Schengen Visa Insurance Requirements
Medical insurance for a Schengen visa must meet the following criteria:
- A minimum coverage of at least 30,000 EUR .
- It should cover all member states of the Schengen Area.
- Cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent health attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death.
Even though travel health insurance is worth having for all travellers to Europe, not everyone is required to have it. A travel insurance policy is a mandatory requirement only for travellers who need to apply for a Schengen visa. This group of travellers is always required to have the needed coverage for the entire period of their stay in Europe, regardless if they go there for business, tourism, studying, holidays, or for other reasons.
Foreign travellers visiting Europe who enjoys visa-free travel to the Schengen zone can get their preferred travel insurance policy if they want to and while it is highly recommended they are not required to.

Travel Within Eu Countries
If you are traveling within the EU, in most cases you will be covered by the reciprocal agreements as part ofthe EU Social Security Coordination. Essentially, this means that you will be able to travel through Europe andreceive medically-necessary care just as you would in your home country. Its important to remember that theremay be some differences in the way care is sought, and you may be responsible to pay a portion of the medicalcare out of pocket.
If you are already insured by a state social security system from any Member State of the EU, you are likelyeligible for a European Health InsuranceCard . Even though you will be able to seek necessary treatment, there are still many benefits that a reciprocal agreement wont cover. For example, emergency medicalevacuation, lost luggage and personal liability expenses are not part of this agreement. For these and otherunforeseen expenses, it is ideal to purchasea travel medical insuranceplan.
Do I Need Travel Insurance If I Have An Ehic Or Ghic Card
If youre travelling within the European Union , then an EHIC card is an important document to have. It is not however a replacement for European travel insurance. Also, despite the UK leaving the EU in January 2021, the EHIC remains valid for UK holders until the expiry date of their card. However, once your EHIC has expired you will have to apply for a Global Health Insurance . The GHIC will take the place of the EHIC and can be applied for and ordered now if you don’t already own an EHIC.
Both the EHIC and the GHIC entitle you to cheaper emergency treatment in a number of EU countries. Although the card entitles you to the same treatment as local citizens, you should be aware that many countries do not have their version of the NHS, so you may still have to pay for some aspects of healthcare.
For this reason, you should still take out travel insurance for Europe. That way, your medical bills will be included in your cover, and youll also be covered for things like cancellations, delayed flights and delayed personal possessions.

Vaccines And Diet Considerations For Europe
There is no universal standard on mandatory vaccines to enter Europe. You should be up to date on all routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include the Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella vaccine, and the polio vaccine. In some parts of Europe, vaccines for Hepatitis A and B are recommended. Rabies vaccination may also be recommended if you are participating in cave exploration. The Center for Disease Control has a comprehensive database of all recommendations for each European country.
In general, all of Western Europe has safe tap water and most of Eastern Europe does as well. But in Romania, Greece, Hungary, and Bulgaria in particular, check with your hotel staff. In most urban areas the tap water is potable but that may not be the case in their more rural regions.
In many parts of Europe, milk and other dairy products might be raw, meaning that they are not pasteurized. Therefore, this might not be the right choice for all travelers. If you are pregnant or if you have ongoing health concerns, speak with your doctor to make sure your trip is as healthy as possible.
Do You Need A Visa For Europe
Currently, you do not need a visa for short trips to Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and any country in the European Union . If you dont have a visa, you can stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This 90-day limit is an accumulation of the time spent in all of these countries during the 180-day period. If you exceed this limit, you may require a visa.
These rules are slightly different for visits to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. Only the time spent within any one of these countries counts towards the 90-day limit within the 180-day period.
You may require a visa if you are travelling for business, work or study. It’s also possible that youll need to complete the online ETIAS application form before setting off.
Bear in mind that with our European Annual Travel Insurance, we include some countries that are outside the EEA for example Egypt and Libya. You will need a visa to travel to these countries. You can check the entry requirements here.

Cost Of Travelling In Europe Without Travel Insurance
While medical treatment in Europe is not as expensive as in the US, for example, it still does not come cheap. The actual cost will depend on the specific country you are visiting, whether you seek treatment in a public or private hospital and the severity of your condition. A simple doctors visit for the flu or stomach bug might not set you back too much usually about 30 but if you get into an accident or have a broken arm or leg, then the prices can easily creep up.
In France for example, a doctors visit is about 25. If you need to be hospitalized, you would pay around 18 per night in addition to the cost of treatment. It is similar in Germany visiting a GP is about 25-30, with prices increasing with the nature of your condition and a separate fee for each night you spend in the hospital.
But this is only in public hospitals if you are admitted to a private hospital, you can easily expect to have a bill in the hundreds if not thousands
On the other hand, travel insurance for Europe for a single trip ranges from 18 to 35 in most reputable insurance companies. Looking at the bigger picture, this price is likely a very small fraction of the overall cost of your trip and well worth it for your peace of mind.
Do I Need To Have Had Both My Covid Jabs To Be Covered
