Will Drivers Pay Less For Car Insurance

Why is auto insurance so expensive in Michigan?

After all of these changes, drivers in Michigan have one big question: Will this finally reduce the high cost of car insurance?

The new law requires insurers to reduce the cost of only the PIP portion of insurance, which makes up about half of a typical insurance premium, until July 2028. Drivers who choose to keep unlimited PIP coverage may see some savings, but its likely to be small. Drives can ask for less coverage, which provides fewer benefits, for additional savings.

Insurers will still be allowed to raise prices on the non-PIP parts of car insurance, but lawmakers believe drivers will still see overall savings.

The new limits on medical billing are also expected to rein in the cost of car insurance in Michigan. The full impact of this change wont be realized the medical fee schedule goes into effect starting in 2021. Insurers will have to adjust their pricing formulas to account for the new ban on certain non-driving rating factors. Things like your level of education and whether you own or rent your home will no longer impact what you pay for car insurance.

This change likely wont reduce the overall cost of car insurance in Michigan. However, it will change how those costs are distributed to individual drivers. In other words, the rating factors that are left like your annual mileage and driving record could carry more weight.

Michigans Pip Insurance Requirements Are Different Than Other States

12 other states in America have no-fault car insurance policies and PIP insurance requirements. Why is Michigan more expensive than all of these other states?

Well, other states place a limit on PIP coverage. Michigans PIP policy, however, does not: in Michigan, PIP policies guarantee unlimited lifetime medical benefits to those injured in an auto accident.

Your car insurance company can pay up to $555,000 to cover lifetime medical expenses. For medical expenses exceeding this amount, a nonprofit organization called the Michigan Catastrophic Claim Association picks up medical expenses exceeding that limit. Michigan drivers pay into the MCCA each year through their annual assessment fee, which is priced at $170 per vehicle.

Here Is How To Find Cheap Car Insurance In Michigan

Michigan drivers pay some of the highest average car insurance premiums in the country, but there are ways to find cheap rates:

  • Shop around: Car insurance companies all have different rates. Shopping around can help you find the company that can offer the cheapest rate for the coverage you need. The Triple-I recommends you get a minimum of three quotes to compare coverage and costs.
  • Utilize discounts: Most auto insurers offer a variety of car insurance discounts that could save you money. Common savings opportunities include bundling your home and auto coverage, insuring more than one vehicle and selecting paperless documents.
  • Choose appropriate coverage: While having adequate car insurance coverage is important, there are numerous optional endorsements that you could add. These might be appropriate for some drivers, but other drivers may not end up using optional coverage types, like sound system equipment coverage. Purchasing coverage and limits that are appropriate to your situation could help you keep your cost in check.

Auto Insurance Industry Losses

For the overall insurance industry in Michigan, private passenger auto insurance has become a perennial money loser, while other lines of property and liability insurance remain profitable.

The industry as a whole reported an average loss of 2.9 percent on auto insurance between 2005 and 2014, turning a profit in just three of the last 10 years, according to profit-and-loss data all insurers submit annually to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

In Michigan, when it comes to auto , its a losing proposition, said Pete Kuhnmuench, executive director of the Insurance Institute of Michigan, the industrys lobbying arm in Lansing.

Between 2005 and 2014, insurance companies posted an average profit margin of 9.6 percent on workers compensation insurance that Michigan employers are required to purchase to cover the costs of workplace injuries.

In 2011, the insurance industry in Michigan reaped a 7.1 percent average profit on workers compensation, while posting a 13.9 percent overall loss on auto insurance.

Unlike auto insurance, the workers comp system has a state-imposed schedule of rates doctors and hospitals get paid for treating injured workers.

The reality is, yeah, insurance companies make money they make money on work comp, for the most part, Kuhnmuench said.

Clearly, Michigan is a difficult place to do business for auto insurers, Lynch said. If they were making tons of money, they wouldnt be trying to get the laws changed.

Even when switching over to one of the cheapest coverage plans the state offers, it will still be much more expensive than the cheaper options in virtually any other state.

That isnt to say that Michigan drivers shouldnt bother trying to reduce their insurance costs, even if only by a little. It is always important to look into the options available to you. Searching for cheaper PIP or other full coverage insurance plans can help you save a bit of cash at a time. Its an unfortunate fact that Michigans situation doesnt seem like it will improve anytime soon.

Why Is Car Insurance Expensive In Michigan

Michigan drivers pay more for auto insurance than drivers in many other states. There are several reasons for this. Although driving without insurance in Michigan is illegal, 25.5% of drivers in the state are estimated to be uninsured, which is the second highest volume in the U.S. according to the Insurance Research Council. This may contribute to the higher premiums because insurance companies are more likely to pay out claims caused by uninsured motorists. Additionally, Michigan has relatively high minimum coverage requirements, a large number of licensed drivers and a relatively high incidence of accidents.

Reason : High Number Of Uninsured Drivers

Why Is Auto Insurance So Expensive in Michigan?

Michigan has the highest number of uninsured drivers in the nation after Mississippi. Approximately 20% of its drivers lack auto insurance. According to a 2018 report issued by Michigan State Police Sgt Eric Sumpter, MSP Cadillac Post recorded 135 citations over one year for drivers without proof of valid insurance and 96 citations for vehicles operating without security.

In a no-fault insurance system, insurers pay for property damage and medical bills at the expense of uninsured drivers. After all, they wont have a reason to buy insurance as long as they dont get caught. This forces insurance companies to increase insurance costs to avoid running into losses when claims are made. Therefore, the higher the number of uninsured drivers, the more costs are transferred to those with full coverage

Why Car Insurance in Michigan is so High

Michigan insurance companies suffer high rates of insurance fraud every year. Reports show that about 10 percent of no-fault insurance claims in Michigan are fraudulent. Insurance experts state that most fraudulent claims request the insurer to pay injured victims’ family members for patient care or cover unnecessary medical bills.

In addition, Michigan insurance law requires vehicle insurance companies to pay insurance coverage within 30 days of receiving a claim. This short grace period may prevent insurers from conducting adequate research on supposed accident victims. Insurers in the state raise insurance rates to cover the losses they encounter due to bogus claims.

Personal Injury Protection Coverage Is Required

Car owners are required to buy PIP insurance that covers the medical expenses of the policyholder and household residents if theyre injured in an auto accident. PIP insurance is related to Michigans no-fault policies. Because Michigan is a no-fault state, drivers are required to cover their own medical bills regardless of fault, and thats why drivers are required to have PIP.

Events That Can Impact Your Cheap Rates In Michigan

Car insurance rates arent fixed numerous scenarios can change how much you pay for coverage. However, as a way to protect consumers from what could be considered discriminatory rating factors, Michigan has banned the use of information not directly related to your driving history as factors for calculating your car insurance premium. The ban precludes auto insurers from using information like your age, ZIP code, occupation, marital status and homeownership to determine rates. Because of this ban, average premiums across Michigan are fairly similar, usually only varying by a few dollars from city to city.

However, there are still several factors that will impact how much you pay for auto insurance. These include your driving record, the type of vehicle you drive, how many miles you drive per year and the coverage and deductibles you choose. You might want to consider shopping around for coverage if your rate has recently changed because you:

Michigan Requires Pip Coverage For All Drivers

One of the biggest reasons why insurance is so expensive in Detroit is because Michigan requires personal injury protection, or PIP, for all drivers. PIP is designed to pay your or your passengers medical bills if you are injured in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. PIP coverage is very expensive for insurers to provide, so those additional costs get passed on to drivers.

Because auto insurance companies are required to provide PIP in Michigan, this can cause health insurance companies to start cutting corners. Michigan law has allowed health insurance providers to negotiate discounts with healthcare providers, which means that auto insurance companies can get stuck with hefty medical bills after an accident.

Unfortunately, PIP coverage is required to be unlimited in Michigan, meaning that there is no limit to the medical bills insurance companies have to cover. This means that Michigan drivers will be hit with hefty insurance premiums to cover the cost.
