What Does Protected No Claims Mean On Car Insurance

Don't Miss

What Does It Cost

Car insurance: Is it worth paying to protect my no claims bonus?

The cost of protecting your no claims bonus will also vary, so make sure you test both scenarios. In general, it will cost between £40 and £80 to protect. It is up to you to decide whether this amount is worth the risk. Protecting your no claims is certainly expensive and probably overpriced, but the potential costs can be high, so you need to weigh up the risks for yourself.

Is Accident Forgiveness Worth It

If you have a clean driving record, you likely already have good rates. It may be worth it to get it to protect yourself in the event of causing an incident.

New regulations about accidents and premium increases have made many drivers second guess the need for additional protection. The Financial Services Commission of Ontario explains :

Insurers can no longer use a minor at-fault accident that occurs on or after June 1, 2016 meeting certain criteria to increase your premiums. The criteria include that no payment has been made by any insurer, that there are no injuries and that damages to each car and property were less than $2,000 per car and were paid by the at-fault driver. This provision is limited to one minor accidents every three years.

Therefore, it is worthwhile only in the event of at-fault incidents involving significant damage something to think about when considering before adding this endorsement.

Do I Have To Take A Green Card With Me When I Travel Abroad

Green cards are no longer mandatory in most European countries. Countries such as Albania, Belarus, Iran and Ukraine, do still require one.

Do note that although most European countries dont require you to have a green card, you should still take a copy of your insurance documents with you, and ensure you have an international driving permit before you travel.

Can I Transfer Ncb From Overseas

If youve built up a no-claims bonus overseas, you may be able to transfer it when you come to UK shores.

Much will depend on the insurer and they usually specify which countries theyll accept no-claim discount from.

If your no-claims bonus was built up outside this list of countries, you may be unlucky. Its worth contacting your insurer and finding out what they can offer.

How To Transfer Ncb To New Car Insurance

No Claim Bonus is a reward offered to the policyholder for not raising a claim. This bonus is given as per the guidelines of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India . Even if you decide to buy car insurance from another insurance company or buy another car , you can claim the NCB accumulated in your name.

You will need a No Claim Bonus Transfer certificate from the insurance company to be able to continue the benefit. Just remember that there should not be a gap of more than 90 days between the expiry date of your insurance policy and renewal. NCB transfer rules suggest that the benefit cannot be transferred to a new owner of the vehicle in case of a sale, as the NCB is associated with the car owner and not the car.

When Is No Claim Bonus Applicable

No Claim Bonus is applicable at the time of policy renewal and only on the Own Damage Cover component of your car insurance policy. Own Damage, as the name suggests, is the damage done to the insured car. Another component of car insurance is the Third-party Car Insurance cover, buying at least this component is mandatory as per Indian law. It is beneficial when a major accident is caused by the insured car in which third party property is damaged or a person is injured.

Financial protection against damage to the insured car is offered by a Comprehensive car insurance policy. Thus, NCB is applicable only on a Comprehensive policy and not on a Third-party Liability policy.

Do I Lose All My No Claims Bonus After An Accident

No Claims Discount car insurance Hong Kong

What happens to your no claims discount after an accident will depend on whether or not the accident was your fault. If it was, you may lose some or all of your bonus.

If the accident wasnt your fault and your insurance provider is able to recover the costs from the other drivers insurer, this wont have any effect on your no claims discount.

Matters can get a little more complicated if you were involved in an accident with an uninsured driver as your insurance provider wont be able to recoup the costs and as a result, your no claims discount is likely to be affected.

If your car is stolen or vandalised, this will usually be treated like an at-fault claim by insurers as its unlikely youll be able to recover any costs from the culprit. Your no claims discount will be reduced or removed as a result.

If you are involved in an accident where no one was to blame, both insurance providers may split the cost of the claims and both yours and the other drivers no claims discount would be reduced or removed.

How Frequently Can A Named Driver Officially Drive The Vehicle

If youre currently a named driver on a policy and are unsure how much youre allowed to drive the car, please contact your insurance company directly. Theyll be able to confirm any information about the policy.

If you drive the car more often than the main driver, youll need to inform the insurer. If you dont, that can be seen as fronting, and may invalidate your insurance if your insurer finds out.

How Does The No Claims Bonus Work

A no claims bonus , or more correctly a no claims discount, is awarded if you don’t claim in the latest policy year. Even if you have an accident that wasn’t your fault you’re hit by an uninsured driver, or your car gets stolen you could lose your NCB, and your premium could even go up at renewal.

You can save a lot on your insurance once you’ve got 5 or more years’ NCB around 60 to 80%. The value of each year’s NCB varies between insurance providers, but according to The Association of British Insurers, even just 1 year’s NCB could lower your insurance by 30%.

There’s also an NCB expiry, which happens if you stop driving for more than 2 years. After that you’ll have to start again.

Of course, if you’ve never driven you won’t have an NCB, so insurers see you as a higher risk, which means more expensive insurance.

To get that NCB a bit quicker, and ultimately get cheaper insurance, some providers offer 10 month policies. These are sometimes called a ‘Bonus Accelerator’. Such policies aren’t accepted by all insurers, so it’s worth checking before trying to speed things up.

What Is A Non

A non-fault claim usually occurs where another driver is involved and has complete liability for the incident, for example, they pulled out at a junction and hit your car, or they hit you from behind while your car was waiting at traffic lights

In a non-fault claim, your insurer will attempt to recover any repair/replacement costs from the other drivers insurance company.

But when your insurer cant recover the costs from the guilty party, for example in the case of vandalism or a hit and run accident, these may be considered as fault claims even though you were not to blame for the incident.

Will My No Claims Discount Be Affected If I Make A Claim

Drivers who pay to protect their no claims discount are ...

It will depend on who was deemed to have caused the accident, or in some cases if the accident was confirmed to be caused by bad weather. If it is decided youre the at-fault driver and you need to make a claim on your policy, you will likely lose some or all of your no claims bonus when you renew your insurance.

If you can prove you werent at fault and your insurer is satisfied, your no claim bonus will not be affected. For most customers who are making a claim on window glass only, their no claims discount shouldnt be affected.

Some policies offer No Claims Discount Protection, which allows customers to make a certain number of claims without impacting their bonus, for an extra fee. ASIC has advised consumers to be wary, finding in some cases the cost of buying this form of protection was higher than the benefit received by maintaining their no claims discount rating.

Will A Protected Ncb Prevent My Premium Increasing After A Claim

Not necessarily. Protecting your no claims discount only safeguards the discount on your premium. The annual premium itself could still go up to reflect your current risk factor and general pricing trends in the insurance industry as a whole. Your insurance provider will use your claims history as a factor to determine your annual premium and then your no claims bonus is applied at the end.

You Can’t Insure A Car You Don’t Drive To Keep Your No

If you’ve a big enough no-claims bonus, it might make more sense financially to buy a dirt-cheap car insurance policy just to keep your insurance going, so that you can get a massive discount when you start driving again.

But that doesn’t mean you can insure a car you don’t drive. You need an “insurable interest” to take out a policy on something.

That basically means you have to have an actual reason to want to protect the thing you’re insuring – and some random car you don’t drive probably doesn’t count.

What We Look At

We look at evidence from both you and your insurer to work out what happened.

If theres been a misunderstanding or confusion about the policy, well look at its terms. Well check whether the information was clearly explained to you when the policy was sold, and how clear the sales process was.

Heres a bit more detail on what we look at for specific complaints:

  • If your insurer has settled a claim, but the accident wasnt your fault

If your insurer has accepted liability for an accident, it doesnt necessarily mean they think youre to blame. It may mean theyve considered the evidence and decided to pay out, rather than fight a claim they think they might lose in court.

Your insurer may have accepted liability for an accident without asking you first. Most policies say the insurer can decide to accept liability. But we often find they havent always explained this to the customer.

Its not our role to investigate the accident and decide whos responsible. But well look at the evidence available to your insurer at the time and check they made a fair decision. This may include things like:

  • accounts from you and any other drivers involved
  • witness statements
  • CCTV footage

If I Make A Claim Will I Automatically Lose My Ncd

Not necessarily. Your NCD may not be affected if you are found totally not at fault in an accident involving another vehicle. In all other cases, your NCD may be affected.

If there is a claim made under the policy, your NCD will be reduced as follows.

Private Car Policies
20% / 15% / 10%0%

If you make more than one claim in a year, your NCD will be reduced to 0%.

Please check with your insurer whether your NCD will be affected.

What You Need To Know About Accident Forgiveness

Accidents happen, and often involve drivers with squeaky clean driving records. But should a single incident after years of clean driving negatively impact your car insurance costs? Most would agree that it shouldnt. This is why many insurers offer accident forgiveness to their policyholders to minimize the impact of an incident.

The best of us make mistakes from time to time, and we all deserve to be forgiven, even if it was not your fault. According to a Toronto Star report there are 160,000 car accidents happening in Canada per year. Many drivers feel safer knowing they have an extra layer of protection.

Would You Lose Your No Claims Anyway

Some people think that if you have a claim you lose your whole discount if its unprotected, but the truth is that you dont necessarily lose all of it. In general, if you have 6 years or more, so after making a single claim in a year you will have 4 years no claims to use the next year. It is worth looking up how your no claims discount would be downgraded; the difference in price between 6 years and 4 years is very small, whereas the difference between 4 years and 2 years is much larger. Of course, if you have an unlucky year and make 2 or 3 claims, you can lose a 10 year no claims bonus altogether. It is unlikely to happen of course, but you should make sure you know the potential costs just in case.

Does Accident Forgiveness Reset

Car insurance: Is it worth paying to protect my no claims ...

It depends on the insurer. Some will only forgive your first at-fault accident. Others may reset your accident forgiveness after three or more years of accident and claims free driving. Even if you switch providers, they will re-evaluate your record and ask how many years you have been incident free.

How Your No Claim Bonus Is Calculated

To get a no claim bonus, you usually need to have comprehensive car insurance.

Your insurer calculates your bonus by looking at:

  • how long you have been driving
  • your claims history, including any claims by other drivers on your policy
  • your rating from your previous car insurer

To find your rating, check your current car insurance policy.

Generally, ratings start at 6 and reduce by one for each year you don’t claim. For example, ‘Rating 1’ drivers haven’t made a claim for the last five years .

If you have no car insurance history, insurers may look at your driving record to calculate your bonus.

What Is A ‘no

A no-claims bonus – also known as a no-claims discount – is a percentage discount your insurer shaves off your insurance premium to reward you for not having made a car insurance claim in the previous year.

So if, for example, you had a no-claims bonus of 30%, youd pay £700 where you would otherwise have paid £1,000.

For each consecutive year that you dont make any claims, the discount increases. So where your insurer might award you 30% for one year without claims, five claims-free years under your belt might net you 60%.

Will I Still Have My No Claims Bonus If I Change Cars/policies

If you stay with the same insurance provider but switch cars, you can usually transfer your no claim discount along with your policy. If you switch insurance providers, it is at their discretion whether they maintain your no claims discount, with some requesting evidence such as a renewal certificate from your current insurer which states your no claim bonus rating.

Check with your insurance provider if you are unsure.

Wise Owl Series (Eps 5) – No Claims Bonus, Proof of NCB & Protected NCB

When you make a claim on your policy you’ll usually lose some or all of your NCB if your insurer has to pay out even if it’s not your fault. How much of it you actually lose depends on how many years NCB you have, as well as the insurer.

After an accident, there might be some situations where your NCB isn’t affected. Let’s say you were hit by another driver and they agree it was their fault your insurance provider may recover all the costs from the other driver’s insurance, saving your NCB.

What Is No Claims Discount Protection And Is It Actually Worth It

No claims discount protection typically means a policyholder can make a claim on their car insurance, if they need to, without losing their no claims discount altogether. However, there is usually a limit on the number of claims a driver can make over a period of time while still retaining the discount. This varies from insurer to insurer, so do check details first.

With no claims discount protection, a driver is essentially paying an extra fee to protect the number of no claims discount they have built up. It could be infuriating to have driven for five years or longer, without experiencing even so much as a minor bump or scrape to your car, and then find yourself involved in an accident which could result in you losing some or all of your NCD.

For example, if you havent protected your NCD with your insurer, you could lose five years worth of no claims discount if another driver was to reverse into your car in the supermarket car park and you needed to claim for repairs.

In this scenario, your no claims discount could be lost, and youll need to build it up all over again!

Car Van Or Motorcycle

No claims bonus protection is an optional extra on car, van and motorcycle insurance policies, which means one claim in the insurance year will not affect your no claims bonus at all. After more than one claim, step back no claims protection will apply. Although you can protect your no claims discount, your premium may still be affected by any claims we pay.

Step back no claims applies if you have not opted to protect your no claims bonus, if you claim you can keep part of your no claims discount – five or more years no claims will step back to two years discount, four years step back to one year discount and three or less years will go back to zero years discount.

You must have at least four years no claims bonus to avail of no claims bonus protection.

What Is Protected No Claims Bonus For Car Insurance

You can pay to guarantee or protect your NCB. ‘Guaranteed’ means a claim won’t reduce your bonus but you won’t get extra discount that insurance period. ‘Protected’ allows two claims in three years before the bonus is reduced, and, again, you won’t get any discount in that period.

The difference between the Guaranteed and Protected schemes is with Protected, if you keep on making claims in consecutive insurance periods, you can lose the protection and ultimately, some of your discount too.

Where your bonus remains unaffected, in most instances a claim will lead to some increase in premium at renewal. However, our motor premium calculation will include the discount to which you are entitled.

The Type Of Car You Drive

Having a car with is the type of car you drive, with the cars speed, security features, and value all playing a big part in increasing the cost of your insurance.

Increase your voluntary excess

This will result in a cheaper monthly premium. Before you take out car insurance make sure you can afford any voluntary excess. This excess is in addition to the compulsory excess set by your insurance provider. This is what you would have to pay if you ever have to claim. Pay upfront

Pay for your insurance in one go if you can. Spreading the cost of your car insurance over 12  monthly payments may seem cheaper but remember you will be paying interest on top of the amount you pay towards your car insurance premium.    Drive less

Limiting your miles makes you less of an insurance risk. Simply because you are reducing your risk of having an accident. When you take out your car insurance policy the insurer always asks for an estimate of your maximum annual mileage. You need to try and youre your mileage low, although you need to be realistic as to how much you will drive. Extra security

Having an alarm or immobiliser is considered a theft deterrent and by deterring car thieves you can reduce your car insurance. Not all insurers will offer this, so check first.

Consider black box or telematics insurance

Black box, or telematics, insurance can help reduce your car insurance over a period of time.

A small device, the black box is installed in your car.

Can I Use My No Claims Discount On More Than One Vehicle

No, if you have insured more than one car, you earn a No Claims Discount on each car, separately. You must build up a No Claim Discount on each vehicle you own separately and remember to always advise your insurer of who the main user of each car is as this is an important material fact that you must disclose.
