What Adventure Activities Are Not Covered

This list is not exhaustive should you have further queries please contact our call centre and/or review the policy wording.

Whats Not Covered By A Travel Guard Plan

While the Essential, Preferred and Deluxe plans all offer varying degrees of coverage for your trip, there are some things that wont be covered by any of the plans. Here are a few highlights of things that aren’t included youll find full lists on each policy:

  • Coverage for trips paid for with frequent flyer miles or loyalty rewards programs: Travel Guard will only protect the trips you pay for with cash. If youre redeeming your points for that bucket list trip, unfortunately, you wont qualify for coverage. However, the cost of redepositing miles back into your account is covered.

  • Baggage loss for eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids or false teeth: These items should be kept with you in your carry-on as a general rule, since a Travel Guard policy wont cover them.

  • Known events: If you knowingly book a trip with some inherent risks, it wont be covered. For example, once the National Weather Service issues a warning for a hurricane, it becomes a known event. Once COVID-19 became a pandemic, it was categorized as a foreseeable event and was no longer covered. You can cancel the policy you purchase up to 15 days prior to your trip to receive a refund for the premium paid.

AIG Travel Guard has all the makings of a very good travel insurer. It has service centers scattered around the world, multi-lingual assistance, free cover for kids and a host of coverage options to suit all, including for those who enjoy a holiday cruise. Sadly, it slightly lets itself down when it comes to some areas of the website, and more information about making a claim wouldn’t go amiss. Overall, there is still much to like, but a little extra attention to detail in some key areas could easily elevate Travel Guard to so much more.

Pros

  • + Free cover for under 17s
  • + Cover options specifically for cruises

Cons

  • – Website is a little sparse of information
  • – Few details about claims process

Waiting a couple weeks for a refund is better than no refund at all, but the delay can depend on the type of claim you make and the company you bought your policy through.

“Always check with the insurance company directly because this information should be easily available before you purchase your policy,” says Gainullin. “Some expenses could be reimbursed instantly, and some require up to 14 days to process.”

What’s The Difference Between Flight Insurance And Travel Insurance

The main difference is that a flight insurance policy only covers your airfare. On the other hand, a travel insurance policy helps protect your flight as well as other parts of your trip. While you’re planning your next trip, think about where you’re going and what you’ll be doing. Once you have that, it’ll be easier to choose which policy works best for your trip.

If This Is All A Little Too Wishy

The answer to that murky unforeseen-foreseen line is cancel for any reason coverage .

‘Cancel for any reason’ is a great add-on if you wouldnt want limitations. If you opt for ‘cancel for any reason,’ its important you understand any limits on the actual reimbursement amount,” explained Gainullin. “For example, at battleface, ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ refunds up to 75% of your prepaid trip cost.”

For context, I also looked into AIG Travel Guard, which has “cancel for any reason” coverage available as an add-on to their higher-tiered plans. The add-on would have cost me just under $35 and would cover up to 50% of the prepaid trip cost.

Cancellation cover is a common inclusion with most standard travel insurance policies, but you can take it out separately if it doesnt offer enough cover. Alternatively, if you only want cancellation cover to protect you against cancelled flights, rather than things like baggage protection, you can just get it for that.

If You’re Worried About Covid

Should you buy travel insurance for your plane ticket?

If you’re worried about contracting COVID-19 while traveling and being forced to change your ticket and book a quarantine hotel, listen up: Gainullin says you should “look for products that specifically provide coverage for COVID-19, including for medical or quarantine expenses if you need to receive treatment while traveling. There could be an exclusion based on destination if government travel warnings are issued.”

If this is a concern for you, you should look into that “cancel for any reason” benefit or choose a policy that treats COVID-19 like any other illness .

What Is Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a major type of insurance policy overseen by state insurance regulators. By purchasing a travel insurance plan, you could be reimbursed for losses that may arise while you travel. Covered incidents can range from unexpected inconveniences such as delayed baggage, to major interruptions such as illness or injury.

As always, check with official sources regarding visa and travel requirements to your specific destination, since you don’t want to be caught off-guard. If you want to take a trip to Cuba, for instance, you may be surprised to find you need non-US medical insurance, according to the Department of State. A trip insurance policy will cover this requirement.

Don’t Assume That Your Medical Insurance Will Cover You While You’re Traveling

There are always exceptions , but your health plan will often have limited or no coverage in other countries. Plus, in addition to covering bodily injury or evacuation, travel insurance also covers things like lost baggage and trip delay.

“Interestingly, a study we conducted with Opinium found that 20% of Americans believe their primary medical insurance can cover their travel mishaps, but medical insurance often doesnt provide the same coverage as travel insurance,” explained Gainullin.

Cover Your Cruise With Cruise Travel Insurance Through Travel Guard

Is it worth getting cruise insurance. All travel insurance policies are not created equal and some may not include the type of coverage you want or need. If you would have purchased a travel protection policy that would have covered the reason you missed your cruise it would have been worth it. Again, for cruise travel insurance, we suggest looking at a site like insuremytrip.com.

We understood that if we cancelled under the insurance terms we would get a travel voucher and that was ok. Its usually not worth it to buy insurance for short, inexpensive domestic trips. If you want to spend more time relaxing and less time worrying, the answer is yes.

And while every cruise line strongly recommends purchasing some sort of insurance for your cruise, we dont recommend purchasing insurance offered through them, as traditional plans offer better coverage for a similar price. When it comes to traveling, it is better to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstance. We are still booked on the cruise and will not cancel because i’m not going to forfeit over $2,000 just for having a cruise booked for six months !

Imagine investing in a cruise package for $4,000, or a safari for $12,000, or even airfare for your family of six for $2,800. Just trying to wrap my head around all this. State department includes travel insurance as a key component of its travelers checklist.
