosemite National Park. When the tour was canceled, Ms. Tow filed a claim with her insurer, and discovered, like so many other travelers, that travel insurance doesnt cover cancellations because of a pandemic.
Theyre not risking a penny because theyre not paying a cent, she said.
Americans spent nearly $3.8 billion on travel protection in 2018, the latest figure available, up about 41 percent from 2016, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association. Now, for those contemplating traveling in an increasingly uncertain world, the question of whether travel insurance is worth buying looms large. If insurance couldnt help with that first wave of Covid-related travel cancellations, many irate travelers ask, what exactly were they paying for?
Will The New Epidemic Coverage Endorsement Meet Government Requirements For My Trip

Watch Out For The Excess
When youre comparing policies, its important to check the excess, as this can take a deal from being cheap to very expensive.
The excess is the amount you agree to pay should you need to make a claim on your insurance.
For travel insurance claims, excesses are applied on a per section basis. For example, if youre mugged on holiday you might have to claim under the medical expenses section, personal belongings section and money section of your policy. In this case three excesses could be deducted from your payout.
