Benefits Of Pet Health Insurance Plans
Some pet parents might be skeptical about enrolling their pets in a pet health insurance plan. After all, you pay a monthly premium even if your pet is completely healthy. And, of course, there is a chance that a year might go by without you having to file a claim or use your pet insurance plan.
However, as our dogs and cats get older, they are very likely to develop some sort of medical condition. Even something as seemingly simple as a dog injuring his paw while running to catch a ball could rack up a large veterinary bill. Pet health insurance helps mitigate those costs. If your pet isnt enrolled in a plan before an illness or injury occurs, it will be considered a pre-existing medical condition. And, there arent any pet insurance providers that will pay for conditions that occurred prior to signing up.
Certain dog or cat breeds are more likely to develop hereditary conditions. For example, Labrador Retrievers tend to have weak hips and can very well develop hip dysplasia even in their early years. And with a dog insurance plan, pet parents can be assured that they will have the means to cover the costs if necessary.
The best time to enroll your dog or cat into a pet health insurance plan is when they are younger. The monthly premiums are very low and pet parents will be covered for any accident or illness that might occur.
What The Cost Of Pet Insurance Doesnt Cover
Your pet insurance wont cover:
- Pre-existing conditions: Anything that shows up in your pets medical history from before your policy was active
- Preventable situations and neglect: If a pet parent isnt providing a safe environment or a reasonable standard of preventative care for the pet, it could be considered neglect. If that neglect results in a health issue, it probably wont be covered. For the record, were sure youre not neglecting your pet, and we hate thinking about this one, too!
- Certain things not related to an accident or illness: Things like grooming other elective cosmetic procedures obedience training and boarding/travel
The truth is, pet insurance isnt cheap, but neither is the cost of keeping your pet healthy.
If youre not sure whether pet insurance is worth it, imagine the worst-case scenarioand whether youd have the money put aside to cover the medical costs.
Lemonades pet insurance policies are customizable for a reason. If you cant pay $60 every month for a policy with 90% co-insurance, thats OK. Weve made it so you can change your coverage to set a monthly price that suits your budget. Well still pay reimbursements and be there for you, and you can feel more comfortable with your spending on a regular basis.
In our unpredictable world, its even more important to protect the ones you loveso you dont have to make a tough decision down the road.

– When one of our dogs died 2 winters ago I called Healthy Paws right away to cancel the insurance policy for him. I made it clear that we still had 2 other dogs who were to continue coverage. However, about a week later I found out that all 3 dogs had been cancelled. It took me numerous phone calls, emails, letters, inquiries before the 2 living dogs got reinstated. Luckily the dogs did not experience any health issues during that time. Healthy Paws said that they would not be covered til they were again under coverage. The company did not act overly concerned or sorry for the error. Continue to search for other options. – HealthyPaws review by Leatha P., Colorado Springs
– Always been easy to work with, file claims, and get reimbursed – HealthyPaws review by Linda, Lenoir City

Lemonade Pet Insurance Claims
Like most pet insurance companies, Lemonade pays claims on a reimbursement basis. That means that you pay for your veterinary costs upfront and then Lemonade will reimburse you according to the terms of your policy. Lemonade also requires access to your pet’s full medical records as recent as up to 12 months before the start of the policy.
Fortunately, Lemonade makes it easy to file a claim. You can submit a claim directly from the Lemonade app. Lemonade may be able to pay you immediately for some claims, but for other claims, they will need to do a manual review.
Basic Accident & Illness Coverage
Lemonades basic accident and illness pet insurance coverage helps pay for diagnostics, procedures, and medications from covered accidents and illnesses.
The amount thats covered will depend first on the reimbursement rate you choose when signing up, and second on your annual deductible .
Your total annual coverage limit will apply if your claim exceeds it.
For example, lets say your pup likes to pretend hes Underdog, and he leaps from the top of the stairs in hopes of flying. Instead, he got a broken leg, and you rack up a $4,000 vet bill getting him x-rays, a cast, and medication.
If youve selected a 90% reimbursement rate, a $100 deductible, and a $20,000 annual limit, your claim would work out like this:
$100 deductible______________________________ $3,500 claim paid
Youd have to pay $500 and Lemonade would pay the rest. As I explained above, Lemonades basic plan doesnt pay for physical therapy or vet exam fees by default. However, you can get coverage for these expenses by selecting these add-ons when you sign up.

Overview Of Lemonades Coverage
New York State insurance filings provide a clearer picture of Lemonades new pet insurance offering.
Similar to other companies, Lemonade offers an Accident & Illness policy with the option for wellness coverage for an additional fee:
- The coverage appears industry standard, covering diagnostics, procedures, and medications for accidents and illnesses.
- The wellness add-on policy covers a capped amount of the annual costs for wellness exams, heartworm tests, parasite tests, bloodwork, and up to three vaccines.
- The reimbursement rates are 70-90% and deductibles are between $100 and $500 .
An interesting point to note, Lemonade separates exam fees and physical therapy for accident and illness-related conditions as custom add-ons for an additional fee. These features are commonly included by other providers instead of being offered as an additional coverage option. For some pet owners, this customization may be a nice value-add, allowing them to trim down plans to their desired features.
Also similar to other pet insurance offerings, Lemonades pet insurance varies pricing by breed. For example, a Lemonade-insured French Bulldog is 63.7% more expensive than a Lemonade-insured Beagle. Price differences exist because many breeds have unique health risks.
Lemonade Pet Insurance Plans And Coverage
Lemonade offers one primary pet health insurance plan that includes accident and illness coverage. Here are a few examples of incidents that are covered under this plan:
- Vomiting, diarrhea, poisoning, and infections
- Broken bones, sprains, and other injuries
- Cancer, heart disease, arthritis, allergies
- Skin, congenital, hereditary, and other chronic conditions
- Elbow and hip dysplasia
Lemonade policies will cover procedures, treatments, or other costs related to accidents and illnesses, including the following:
- X-rays, MRIs, CT Scans, ultrasounds, blood tests, labwork
- Emergency care, hospitalization, surgery, outpatient, and specialty care
- Prescription medications
For extra coverage options, you can add coverage for vet visit fees to your plan, which covers vet visit fees and exam fees related to a covered incident. You can also add coverage for costs related to physical therapy, including chiropractic care and acupuncture.
You can also purchase coverage for routine care with the Preventative Care add-on. Its intended to assist with keeping your pet healthy and preventing any future issues and covers 70%, 80%, or 90% of the vet bills related to routine care, depending on which reimbursement rate you choose with your standard policy.
Here are the covered items and specific annual limits for each benefit on a policy with an 80% reimbursement rate:

How Do I File A Claim With Lemonade
Filing a claim with Lemonade is simple through their app. After opening the app, click the pink Claim button in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Youll be prompted to confirm your contact information and sign an agreement verifying all provided information is true.
Lemonade will ask you to choose a reason for your claim, whether it be an injury, illness, or just for wellness reimbursement. To speed up the claim documentation process, the Lemonade app will allow you to record a brief video further explaining the circumstances behind your claim.
Lastly, youll need to upload a copy of your invoice from the vet as well as any supporting medical notes from the visit. Press Submit, and thats it!
How Policy Choices Affect Your Price
The biggest decision you can make to impact your price is whether to add on Lemonades optional Preventative or Preventative+ packages.
Adding the Preventative+ package will roughly double your monthly premiums. The cost of the optional basic coverage add-ons werent that substantial, and it seemed worthwhile to us.
Increasing or decreasing your deductible or reimbursement rate will also change your price. But in our experience, it only changed by roughly $5 per month in either direction.
Surprisingly, increasing your coverage limit has a disproportionately small effect on your price. In the image above, we selected a modest but comfortable $20,000 coverage limit. When we changed that coverage limit to $100,000five times the original limitour monthly premium only increased by $0.25 per month.
This means everybody should be able to get substantial coverage for an affordable price.
Is Lemonade worth it?
This question is often asked about pet insurance, and its one weve struggled with. Pet insurance can be a literal life-saver if your pet gets critically ill or injured and the resulting expenses are more than your family is willing or able to pay.
But some pet insurance companies charge so much that you end up paying almost as much in premiums and deductibles as you would have for the actual care your pet receives.

What Do Customers Say About Lemonade
Theres no doubt that customers love how cheap the policies are and how painless it is to sign up.
But the real praise comes from those who have already had to file a claim.
Reddit user, Obecalp86 says: I had a break-in and lost valuables worth $2000. After filing the police report, I fired up the Lemonade app and recorded a video, answered some questions, and uploaded receipts. My claim was approved immediately and I received the funds the next business day.
Another user, itsnotme24, has a similar story to tell: My claim was approved in 6 seconds after I submitted it. You tell your story on a short video in your own words, take a picture of your receipt or proof of purchase, enter the police report number and city. Which in my town theft can be reported via online form. Did it all at 4 am on a Saturday. Lemonade told me that the money will be in my bank account in 1-2 days.
Of the few negative reviews we found, customers say it can be hard to get a hold of customer service as their direct number can be difficult to locate. Instead, the best way to get in contact with their team would be through the contact form on their website or mobile app, or by emailing .
