But Is Expedia Travel Insurance Worth Buying
Expedia customers traveling domestically within the USA who think that they are getting cheap Expedia Travel Insurance will have little or no cover. Expedias insurer, AIG Travel Guard, wont even call it Travel Insurance it is referred to as a Flight Cancellation policy. The policy has so little in the way of travel cover we cannot think why the policy was created. It is nearly useless.
Should you buy Expedia Travel Insurance when traveling internationally you will have woefully weak protection. Again, AIG Travel Guard will not call it Travel Insurance on its policy documents. This time, it is known as a Flight Total Protection Plan. There are so many weaknesses in this policy. The international travel health protection is totally inadequate, in our opinion.

Where To Buy Travel Insurance
All insurance companies are rated based on their financial stability A.M. Best is the oldest, most recognized provider of ratings in the global insurance industry. Well include only those companies with excellent or above ratings.
Before we discuss specific travel insurance companies, however, well cover a few great travel insurance comparison sites that can help narrow your choices before selecting a specific company and travel insurance policy.
Cancellation Coverage For Any Reason
In the travel insurance world, there is also Cancel for Any Reason coverage. For instance, if a person wants to cancel a trip to a foreign land over political upheaval concerns, this coverage will ensure reimbursement for at least a portion of travel expenses.
Before purchasing trip insurance, it is vital to compare coverage. Each plan will offer various benefits. It is essential to review and comprehend the individual description of coverage so that the best policy is chosen.

Allianz Affordable Annual Travel Insurance
With nearly a dozen awards so far in 2018, highly-rated Allianz is a trusted company in the travel insurance arena.
I was particularly impressed with their annual travel insurance policy offerings that are surprisingly affordable. The prices listed above are for an annual policy for travelers ages 30-80, and it covers unlimited trips of 45 days or less during the 12-month period.
Its not just a medical policy either. In the top 2 plans above youll find trip cancellation/interruption, change fee coverage, collision damage waiver, and even business equipment coverage.

Expedia Travel Insurance Costs
Travel insurance generally costs between 4 and 8 percent of the total trip.
While this is the industry standard, the actual costs of your travel insurance usually depend on the level of coverage you select and how comprehensive your plan is.
Travel insurance companies base their actuarial math on several factors.
The length of the trip is a significant determiner, as the longer youre traveling, the more likely adverse calamities could occur. Destination dramatically impacts the price as well.
If youre visiting an area with a high crime rates, political unrest, or poor infrastructure, to name just a few, insurance providers may view you as a higher risk. The age of the policyholder can also influence the price of the premium.
Generally, consumers aged 70 or over can expect to pay considerably more for their travel insurance.
The price of travel insurance is calculated based on risk, and the older you are, the more your risk increases in the eyes of the insurance providers.
Travelers can get a quote from Expedia by visiting its website and providing precise details of the trip that they plan on making.
Expedia doesnt have annual options available, so it may not be possible to get a standard rate year in year out.
Theres no minimum age limit for insuring children via this company, though dependents are covered under their parents policy.
Expedia only refunds policies purchased ten days before the trip, provided no claims have been made.

How Much Does Flight Insurance Cost
The cost of flight insurance varies by the provider, whether it is offered by a third party or the airline itself. Although the cost may be very low compared to the cost of a flight, weve discussed previously in this article why you may want to consider comprehensive travel insurance instead. With comprehensive travel insurance you can insure all of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs for an average cost of 4-10% of your total trip cost. For example, a couple in their 50s traveling to Ireland for a ten day trip costing $5000 could insure their trip with a comprehensive plan starting at around $180, depending on the exact limits and exclusions in the plan.

What Does Flight Insurance Cover
For most flight insurance plans, the coverage is limited to unexpected events related to your air travel. In general, this type of policy covers flight delay, trip cancellation or trip interruption, and lost, damaged, or stolen luggage up to the plan limit. It also covers you if youre not able to fly due to a documented medical reason on the date of your trip. Keep in mind that since the limits are low, it may leave some gaps in coverage.

When To Buy Travel Insurance
Most travel insurance policies can be purchased up until the day of your departure. However, some policies contain pre-departure benefits, so youll want to buy your policy as soon as possible.
For example, you may have coverage that covers you getting ill and not being able to take your trip.
The general advice is to buy your policy when you make your first payment on the trip.
Since policies can be priced according to how much your total trip costs, you can take out the insurance based on what youve already paid and call the company to raise the amount of the policy once youve made additional payments.
Hot Tip: Travel insurance policies include a free-look period, where you can review your policy once youve received it and decide if its right for you. This free-look period is usually 10-15 days depending on the company and type of policy.
Travel Insurance Covers Baggage And Delays
Baggage Coverage can reimburse you for your personal belongings if your luggage is lost, stolen or damaged.
Baggage Delay Coverage provides money to buy essential items until your delayed bags arrive, such as a toiletry kit, a swimsuit, or another change of clothes.
Travel Delay Coverage provides reimbursement for additional expenses if your flight is delayed, such as an extra night in a hotel or a meal at a restaurant.

Unforeseen Pregnancy Complications: What Does Travel Insurance Cover
Travel insurance from Allianz Global Assistance covers losses resulting from unforeseen pregnancy complications, such as pre-eclampsia or pre-term labor. This means if you must cancel or interrupt a trip because of a covered pregnancy complication, your travel insurance may reimburse you for nonrefundable trip costs. Your plan may also reimburse you for the emergency medical care you received for those unforeseen complications while traveling.
However, travel insurance does not cover trip cancellations due to normal pregnancy, unless your plan names normal pregnancy as a covered reason and the pregnancy occurred after the effective date of coverage . Nor does travel insurance cover the costs of normal childbirth while traveling. To learn more, read this quick guide to pregnancy and travel insurance.
Customer Reviews & Reputation
Before purchasing any travel insurance policy, its important to look at the insurers reviews, to gain insight into the company should you need its services on your trip.
Expedia has been awarded the Better Business Bureaus highest rating of A+.
Though this rating is not uncommon, it is noteworthy that Aon Affinity has closed 49 complaints in the past 12 months.
This high volume of complaints can be attributed to the fact that this company is quite a large insurance provider.

International Expedia Travel Insurance Example
We ran a quote for a flight from San Francisco to London, finding a trip that cost $865.
Again, at check-out Expedia encourages us to buy its flight insurance. We get slightly different language from them this time, because the trip insurance policy has changed.
Instead of an ‘Expedia Flight Cancellation’ plan, which we saw when traveling domestically, we get the ‘Expedia Flight Total Protection Plan.’ Now, that sounds comprehensive, doesnt it? Anything that is called a Total Protection Plan ought to be all-encompassing, you would think.
Taking a look, we see the following.
The same message that 2 million people buy Expedia Travel Insurance each year.
An overview of the benefits that total protection buys us for $56.
Then we see a similar type of language to scare/nudge our traveler into buying this awful cover.

3 reasons you might need travel protection:
How Does Travel Insurance Work For Existing Medical Conditions
The concept of “reasonably foreseeable events” gets complicated when you’re talking about existing medical conditions. For instance, if you’ve been treated in the past for back problems, and then a slipped disc forces you to cancel your trip, is that something you should have foreseen?
Here’s how we look at it. Travel insurance from Allianz Global Assistance does cover most existing medical conditions if you insure the full cost of your trip within 14 days of paying your first trip deposit and if you’re medically able to travel when you do so. We define an existing medical condition as an illness or injury that you, a traveling companion or family member were seeking or receiving treatment for, or had symptoms of on the day you purchased your plan, or at any time in the 120 days before you purchased it.
This means that again, timing is everything. To make sure your existing medical condition is covered, get your doctor to certify you’re medically able to travel beforeyou buy travel insurance. And don’t wait to buy coverage make sure you purchase your plan within that 14-day window after making your first trip payment .

Crossing The Golden Gate Bridge In A Rental Car
The Chase Sapphire Preferred Cards huge benefit is that it acts as primary collision coverage when you are renting a car.
got into a car accident tested it out for you guys and found out the process works pretty smoothly. .
Its worth it if you want the collision coverage and your only option is the car rental facilities plan. Their prices are $25ish, so if you rent a car more than three days a year, you are even.
But thats not necessarily your only option.
When booking through Expedia, you are offered their own plan:
Expedia Zero Deductible Collision Damage Protections plan is only $9 a day for $35,000 in primary coverage with no deductible. Note: These types of plans do not cover liability. Just damage to the rental car. Your insurance probably covers liability, but if you are an uninsured driver , you will need liability insurance too when renting. I wouldnt drive without coverage at all.
Expedias Collision Damage Protection used to feel not worth it. It had a $250 deductible and with other options out there, it was better to get one without a deductible just in case.
Now that it has no deductible, I think this is one of the better options for people who do not rent a car that much. It would take 11 rental days to make having a Chase Sapphire worth it.
The cost varies depending where you are renting from. I checked in Cancun and it was only $2 more per day.
I didnt opt to use Expedias coverage because I already have a Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
You Cant Cancel A Trip For A Foreseeable Reason
On June 1, you book a week-long resort stay in Montego Bay, starting October 1. The trip is five months away, so you figure youll wait to buy travel insurance until closer to your departure. Then, on September 27, Hurricane Heidi forms in the Caribbean and starts swirling toward Jamaica. Uh-oh. Time to buy travel insurance or is it already too late?
Travel insurance is designed to protect a traveler from certain unforeseeable events not foreseeable events. What does that mean? A foreseeable event is an outcome that a reasonable person in similar circumstances would expect to occur. For instance, once the National Weather Service issues a warning for a storm or hurricane, it is considered a foreseeable event with known potential to affect your travel. If you wait to buy travel insurance until after the warning is issued, you won’t be covered for losses related to that storm. Your plan can, however, cover losses caused by other, unrelated covered reasons.

Can I Buy Travel Insurance After Booking
Passport? Check. Visas? Check. Travel vaccines? Check. Your big trip is just two weeks away, and youve thought of everything then you realize you forgot to buy travel insurance. Oh no! Is it too late?
The short answer is: Its not too late! You absolutely can buy travel insurance after booking your trip. However, its always best to purchase insurance as early in the process as possible. If you procrastinate, you may miss out on certain benefits. Below, well explain why.
Considering buying travel insurance in case your trip is affected by COVID-19? Its important to know that while epidemics are generally excluded from coverage, we are currently offering certain temporary accommodations for COVID-19 related claims. Also, some of our travel insurance plans now include the new Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, which adds covered reasons to select benefits for certain losses related to COVID-19 and any future epidemic.
To see if your plan includes this endorsement and what it covers, please look for Epidemic Coverage Endorsement on your Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Benefits may not cover the full cost of your loss. All benefits are subject to maximum limits of liability, which may in some cases be subject to sublimits and daily maximums.
Lesson Learned #: Credits Are Sorta The Nice Version Of A No
I start with that Alaska Airlines flight because it is obviously at the top of the urgency totem pole. After some waffling, I decide to call Alaska Airlines, instead of Expedia, since the flight is coming up so quickly and I want to make sure I go right to the source. Unfortunately, a quick visit to the Alaska Airlines website tells me their call center doesn’t open until 5:00am. I won’t be canceling my flight at that exact moment, but I have a few hours to grab some rest, and our sick baby is nice enough to let me doze off.
5:00am – Right around the time I should be arriving at the airport, I wake up and dial their help number. I’m honestly not sure what I’m going to get, based on this cryptic blurb on my Expedia itinerary:
“We understand that sometimes plans change. We do not charge a cancel or change fee. When the airline charges such fees in accordance with its own policies, the cost will be passed on to you.”
… combined with this message on the Alaska Airlines cancellations web page:
“Depending on your fare, there may be a fee to change or cancel your reservation. If a fee does apply, it is $125 per person, per change, in addition to any difference in fare.”
Understandably, it’s too late to get a refund. No big surprise there. But I have an ace up my sleeve. Slyly, I tell her that I purchased an Expedia protection plan, not quite sure what I expect her to do with that, like maybe it will grant her the powers to erase the whole situation, like it never happened.
