  • European travel businesses that are not licensed airlines or their agents must provide financial protection according to the arrangements made in the country in which they are based

  • travel agents which are selling holidays as the agent of a travel business do not have to provide financial protection the travel businesss protection arrangements will apply

First: Check If Your Airline Is Still Offering Waivers

Starting in March 2020, the vast majority of U.S. and international airlines waived change and cancellation fees for travel, though the date when you purchased your ticket came into play.

Later in the year, United, Delta and American Airlines announced that they will eliminate change fees for all domestic flights and some international flights, as well as increase flexibility for standby flights. Basic economy fares are largely excluded from these policies, and you’ll usually have to pay up to change a basic economy ticket. The COVID-19 waived change/cancellation policies may still apply as long as the flights are booked within a certain time period.

For example, JetBlue will not charge any change or cancellation fees for basic economy tickets if you booked before March 31, 2021. If you purchased a flight that falls outside the date, you might be on the hook for the bill.

Thats where travel insurance can help, right? Lets look a little closer at some travel insurance fine print so youre aware of what to expect.

If You Purchased Travel Insurance Before Covid

Coronavirus threat: Your travel insurance queries answered

If you had already purchased travel insurance prior to the pandemic declaration, you may have coverage for the following:

Trip Cancellation

Travel insurance typically covers nonrefundable costs such as airfare and hotel bookings if your trip is canceled or delayed due to covered reasons including illness, natural disaster, or job loss. This may include trip-cancellation benefits if you get sick with COVID-19 before your trip or if you get quarantined during your travels. Travel insurance does not cover all situations, such as work emergencies, pre-existing medical conditions, or if you simply change your mind about a trip.

Trip Interruption

Trip interruption coverage provides reimbursement for prepaid and nonrefundable travel costs if your trip needs to be cut short for a variety of covered reasons. Covered reasons can range from unforeseen illness or death of a family member to natural disasters. If you purchased travel insurance before the COVID-19 pandemic, your plan may include coverage if you become ill from the coronavirus during your trip.

Emergency Medical Insurance

Even if you purchase travel insurance after the date the pandemic became a known event, some pandemic-friendly plans will offer trip cancellation, trip interruption or emergency medical coverage if you contract COVID-19 after youve purchased your travel insurance policy.

If The Trip Is Canceled Can I Get My Premium Back

Most travel insurance policies cover trip cancellation from the time of purchase to the day of departure for reasons like sickness or severe weather. They typically include a free look period after purchase, usually 10 to 15 days, during which time travelers can cancel for a full refund of the premium. After that, no dice.

When Royal Caribbean canceled Valerie Pedersens May cruise to Bermuda because of the pandemic, she was offered a refund. But Ms. Pedersen also wanted her $400 insurance premium back from Travel Guard insuring a trip that wasnt to be.

Travel Guard offered Ms. Pedersen a rollover.

On April 13, the company wrote her that she was beyond the free-look stage that would trigger a refund of the premium. It is our policy that all premium refund requests must be submitted within 15 days of the effective date of the policy, however, we are pleased to offer you a travel insurance credit voucher in the amount of $413.92, it wrote.

Pretty cheesy, I think, as I could use the actual cash now, Ms. Pedersen said.

Offering rollovers has been the industrys exception to its policy of no refunds after the free-look period. Decisions on how to handle policy refunds versus rollovers have varied in the pandemic. Allianz said it is allowing customers whose trips have been canceled because of Covid-19 by their travel operator be it a cruise line, airline or tour company to cancel their insurance and get a refund of the premium.

Can I Be Covered For Medical Expenses If I Contract Covid

The Medical Coverage for Covid-19 benefit can reimburse you for the medical costs incurred if you contract Covid-19 and need medical care during your trip.

Medical Coverage for Covid-19 is included within most policies under the Emergency Medical benefit. This benefit is designed to cover treatment specifically for travelers who unexpectedly contract Covid-19 while traveling. Squaremouth recommends a policy with at least $50,000 in coverage for international travel, and at least $100,000 for cruises or travel to a remote location.

What Travel Insurance Does Not Cover Related To Covid

Standard travel insurance does not cover trip cancellation due to fears or concerns about traveling during the coronavirus pandemic or any other epidemic. Standard travel insurance will not offer trip cancellation for government mandated travel restrictions either. Many travel insurance companies offer Cancel for Any Reason coverage at an additional cost, which allows you to cancel your trip for any reason, including fears of traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to note that CFAR upgrade must be purchased within a set number of days from your initial trip payment and you must insure 100% of your pre-paid and non-refundable trip costs in order to be eligible.

What Should You Know About Trip Cancellation Insurance

Travel insurance: Quirky features to watch out for
  • Trip cancellation insurance is generally available as a part of the travel insurance plan. This helps you get coverage for a comprehensive set of emergencies for the price of one travel insurance plan. Trip cancellation insurance plans are generally not available as standalone insurance products.
  • While trip cancellation insurance can be of great help and provide you recovery of most of the pre-paid expenses, you should be clear about the conditions applicable to such refunds. For instance, family emergencies or workplace schedule mismatches should be a part of the trip cancellation insurance policies. Otherwise, even if you have a very genuine reason to cancel the trip and have trip cancellation insurance coverage, you might not get the compensation.
  • Trip cancellation insurance does not cover any medical expenses whatsoever. If you are getting a travel insurance plan, some medical expense coverage is available as far it arises from a non-pre-existing condition. That coverage would usually begin only after you have started your itinerary or have reached your destination. And by that time, trip cancellation insurance might have become null & void since you have already boarded the flights or checked into the hotels. To get coverage for the medical expenses, you should consider a medical insurance plan.

    Different Types Of Travel Insurance

Youll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy. Also, like other travel insurance plans, your Allianz Global Assistance plan excludes losses caused by things like:

    • Civil disorder or unrest
    • Participation in or training for any professional or amateur sporting competition
    • Participating in extreme, high-risk sports
    • Flying or learning to fly an aircraft as pilot or crew
    • Nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination

Claiming Against An Unapproved Medical Condition

If you have a pre-existing medical condition or if you are waiting for test results/treatment for a medical problem and you dont tell your provider, your travel insurance may be automatically void for any claims you make relating to those medical needs. In most cases, you may also not be covered if you travel against medical advice or if you travel in order to seek medical treatment.

What you can do: Be honest and upfront when you purchase your policy about your pre-existing medical conditions.

    What About A Pre

People sometimes think that travel insurance wont cover them if they have a pre-existing medical condition. It can! But to ensure youre protected, youll need to meet certain requirements.

Here is how Allianz Global Assistance defines a pre-existing medical condition:

An injury, illness, or medical condition that, within the 120 days prior to and including the purchase date of your policy:

  • Caused a person to seek medical examination, diagnosis, care, or treatment by a doctor
  • Presented symptoms or
  • Required a person to take medication prescribed by a doctor .
  • Its important to know that the illness, injury, or medical condition does not need to be formally diagnosed in order to be considered a pre-existing medical condition.

Some travel insurance plans include coverage for pre-existing conditions, and some dont. At the bottom of this page, youll see a list of all Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance plans that can cover losses caused by pre-existing medical conditions if the following conditions are met:

  • Your policy was purchased within the time frame specified in your plan
  • You were a U.S. resident when the policy was purchased
  • You were medically able to travel when the policy was purchased
  • On the policy purchase date, you insured the full non-refundable cost of your trip with Allianz Global Assistance including trip arrangements that will become non-refundable or subject to cancellation penalties between the policy purchase date and the departure date.
