The type of cover you get will also depend on how your insurer treats epidemics and pandemics. Many travel insurers will automatically exclude cover related to epidemics and pandemics. It’s worth reading your product disclosure statement for either of those terms to find out whether your insurer covers them or not. The excess is the amount you agree to pay should you need to make a claim on your insurance.

We want to see at least $100k of Travel Health Insurance cover, unless the traveler has benefits in another policy. Health care costs of $3k-4k per day in a private hospital quickly add up.
Our recommendation for Medical Evacuation Insurance cover is for no less than $100k if the vacation is close to the United States. This should suffice for locations that Southwest flies to. Once we move to longer range travel, then higher cover levels are recommended. $250k of evacuation cover is recommended for those travelers in Africa and Asia.

Steve Foulsham, head of technical services at the British Insurance Brokers Association, advised caution when using insurers you havent heard of.
Insurers all have security ratings. Some are able to operate in the UK but are not regulated by the FCA and this can create some issues. Foreign insurers from places like Latvia and Iceland operate in the UK market, but are regulated in their home state and so do not offer the same protection as UK insurers such as Aviva or AXA.
‘If you do have do use a less known insurer because you have already left the UK, it may be worth checking its security rating with a broker and get some background.’
When Is The Best Time To Buy Travel Insurance
We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you maximize your coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip.
The financially prudent thing to do is to buy insurance when you have money at risk. If you buy nonrefundable airfare, which most travelers do, your money is at risk right away. For cruises and tours, it may not be an issue until cancellation penalties start to kick in. That could be at six months prior to departure.
Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. Its best to contact us to add coverage as soon as possible after you make new trip payments to be sure you have coverage for your full trip cost.
Financial Protection For Package Holidays
You need to know that your package holiday is protected against the travel organisers insolvency. This includes protection for services not performed and prompt repatriation if the travel organiser goes bankrupt whilst you are on holiday.
If you have booked a package holiday from a UK established business or a business established outside of the European Economic Area , which is a combination of 2 or more travel services , you will be protected by the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. The Regulations require businesses selling package holidays to have insolvency protection through the ATOL scheme for holidays including flights. For holidays that do not include flights, protection is provided through three options – Bonding or Insurance or Trust account.
If you bought your package holiday from a travel business established in an EEA country other than the UK, you protection will be provided under the arrangements made by that country.
You should make sure that you are provided with clear information, including on the level of insolvency protection, before you buy. Your package travel organiser will be able to provide that information to you.
