What Is A Dental Insurance Waiting Period

The Dental Plan With No Waiting Periods & Covers Implants!!!

Simply put, a dental insurance waiting period is the period of time between when you enroll for a plan and when you can start receiving benefits. Waiting periods can vary greatly from policy to policy.

The following factors might determine the length of your waiting period:

  • The type of dental insurance you purchase many Dental Health Maintenance Organization plans dont involve any waiting periods, while Dental Preferred Provider Organization plans usually do.

  • Your insurance provider policies can vary a great deal from provider to provider.

  • Type of dental service Some dental insurance companies will not pay for any work done during the waiting period, but most dental insurance companies will still cover preventive services.

How To Choose The Best Dental Insurance For No Waiting Period

There are several other critical considerations that you should use to comparison shop dental insurance with no waiting period. Here are a few of the most essential ones:

  • Coinsurance Amounts: This amount is what you pay after the deductible toward the treatment invoice.
  • Coverage Annual Maximum: This amount is the most the policy will pay per subscriber in a given year.
  • Deductible: This amount is what you pay before your dental insurance policy’s benefits and coverage apply. Sometimes the deductibles are satisfied annually some are lifetime deductibles.
  • Exclusions: These are what the policy does not cover, an essential data point for policyholders.
  • In-network vs. out-of-network: You save the most when you work with an in-network provider benefits often decrease out of network.
  • Waiting Period Waiver: Some dental insurance companies will waive the waiting periods for the Basic and Major care categories if the insured can show dental insurance coverage for 12 months before enrolling in the new policy. You will often see this clause in the fine print below the summary of benefits.

Denali Dental: Best Preventive

Denali offers two dental plans: the Summit Plan and the Ridge Plan. Both pay 100% for preventive services and 50% for diagnostic services in the first year.

The Summit plan also covers 30% of basic and major services in the first year. Then in the second year, it covers 75% of diagnostic services and 40% for basic and major services.

The Ridge plan pays 10% for basic and major services in the first year, which increases to 25% in the second year. Diagnostic services coverage increases to 60% in the second year.

In the third year, diagnostic coverage increases to 70% and basic and major coverage to 40%. And in the fourth year, the diagnostic services coverage reaches 80% and basic and major services coverage reaches 50%.

For our purposes of finding no waiting period dental insurance, we are most interested in the Ridge plan. It has a maximum benefit of up to $2,500 and there are no waiting periods for any of the treatments.

In return, as we mentioned above, this plan covers a lower percentage of treatment than the Summit Plan does, but if you need dental care right away on major services, it may be worth it to get some immediate coverage.

Does Insurance Cover Braces For Adults

If you need dental insurance with orthodontic coverage for adults, there’s some good news. Comprehensive dental insurance plans may cover orthodontic work for adults if it is for health reasons. Insurance plans won’t cover braces if it’s purely cosmetic. If your dental insurance doesn’t cover braces, consider purchasing a supplementary orthodontic plan, or enrolling in a dental discount plan.

But Consider Your Dental Care Utilization

So its important to run the numbers, consider your normal dental care utilization, and figure out whether it makes sense to buy a stand-alone dental plan, sign up for a dental membership with your preferred dentist, or just pay full price each time you need dental care.

An injury or illness can cost tens of thousands of dollars to treat, which is why its always a good idea to purchase comprehensive medical coverage. But the annual benefit caps on most dental plans mean that they wouldnt be particularly beneficial if you were to need tens of thousands of dollars worth of dental care. So although its almost never a good idea to self-insure your medical coverage, self-insuring your dental coverage might make perfect sense, especially if the coverage isnt being subsidized by an employer.

Somebody in good dental health who only receives two annual cleanings at $85 each would come out ahead if they self-paid, instead of purchasing a dental plan that costs $360 annually.

Choosing The Right Network

Dental Insurance No Waiting Period – Pay Less For Dental Care

Finding an in-network dentist is one of the biggest factors for choosing dental insurance.

Dental insurance may not be worth it if you use an out-of-network dentist as you will receive minimal or no discount.

Choosing a network with many local providers can make finding a dentist as easy as possible.

For example, some of the Humana dental plans cover 100% of dentists within the network and only 50% of out of network providers.

Be sure to check and double-check with them to make sure all procedures are from an in-network provider before scheduling basic or major work.

Dental Coverage Rights And Cost Sharing

Here is a quick summary of what you need to know about dental, your rights, and how cost-sharing works on dental plans:

  • A child must be offered dental, but you dont have to take it.
  • If you have dental coverage through the Marketplace, it will typically have a maximum of $700 for a child or $1,400 for a family .
  • Adults dont have to be offered dental. However, many Marketplace plans offer dental as part of the plan, or as a standalone. You cant cancel dental that is part of your plan, so keep this in mind.
  • If dental is part of your plan, you can still use cost assistance to lower your plan costs.
  • Even with cost assistance, when you reach the maximum, you typically pay 100% of the costs for dental work. This is the opposite of health insurance under the ACA where you pay 0% after your maximum. So dont be confused by that.
  • Oral surgery may be covered by medical insurance in some specific cases, but it doesnt cover any procedure that is not medically necessary.
  • Dental works best for routine care. It is uncommon to find any insurance that covers major dental work past a certain dollar amount.

Will Smoking Affect My Dental Insurance Rates

Similar to the two basic types of life insurance policies, smoking can play a big role in determining your monthly premium.

Typically if you have smoked in the last five years it can increase your rates.

The main reason for the increased rate is that gum disease and more dental issues are directly related to smoking and chewing tobacco.

What Does Orthodontic Insurance Cover

Orthodontic insurance should cover most services associated with fixing problems with misalignment, crooked teeth, spacing and overcrowding. This could include braces, headgear, or retainers, although it’s less likely to cover at-home clear aligners.

If you get supplemental dental insurance for braces, it should cover the following:

  • Correcting bite irregularities
  • Correcting teeth and lip alignment

Your orthodontic treatment may also require additional services as part of your teeth straightening treatment, and the good news is that orthodontic coverage often covers these as well:

  • Initial evaluation, including x-rays and treatment planning
  • Tooth removal
  • Treatment visits
  • Orthodontic appliances

If you’re set on getting clear aligners instead of traditional braces, you may be able to find an insurance plan that partially covers the cost. Read more about insurance for Invisalign.

Why Do Some Dental Insurance Plans Have A Waiting Period

Cigna Dental Insurance – No Waiting Periods

Insurance is meant to be purchased before you need it not as a quick fix right after something major happens. Many insurance companies have waiting periods to make sure people dont sign up for dental insurance just to get a quick discount on major services, only to cancel the policy once the problem has been taken care of.

Kids Dental Insurance: An Overview

Just like adults, children need to follow a regular routine of brushing, flossing and caring for their teeth and gums. Sometimes even regular brushing isnt enough to keep teeth clean and free of food debris.

Leftover food particles can lead to bacteria growth, which increases your childs chance of tooth decay or cavities. Cavities are damaged areas on the surface of the tooth. If these damaged areas are left untreated, cavities can form into holes in the tooth. About 20% of children ages 5 to 11 have 1 or more untreated, decayed teeth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dental insurance plans help cover the cost of expensive dental treatments. Some dental insurance companies offer dental plans specifically for children. Many plans provide regular cleaning services and dental checkups at no extra charge.

The Affordable Care Act made childrens dental services essential coverage for children under 18. This means any health insurance plan that covers children must also offer dental benefits. Dental coverage for children can be a part of the health insurance plan or can also be a standalone plan.
