Understand Your Injury Coverage
In most states you would make a claim for your injuries through the at-fault persons auto insurer. If they are uninsured, you could make a claim through your own uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, if you have it, or through your health insurance.
There are some states that require you to purchase personal injury protection and have slightly different rules for collecting for your injuries after an accident. For example, your PIP coverage pays for your medical expenses and lost wages, even if you are not to blame for the crash. Receiving your PIP benefits requires you to make a claim under your own insurance policy. A deductible and/or copayment may be due when you use your PIP coverages.
This is commonly the situation in no-fault states although the law differs in each one. Some no-fault states give you the option of contacting the at-fault driver’s insurer to recover medical expenses not paid by your PIP. Your vehicles property damage would still be claimed through the at-fault partys liability coverage in no-fault states .
According to the Insurance Information Institute, 12 states and Puerto Rico have no-fault insurance laws: Florida, Hawaii,, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota Pennsylvania and Utah. If you live in one of these states, its wise to check with your insurance agent, or your state insurance department, for the tips on how to handle third-party accident claims.

Health Insurance And The Affordable Care Act
As of 2019, you will no longer have to pay a penalty on your federal tax return if you’re not insured, as the fine was rescinded for the 2019 tax year, though some states may still have mandates.
Even though there’s no longer a penalty, you’re protecting both your health and your financial status by taking out a health insurance policy.
There are health insurance exchanges or marketplaces in each state that you can use to , or you can look at other options such as your employer’s health care plan or health share ministries.

What Is Health Literacy
In August of 2020, the U.S. government released the Healthy People 2030 initiative, in which health literacy is a central focus. The new definitions, addressing personal and organizational health literacy, are as follows:
- Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.
- Organizational health literacy is the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.
As Healthy People states, these definitions have been changed from ones in the past in order to emphasize peoples ability to use health information , to focus on the ability to make well-informed decisions , to incorporate a public health perspective, and to acknowledge organizations responsibilities in addressing the subject.

How To Teach Critical Health Literacy In High Schools
Students across the country are the key to a healthier future. Implementing functional healthcare literacy education in schools prepares the next generation to navigate their health, while also equipping students with the knowledge to support their family members who may not have the understanding or resources to navigate the system independently.
EVERFIs new Healthcare Literacy course for high school students empowers students to develop critical health literacy skills, become advocates for their own health care, and know when and where to ask for help when making health-related decisions. Throughout interactive lessons, students will explore four main topics making healthy choices, health coverage, seeking care, and paying for medical care and gain confidence in navigating the world of healthcare.
Medical Emergencies Can Bankrupt You
Medical emergencies are very expensive. If you have the misfortune of undergoing a medical emergency without insurance, it is easy to find yourself with a crippling amount of medical debt, and seemingly no way out of the mess.
If you take good, preventative care of your health, it’s hard to see why you’d really need insurance. However, missing that last stair at home and dislocating an ankle, or having an accident on the ski slope and breaking an arm could cause an injury that costs you thousands of dollars in medical bills, and it can quickly climb higher if you need surgery or any kind of ongoing rehabilitation. Emergency surgeries such as an appendectomy can be very expensive as well.
You may not be able to work while you’re laid up, and that means that you could lose out on pay as well. Even with insurance, you may find it difficult to pay for health care costs in these instances. It is very hard to pay for medical costs without health insurance, especially if you are checked into a hospital even just overnight.

Faculty And Staff Resources
Most Rensselaer students are not from the immediate Capital Region area, meaning that when they first matriculate and/or return from a semester break, they are leaving many of their support systems, such as family and friends, that they utilize. Although many students quickly establish new and equally effective support systems, a number of students find the various pressures very stressful, sometimes to the point where it interferes with their academic success, emotional well-being, or their ability to take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them at Rensselaer. This lack of support may intensify during common semester “crisis periods” such as mid-term, final exam, or pre-holiday periods. As faculty and staff at Rensselaer, you may encounter these distressed students looking to you for support.
We understand that there are many factors that are relevant to your willingness to respond, including your particular beliefs about the limits of a faculty or staff member’s responsibility for helping students, or your personal style or philosophy. Other factors such as situational factors , the student’s openness to assistance, and a student’s comfort in seeking out contact, mayhave a substantial effect on the type of interactions you can have with a student.

Can’t Work Totaled Car Get Paid
If you miss work because of an injury you sustained in a car crash that was someone else’s fault, you can expect that person’s insurance company to pay for your lost wages. But their policy will have a limit on the amount you can recoup for lost wages.
If you’re hit by a driver whose liability limits are not high enough to cover all of your medical expenses and lost wages, you can make a claim under your own underinsured motorist coverage for the remainder, if you have it. If you live in a no-fault state, your PIP coverage will pay for your lost wages up to the limits of your policy.
When another driver wrecks your car beyond repair, his or her insurance company should pay you the actual cash value of your car before it was totaled. The industry standard definition of actual cash value is “replacement cost” minus “depreciation.” Replacement cost is the amount of money it would take to replace your vehicle with a similar one. Depreciation is the amount of money your car has devalued over time.
The insurer also should pay for the sales tax on the new vehicle that you purchase with the insurance money. See what to do when your auto insurer totals your car for more information.
