Primary Vs Secondary Medical Coverage
Travel medical insurance can be primary or secondary coverage, depending on the plan. If its primary, it will pay out before any other health insurance you have. If you have health insurance and buy travel medical insurance as secondary coverage, your own health plan must pay first.
If youre traveling overseas and your U.S. health plan doesnt provide coverage, a travel medical plan thats secondary will essentially become primary coverage due to lack of other insurance.

Why Travel Insurance Is So Important
Posted by: 4 years, 4 months ago
Over the many years that we have been providing life-enriching journeys to our guests, we have unfortunately also had to provide support during a number of unforeseen situations leading to trip cancellations or curtailment.
Our guests wellbeing is of the utmost importance to us. We urge you to read through the following information carefully and to ensure peace of mind by taking out comprehensive travel insurance.
Why is it important to take out travel insurance? As exciting as travel is, it does hold some risks. By taking out travel insurance you are essentially covering yourself against travel risks such as lost or stolen luggage, cancellation cover and most importantly, unexpected medical costs abroad.
It is extremely important to take out travel insurance, even if it tightens your budget a little. Your loss could be a lot greater should anything unforeseen happen. Imagine you have a medical emergency in a foreign country, or a natural disaster forces you to leave your paid accommodation. Your flight could be cancelled baggage could be lost or your wallet or passport could be stolen. These are all scenarios that happen to tourists every day!
What does a travel insurance policy cover?
- A comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide:
- Emergency medical cover
- Losses incurred due to unforeseen cancellation or having to cut your trip short
- Death and disability cover
- Personal liability cover
- Baggage cover
Tailoring The Insurance Cover For Specific Needs
The travellers could custom cover to specific needs, with different levels of cover to choose from, depending on budget. It is also possible to top-up individual portions of travel insurance, such as lost luggage and flight cancellation.
There are also savings available:
Travelling Couples: Affordable premiums often available for two people travelling together on an identical travel itinerary.
Family/Friends – 3 to 9 people travelling on an identical travel itinerary might qualify for a special rate.
Specific purpose travel: Travel insurance often offers coverage for a variety of travellers – student travel, business travel, leisure travel, adventure travel, cruise travel, and international travel are all various options that can be insured.

Reason #5 Travel Insurance Is A Must: Its Easy To Find Affordable Travel Insurance
Cost is probably the number one reason people dont buy travel insurance. We understand! If youre already paying thousands for a long-awaited cruise or resort vacation, its tough to spend even a little more on insurance.
Heres something a lot of people dont know: Insurance can be really affordable. When you get a quotefor travel insurance, well present you with multiple coverage options, so you can pick the best one for your trip and your budget. Our least expensive plan, OneTrip Cancellation Plus , offers three key protections trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay benefits. If you know youll be taking more than two trips this year, your most cost-effective travel insurance option may be an AllTrips plan, which protects all your travel in a 365-day period.
The best way to find a low-cost travel insurance plan is to get a quote for your next trip and then compare plans. Remember: If you’re not completely satisfied, you have 10 days to request a refund, provided you haven’t started your trip or initiated a claim. Premiums are non-refundable after this period.
When Is Travel Insurance Not Necessary
Travel insurance primarily covers two aspects of your trip your reservations and your medical expenses while traveling.
If all of your reservations can be canceled without penalty, then trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage isnt necessary. But even if your trip isnt 100% refundable, insurance may not be necessary. For example, a cheap flight and hotel stay may not be worth covering, though you may still want to purchase travel insurance for medical situations.
Medical coverage typically is not necessary if you have a U.S.-based health insurance policy and you’re traveling within the U.S. In those cases, you probably already have adequate coverage for illness or injury.

Travel Health Insurance For Older People
Older people should take particular noteMedicare does not pay for hospital treatment or medical care outside of the United States, except for a few very limited circumstances. That means that you’ll be on your own unless you have other healthcare insurance providers or you buy a travel policy.
Some Medigap policies and Medicare Advantage plans provide foreign travel emergency healthcare coverage when you travel outside the U.S. And if you have employer-sponsored insurance that supplements Medicare, it might provide some coverage overseas.
Before traveling outside of the country, check with your supplemental plan or Advantage plan regarding travel benefits.
When You Don’t Need It
Consider your vacation an investment. Would you be OK losing that money? On a whole, if you’re spending a relatively small sum on your trip, insuring that investment is probably not worth it.
- Skip It: For U.S. travel
Traveling to Florida? Road-tripping around the American Southwest? You can probably skip any extra insurance. Travel within the U.S. is typically a less expensive investment and most people tend to plan only a few weeks in advance. ValuePenguin estimates the average domestic trip spans about four days and costs $576 per person.
Plus, if you have medical insurance, you’re typically covered for any emergencies that occur. As always, double check the fine print, but experts generally recommend opting out of trip insurance for short trips within the U.S.
- Skip It: If your card offers it
Check your wallet before buying any travel insurance, since some credit cards actually offer it as a perk. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card offers built-in trip interruption insurance that reimburses up to $10,000 per person if your trip is cancelled or cut short because of situations such as an illness or severe weather. The Citi Prestige and Citi ThankYou Premier cards also offer baggage and trip cancellation protection.
So even if you are traveling outside the U.S., if your credit card’s coverage is thorough, you won’t need to purchase anything extra.

When Should I Buy Family Travel Insurance
If you’re travelling abroad as a family, it makes sense to take out insurance that covers you all from the moment you book your trip. Especially if you have children, as the potential risks and reasons to make a claim either before or during your trip can increase.
Often, its not necessarily a case of looking for and buying a dedicated family travel insurance policy. Instead, standard travel insurance policies will give a quote for the number of people travelling. That could be an individual, a couple, or two adults plus typically 1-8 children aged 18 or under. They must all be living permanently at the same address. You just list them in the policy.
Always read the policy details to make sure your specific family requirements will be covered, especially if any of your group will be travelling separately.
Consider Where You’re Going
Some policies are destination-specific, others are worldwide. The level of cover and the cost of travel insurance can vary depending on the region you’re travelling to. Risks in some regions or destinations may be of greater concern than others to the insurer.
- Choose a policy that covers you for every country you’re travelling to, including stopovers and transit points
- Consider the current situation where youre going, always check out the latest risks and issues in the destinations travel advisory and
- Make sure your destination’s advice level isn’t Do not travel’. Check if your policy covers you for cancellations if the advice level goes up after youve booked.

You May Already Have Coverage
Consumer advocate Charlie Leocha, president and co-founder of Travelers United, points out that trip insurance is a big revenue generator for the airlines. And while some consumers benefit from it, he believes most travelers dont need this kind of insurance.
His advice: Check to see if any of your many do.
Last summer, WalletHub, the personal financial website, compared travel insurance coverage offered by 64 credit cards from the largest issuers to come up with a list of 2018s Best Credit Cards with Travel Insurance. WalletHub found that:
- 93 percent of all credit cards and 85 percent of business credit cards offer travel accident insurance.
- Nearly half of all cards and 20 percent of business cards offer trip cancellation insurance.
- 39 percent of all cards and 60 percent of business cards offer lost luggage insurance.
- 25 percent of all cards and 20 percent of business cards offer delayed luggage insurance.

Travel Insurance: Do I Really Need It
Regular readers of my column will know that complications, costs and pitfalls of insurance is a subject I regularly try to tackle. Often I get follow-up inquiries from readers as a result. But the last article, two weeks ago, drew a very unusual response.
It came from a reader called Edward and here, slightly edited, is what he said: “I am in my mid-sixties, and have been travelling regularly since my late teens. At present I live in China, and take about 60 to 70 flights a year, both inside the country and abroad including to some dodgy places. I have never once paid for travel insurance. Obviously many of my journeys were made before I had a credit card, which made things a little bit harder . And with no mobile phone. In spite of these problems, insurance has always seemed to me a waste of money.
“I think that’s enough to make the point. I’ve always put these incidents down to experience, and dined off some of them for years. Never once have I been tempted to pay for insurance. Indeed, it is my firm conviction that in the end I’ve lost far less cash than I would have paid for policies. Moreover, many people I know have been ripped off by insurance companies that refuse to pay or find ways of paying less than the customer expected. Do you sincerely believe that travel insurance would have been worth it for me in the past, or will be in the future?”

What Happens If The Airline/tour Operator Goes Out Of Business
Before you book, check that your tour operator is a fully bonded company, licensed by the Commission for Aviation Regulation.
If a fully bonded company licensed by the Commission for Aviation Regulation goes out of business, then the Commission can act. They will assess your claim for a refund or they will arrange to get you home if you are stranded abroad or experience significant delays. You can get more information on your rights in our travel section.
You may also have some cover if you book your trip on your credit card. Check the terms and conditions of your credit card.
Because Medical Evacuations Can Be Really Expensive
If you get seriously sick or badly hurt while traveling overseas, and you need to be taken via helicopter to the nearest high-quality hospital, the cost can be enormous. In some parts of the world, a medical evacuation can potentially cost six figures and that doesnt even include the cost of getting you home again.2
Travel insurance with emergency medical transportation benefits can pay for you to be transported to the nearest appropriate facility if you suffer a covered illness or injury during your trip and our medical assistance team determines that the local medical facilities are unable to provide appropriate treatment. It can also pay for specialized transportation to bring you home, once your condition is stable.

Why Buy Travel Insurance
Its a known fact that medical care is expensive. As we can see in the example below, the amounts billed following a hospital stay of just a few days can quickly add up to several thousand dollars.
And unfortunately, the patient will remain responsible for most of these costs if they don’t have travel insurance, as provincial health insurance plans reimburse only a small portion of medical care abroad.
If you reside in Ontario, as of January 1, 2020, OHIP no longer covers most costs incurred following a medical emergency outside of Canada. Coverage for up to $210 per treatment will be offered to travellers who need renal dialysis.
When Is The Best Time To Get Travel Insurance
If youre wondering when you should buy travel insurance, the simple answer is, as soon as possible. Ideally, youll buy coverage no later than 15 days prior to your trip. But figuring out the type of coverage you need, how much you need and what supplemental coverage will help protect your trip, requires thoughtful consideration of what youll be doing on your trip and what risk factors you may encounter along the way.
If you dont purchase insurance by that 15-day marker or you had to book your trip on short notice, youll still be able to buy coverage. Just understand that, typically, the coverage will cost a little more.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Pandemics
As global pandemic became a term that the world learned and experienced in 2020, it ushered in new challenges for those who travel. What that means for you as a potential traveler is that youll want to consider whether COVID-19 or any other potential pandemic presents a risk for your trip. Some travel insurance policies provide protection against cancellations related to pandemics. When youre looking for travel insurance, take the time to read the exclusions in the policy, and make sure it provides both coronavirus and general pandemic protection if you want to be covered for those events.
Should I Consider Travel Insurance
If you can’t afford travel insurance, then you can’t afford travel. Is it true?
For those who never travel with it, youll hear things like “Oh, it doesnt matter if you lose your bags, just travel light with stuff you can afford to replace or Medical bills in Southeast Asia are pretty cheap if you get need to get over food poisoning or our favorite “Travel insurance companies will just tell you the horror stories to get you to buy insurance.”
The last one is unashamedly true. We absolutely want you to know weve had to deal with thousands of emergencies and evacuations over the years. We want you to know that without travel insurance, an emergency evacuation can cost in excess of US$100,000.
In most cases, your travels will go without a hitch. Youll not have to experience the nightmare of being seriously ill or injured in a foreign country. But if you do, the last thing you want is not having the support or financial means by which to get treated and flown home.
For that alone, you may find travel insurance is worth every cent.
It can however be a little confusing, so lets try and demystify travel insurance. At World Nomads, we aim to present insurance terms with clarity, however there are times when certain terms will have various restrictions, limitations and exclusions, which only the description of coverage can fully explain.
