When Is It Too Late To Get Travel Insurance

Don't Miss

How Much Will Your Insurance Cover You For

You might be able to get cover for cancellation expenses if the Australian government changes the travel warning to “Do not travel” in the country you are planning to go to. This is only if you bought a policy before the ban was put in place. In most other cases, you won’t be able to get cover for cancellations if there is no travel ban in place, unless you already have CFAR travel insurance, which lets you cancel for any reason.

Please note that Cover-More has announced a suspension of any new Cancel For Any Reason policies as of 5pm AEST on Friday 13 March 2020 in Australia and New Zealand, in the face of the global coronavirus crisis. If you’ve already purchased CFAR before this date, you’ll still be covered as per the usual terms and conditions.

The type of cover you get will also depend on how your insurer treats epidemics and pandemics. Many travel insurers will automatically exclude cover related to epidemics and pandemics. It’s worth reading your product disclosure statement for either of those terms to find out whether your insurer covers them or not. For example, Budget Direct provides cancellation cover for epidemics while 1Cover excludes pandemics and epidemics.

For a full list on how insurers treat epidemics and pandemics, head to our guide where we analyse it.

It’s worth keeping in mind that, if your policy excludes epidemics or pandemics, you should still be covered for claims unrelated to coronavirus.

Your Plan Choices May Be Limited If You Wait Until The Last Minute

If there were a crown and a sash for Worlds Top Procrastinator, you would win them. Youre at home, packing your suitcase when you remember you havent yet purchased travel insurance for your trip to Cambodia. And your flight leaves tomorrow!

Oh no, you say. How late can I buy travel insurance? You jump online to get a quote and breathe a sigh of relief. Its not too late but theres only one plan available for last-minute travel. Its OneTrip Emergency Medical, a plan that offers only post-departure benefits. You buy it, because it offers great protection for a low price. But youll have to cross your fingers and hope you dont end up needing trip interruption benefits.

You can purchase travel insurance any time before the date of your departure. However, your plan choice may be limited if you wait until the last minute. If you want a plan that includes valuable trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits, as well as benefits for existing medical conditions, youll want to purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after booking.

Can I Get A Refund If I Need To Quarantine On Arrival At My Destination

If the country you’re going to insists you must quarantine for a certain amount of time on arrival, it’s unlikely that airlines or hotels will offer a refund if they’re open and running services. You also won’t be able to use credit or debit card protection, because the service is still available.

However, if you’ve a package holiday, you MAY be able to get a refund from the travel firm. Where the destination country puts a mandatory quarantine in place for all arrivals, this could be considered a ‘significant change’ to your holiday. Package travel association ABTA says travel companies should offer an alternative or a full refund in those circumstances.

Watch Out For The Excess

When youre comparing policies, its important to check the excess, as this can take a deal from being cheap to very expensive.

The excess is the amount you agree to pay should you need to make a claim on your insurance.

For travel insurance claims, excesses are applied on a per section basis. For example, if youre mugged on holiday you might have to claim under the medical expenses section, personal belongings section and money section of your policy. In this case three excesses could be deducted from your payout.

Known Event: When is it too late to buy travel insurance ...

If I Have Booked To Go To A Sporting Event Or Concert That Has Been Cancelled Will I Be Reimbursed For My Concert Tickets

If you have tickets booked to a sporting event which is cancelled, but there is no advisory against non-essential travel in place, then you would not be covered for cancellation of your holiday. Example: The Ireland-France rugby match is cancelled, but flights are still operating to Paris, so no refund of flights, hotels etc, would be given.

Buying Two Weeks Before Departure

If youre going on a big trip, just about the last time youll be thinking rationally about your trip is two weeks before you leave. What are advantages to buying two weeks before departure?

  • Youre covered, so youve got piece of mind.
  • You can focus on more pressing matters, like how to fit two weeks worth of clothes into your carry-on.
  • You have a clearer view of what the weather and travel situation is like. Be aware that if a named storm is bearing down on your destination you may not be covered for cancellation or interruption if you buy after that storm is named. However, you can still purchase and qualify for the many other coverages in a travel insurance plan – like medical expenses, medical evacuation, lost or stolen baggage.
  • You have a better idea of what your personal situation is like. You may be out of luck if youve already been called to jury duty or have had a pre-existing condition crop up, but otherwise you should be all set to pull the trigger on travel insurance at any time leading up to the day before you leave.

Regardless of what led to the decision, two weeks out is an excellent time to buy travel insurance if you havent yet, because your next option is

Is Travel Insurance A Waste Of Money

The short answer is no. Many people pay for a vacation by setting aside money to save up for it. Think about how youd feel if you were forced to cancel your trip due to an emergency or if your possessions were stolen while on vacation. Youd have to pay to reschedule your trip or replace your items out of pocket.

Travel insurance policies can help provide peace of mind and protection if anything unexpected happens on your trip. For example, if your trip gets interrupted for a covered reason or you get injured while youre away, the policy is designed to help cover those costs. Things happen, but with travel insurance, you can relax and enjoy your vacation knowing that youre protected.

As youre reviewing your options for travel insurance coverage, be sure to understand any exclusions that are relevant to your trip. Youll want to know what risks or situations will not be covered.

Can I Buy Travel Insurance For Someone Else

We know that may of our customers are parents and grandparents. They worry about youngsters in their family and how they can protect them. We all get particularly worried when we think of low-cost airfare to Mexico and the Caribbean. We know that this is exactly the sort of vacation that our kids or grandkids would love to go on. And probably, they wont even dream of buying travel insurance. Could we not just buy travel insurance for them?

Of course you can. In fact, most of the time travel insurance is bought by someone else. The head of the household will often buy cover for the whole family. Each family member, or friend, will get their own policy. We cover these issues in this excellent article.

Better to buy an inexpensive policy for your children than have to mortgage the house to get them treated and brought back home.

The Latest You Can Purchase Insurance

If your travel day is drawing near, and you havent bought an insurance plan yet, worry not because some providers can come to your rescue.

While you shouldnt wait this long to purchase coverage, you can still do so as far along as 24 hours before your trip.

Take note, though, that this is as good as your last chance.

Any later than that, youll have to travel without your trip being insured.

If youre planning to wait until you get to the airport or once youve arrived at your destination before getting that coverage, then its just not going to happen.

Since benefits of travel insurance are heavily dependent on the qualification window, youre unlikely to get great coverage for last-minute insurance.

Thats all fine and dandy for as long as everything goes according to your plan, and life starts giving you the break you deserve and want.

But the thing about life is that it can pull the rug from under you all of a sudden and, instead of having insurance to break the financial fall, youll be forced to accept the truth of the aftermath.

That is you spent a good deal of money for a plan that didnt come to fruition!

How Atol Protects You

The scheme protects you from losing money or being stranded abroad when an ATOL holder goes out of business.

The law says your holiday must be protected if it is a package holiday. ATOL protects most air package holidays sold by travel businesses that are based in the UK. ATOLs are only issued after a firm has met the CAAs criteria. Licensed travel firms must also contribute £2.50 for each person booked on an ATOL protected holiday to a financial protection fund controlled by the Air Travel Trust . In the event of an ATOL travel firms failure, the CAA uses the fund to ensure people abroad are able to finish their holidays and fly home, while those unable to travel on future bookings are able to receive a refund.

Southwest Airlines Travel Insurance Quotes

We are initially looking for travel insurance for our flight from San Francisco to New York.

Clearly, there are a number of different travel insurance carriers available for us to choose from. For this particular trip, the absolute lowest cost travel insurance would be the iTI Lite Travel Insurance.

We think that it has very strong cover, and super-low prices.

The benefits associated with this $19 policy are significant.

iTI Lite Time-Sensitive Benefits

  • Cancel for Work Reason: 100% refund
  • Pre-Existing Waiver: Yes
  • San Jose, Costa Rica
  • Turks and Caicos

None of these are jumping out as having inexpensive world-class health care. It is highly likely that your personal health insurance will be useless outside of the USA. It is inconceivable to us that a traveler would head to another country without medical insurance in place. The best Southwest Airlines Travel Insurance that you could find would have strong medical and evacuation benefits in place.

We want to see at least $100k of Travel Health Insurance cover, unless the traveler has benefits in another policy. Health care costs of $3k-4k per day in a private hospital quickly add up.

Our recommendation for Medical Evacuation Insurance cover is for no less than $100k if the vacation is close to the United States. This should suffice for locations that Southwest flies to. Once we move to longer range travel, then higher cover levels are recommended. $250k of evacuation cover is recommended for those travelers in Africa and Asia.

No matter where your next adventure takes you, take us with you.

Where To Get It

Several companies sell trip insurance just don’t buy it from the same company that sold you your vacation, Cochran advises.

“If the company goes out of business, now that phone number to process the claim will not work anymore,” he said. “I make sure to keep them separate.”

SmarterTravel’s McMahon also cautions against getting insurance through your airline.

“Typically the airline insurance that’s offered with airline tickets isn’t going to give you the best coverage, and won’t apply if the airline or provider folds under financial default,” she said.

Medical Benefits For Covid

Most travel insurance providers on Squaremouths website are offering Coronavirus Medical coverage for the pandemic, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation. This coverage can only apply to travelers who contract COVID during their trip and require medical attention.

Emergency Medical coverage for coronavirus specifically covers the treatment of COVID-19 for travelers who unexpectedly contract the virus while traveling. Squaremouth recommends a minimum of $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage to account for COVID-19 related medical care.

Medical Evacuation coverage can provide transportation to the nearest adequate hospital if a traveler contracts coronavirus during their trip. If the treating physician determines they should return home to receive further medical attention, this benefit can also cover those transportation expenses. Squaremouth recommends a minimum of $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage to account for potentially high evacuation expenses.

Medical coverage varies per travel insurance provider. Below are the providers that may still provide medical benefits for newly purchased policies:

  • April Travel Protection
  • AXA Assistance USA
  • Global Underwriters
  • HTH Travel Insurance
  • John Hancock
  • MedJet
  • Nationwide
  • USI Affinity
  • WorldTrips

In addition to the providers above, others are only covering medical expenses related to the coronavirus to insureds who bought a policy prior to the outbreak.

Making A Claim On Your Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can give you extra protection if your holiday doesn’t go as planned. This is very important if you are travelling independently because you may find yourself stranded with no way to get home and no rep to help sort out your holiday problem.

Read this page to find out more about what you need to do if you have to make a claim on your travel insurance policy.

How Do I Know If I Can Trust An Insurer I Haven’t Heard Of Before

There is a handful of lesser-known insurers that offer cover when abroad that appear if you search on Google.

Got time to kill at the airport? Some insurers will still sell you cover when you’re queuing for check in

Steve Foulsham, head of technical services at the British Insurance Brokers Association, advised caution when using insurers you havent heard of.

Insurers all have security ratings. Some are able to operate in the UK but are not regulated by the FCA and this can create some issues. Foreign insurers from places like Latvia and Iceland operate in the UK market, but are regulated in their home state and so do not offer the same protection as UK insurers such as Aviva or AXA.

‘If you do have do use a less known insurer because you have already left the UK, it may be worth checking its security rating with a broker and get some background.’

When Is The Best Time To Buy Travel Insurance

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you maximize your coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip.

The financially prudent thing to do is to buy insurance when you have money at risk. If you buy nonrefundable airfare, which most travelers do, your money is at risk right away. For cruises and tours, it may not be an issue until cancellation penalties start to kick in. That could be at six months prior to departure.

Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. Its best to contact us to add coverage as soon as possible after you make new trip payments to be sure you have coverage for your full trip cost.

Financial Protection For Package Holidays

You need to know that your package holiday is protected against the travel organisers insolvency. This includes protection for services not performed and prompt repatriation if the travel organiser goes bankrupt whilst you are on holiday.

If you have booked a package holiday from a UK established business or a business established outside of the European Economic Area , which is a combination of 2 or more travel services , you will be protected by the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. The Regulations require businesses selling package holidays to have insolvency protection through the ATOL scheme for holidays including flights. For holidays that do not include flights, protection is provided through three options – Bonding or Insurance or Trust account.

If you bought your package holiday from a travel business established in an EEA country other than the UK, you protection will be provided under the arrangements made by that country.

You should make sure that you are provided with clear information, including on the level of insolvency protection, before you buy. Your package travel organiser will be able to provide that information to you.

You can check Citizens Advice guidance on cancelling a package holiday and claiming compensation for a holiday.

How Bad Are Other Airlines Travel Insurance Policies

Well, take a look at our reviews of Delta, United, and American. Each and every one of them sell expensive travel insurance with awful cover levels. Even JetBlue follows the same process. Its a shame that customers of these airlines dont get treated correctly. We had almost given up hope on the US airline industry, when along came Southwest.

What Coverage Do I Need

That depends entirely on you. Are there pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs you are unwilling to lose? What unpredictable expenses would you not be able to cover? Reasons that might cause an unexpected cancellation? Different plans and options are available for various concerns and coverages that you may need. Read more about the types of coverage, benefits, and limitations.

Will My Travel Insurer Cover Me If I Move My Holiday

If you are one of the many who had to postpone your holiday and rearrange it, you might find that you can still use your current travel insurance policy. To move the insurance dates, or extend your annual travel insurance policy, you will need get in touch with your insurer. But in short:

  • Your cover stays the same except for the coronavirus cover. While your original travel insurance policy might have included cancellation cover if the Foreign Office advice was not to travel due to coronavirus, it is likely you will lose this cover for any extension period of an annual policy or a rearranged single-trip policy. But you should still be covered if you need to cancel because you or a family member is diagnosed with coronavirus before you go . Plus when you are on holiday, you will still have medical cover, including repatriation, if you need medical help abroad due to coronavirus. Everything else will stay the same  so, for instance, if you were to break your arm, be made redundant or suffer a bereavement before travel, your usual cover will remain in place.
  • You may be able to move your policy if it’s due to Foreign Office advice or travel disruptions . If your holiday has been rearranged because you no longer want to go, it may not be possible to change the insurance dates , but it is always worth asking.

    Why Travel Insurance For China

China is generally a very safe country. And insurance costs money.

So its natural for most people to ask why they would need travel insurance for China.

Ive been using World Nomads for my insurance coverage for years, but I have a few friends who have opted not to have insurance and it didnt go well.

*Obviously, the names below have been changed to protect my friends.*

    • Example #1 Bob: Bobs problem isnt unique. My friend Bob traveled to China in 2019 and experienced an all-too-common flight delay. This delay made him late for another flight, which made him miss his hotel, whichon and on and on. Without insurance, he had to pay for all of it himself.
    • Example #2 Janice: My friend Janice is an older lady who came to China for a Yangtze River cruise. While on the boat, she had a minor stroke and got stuck in a random Chinese hospital without medical coverage. Her family had to raise the US$45,000 to pay her bills and get her back home. All of this could have been avoided with insurance.
    • Example #3 James: James came to China as a 22 year old nomad exploring the world. On his 3rd day in China, he had his wallet, camera, money and passport stolen from his hostel room. Because he didnt have insurance, he had to beg for money from friends in China and family back home. He never recovered his camera.

I could go on and on with stories Ive seen over the past decade or so, but hopefully you get the point.

Insurance isnt just for people who are sick.
