How We Chose The Best Dental Insurance For This Guide

For our guide to the best dental insurance, we looked at a long-list of various dental plan providers before whittling it down to the shortlist you see here. To help you find top rated dental insurance that you can comfortably afford, where possible we looked for plans with low premiums and reasonable annual benefit maximums.

Then, to ensure you are able to access treatment where you live, we whittled the list down further by only looking at dental insurance plans with a broad network of dentists available.

Waiting times and financial ratingsAnother consideration was waiting time. After all, frustrating waiting periods make using dental coverage difficult, so we worked hard to select, where possible, providers without lengthy waiting lists .

Financial rating and assurance is important too, so we only considered dental insurance companies with a strong financial score. To aid us with this specific aspect of research, we turned to Standard & Poors. For existing customer reviews and insight, we used the likes of Better Business Bureau, Consumer Affairs, Consumer Advocate and BestCompany to get an informed look at how these dental insurance providers treat their customers.

Do Retired Federal Workers Need To Sign Up For Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is optional medical insurance coverage, and it comes with a standard premium of $148.50 per month in 2021. If you are entitled to FEHB and Medicare benefits, Medicare Part B would serve as the primary payer and FEHB would act as the secondary insurance payer.

Your decision to enroll in Part B may depend on the benefits offered in your FEHB policy. Some of the things to consider include:

  • Part B may provide coverage for goods and services for which FEHB give zero or limited coverage.
  • Part B allows you to seek care any health care providers in the U.S. who accepts Medicare, while FEHB policies generally restrict you to a network of participating providers.
  • Because Medicare coordinates benefits with FEHB, you may be able to further reduce your out-of-pocket health care spending by pairing Part B with FEHB and taking advantage of the double coverage.
  • If you wish to join a Medicare Advantage plan that offers dental or vision coverage , you must be enrolled in Part B.

Do I Have To Enroll In Medicare Part B

What if you have other medical coverage, like an employers plan? Do you still have to sign up for Part B?

You can choose to delay Part B enrollment, as some people do when theyre covered under an employers or union-based health insurance plan. However, when that coverage ends, be aware that if you dont sign up for Medicare Part B within a certain period of time, you might face a Part B late enrollment penalty.

Heres one reason you might want to sign up for Medicare Part B. Suppose you decide youd like to buy a Medicare Supplement insurance plan. Or, you want to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. Both of these types of coverage require you to be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.

If you stay with Original Medicare and decide to sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, you need to be enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Part B.

Please note that even if you decide to get your Original Medicare benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan, you still have to pay our monthly Medicare Part B premium. Of course, if the Medicare Advantage plan charges a premium, youll need to pay that as well. Some Medicare Advantage premiums are as low as $0.

Average Cost Of Dental Insurance

According to the American Dental Association, those without any dental coverage pay approximately $370 per year in out of pocket expenses for routine preventive care.

However, the cost increases if you need major work like crowns or a root canal.

According to DentalPlans.com, The cost for you to buy a typical individual policy is about $350 per year. It can be a close decision to figure out if dental insurance is really worth it.

Luckily, there are no shortages of different types of dental insurance plans available.

Most dental insurance procedures are broken down into four different areas:

  • Preventive care: general cleaning, deep cleaning and X-rays
  • Basic procedures: Fillings, root canals and simple teeth extractions
  • Major procedures: Bridges, dentures and extensive surgery
  • Orthodontia: Braces for children

Without dental insurance or dental savings plan, it can be very expensive if you need basic or major work done.

However, if you only get preventive care or like a non-network dentist, paying cash can be better. You can save money as you wont be filing regular claims.

While you might lose money some years with insurance, you can save money when you need basic or major work.

In my opinion, getting dental insurance can be worth it as the estimated costs are almost the same. But you must use an in-network dentist to enjoy the benefits.

Part B . Most people pay monthly for Part B. Generally, Part B premiums are withheld from your monthly Social Security check or your retirement check.

If you are eligible for Medicare, you may have choices in how you get your health care. Medicare + Choice is the term used to describe the various health plan choices available to Medicare beneficiaries. If you are eligible for Medicare, you may choose to enroll in and get your Medicare benefits from a Medicare managed care plan. These are health care choices in some areas of the country. Medicare managed care plans provide all the benefits that Original Medicare covers. Some cover extras, like prescription drugs. Are Ratings And Consumer Reviews For The Company Positive

The only Better Business Bureau page we were able to find for GEHA references their Dental Connection plan specifically, and not the company as a whole. The BBB gives an A- rating, with six customer complaints on file in the past three years.

There are many more reviews for GEHA on Yelp, a total of 50 with some positive and the majority negative. Many complaints center on poor customer service experiences and claims that are not being paid. Billing appears to be a common problem, with several similar issues noted.

The number of complaints here is not especially high for a company serving 1.8 million members, but there are some repeated comments that do bear noting.

Will Smoking Affect My Dental Insurance Rates

Similar to the two basic types of life insurance policies, smoking can play a big role in determining your monthly premium.

Typically if you have smoked in the last five years it can increase your rates.

The main reason for the increased rate is that gum disease and more dental issues are directly related to smoking and chewing tobacco.

Positive reviews center around regular cleanings and dental exams, with one customer review on Consumer Advocate stating how, ‘This plan has a monthly premium of only $12.99/mo and I go twice a year for cleanings and exams. I pay a $15 Co-Pay each time. All of my x-rays are: No Charge! I selected an In-Network Humana Dental Provider close to my home. I receive a 25% discount if I go to a specialist.’

The biggest complaints are to do with poor customer service via telephone, and call center staff not adequately understanding the different dental plans on offer. Other criticisms are around Humana not keeping its list of in-network dentists up to date, which has led to some customers being caught out.

  • Only two employer-provided plans
  • Often lengthy waiting periods

Does Expensive Dental Insurance Mean Its The Best

The Complete Guide to the GEHA Dental Plan

For this guide to the best dental insurance, we consulted with three dentists to get their perspective on dental insurance providers. However, since they often have to negotiate prices with insurance providers, weve kept them anonymous to protect those interactions.

Each dentist said the same thing: be wary of choosing the cheapest provider in your area because they are typically the worst when it comes to approving procedures or reimbursements. And while it didnt affect our evaluations, each dentist named Delta Dental and MetLife as the most reliable and easiest to work with.

The dentists recommended that you start by assessing your current dental health. What work do you expect youll need in the next two to three years? For example, if you havent been to a dentist in a long time, you should consider a comprehensive coverage plan.

Do you have children who may need braces? Do you need implants? Most insurance plans dont cover these procedures until youve been on the plan for at least 12 months, so its worth taking the time to evaluate your oral health, even if it means getting a checkup with a dentist prior to deciding on a plan. Your dentist can help you project what kind of work you may need.
