Fsc Confirms Covid Vaccine Will Not Invalidate Life Insurance Policies

02 July 2021

You may be aware that the Financial Services Council recently issued a media release stating that receiving the COVID-19 vaccine will not impact life insurance policies. In the statement, FSC CEO Sally Loane said to be clear – the COVID-19 vaccine is not experimental treatment. Receiving approved treatment from a qualified medical professional at an approved medical facility is not a self-inflicted injury.” One of the main reasons why people hold life insurance policies is to provide peace of mind for themselves and their families. The FSC would like to reassure Australians that when they get vaccinated, their life insurance will be there for them, completely unaffected. AIA Australias position is aligned with the FSC and we want to provide comfort that if your members receive the COVID-19 vaccine then this will not invalidate their life insurance cover. The official FSC media release can be found here.

Does My Health Plan Cover Covid

If you have a health plan from William Russell, youre covered for the treatment of COVID-19 as you would be for any other viral infection. This is provided that the plan you have selected covers the treatment and you dont have personal medical exclusions on your certificate of insurance that would apply.

For example, if you have a personal medical exclusion for respiratory conditions or any other condition that might be affected by Coronavirus, you wouldnt be covered for the diagnosis and treatment of your excluded condition.

Is My Life Insurance Void If I Havent Had The Covid

Will insurance companies punish you for getting a COVID ...

With the government and the World Health Organisation advising people to take an approved vaccine as soon as it is offered, what will happen to your insurance if you dont take the vaccine?

It is a legitimate question but the answer is fairly standard: the vaccine, whether you take it or not, will not have an impact on your level of cover.

In other words, the vaccine is recommended but is not compulsory. And so life insurance can provide a cash lump sum in the event of your death or becoming diagnosed with a critical illness irrespective of your Covid-19 vaccine status.

For any queries about the vaccine, the NHS Covid-19 vaccine page is a good starting place.

Clhia Shoots Down Online Rumours About Covid

The associated rebutted false claims that vaccination would affect benefits and coverage

  • 11:07

In an effort to quell false online rumours, the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association is telling Canadians that getting a Covid-19 vaccine will not impact their insurance coverage.

The industry trade group issued a statement reporting that it has become aware of claims on social media that people who get a vaccine will not be able to get life insurance or may be denied their disability or life insurance benefits.

These claims are incorrect and have no basis in fact whatsoever, it said.

The CLHIA stressed that receiving the vaccine will not affect individual or workplace life and health benefits, nor future applications for coverage.

No one should be afraid and choose to not protect themselves from Covid-19 because they are worried about it affecting their benefits, the association said in a statement.

All of Canadas life and health insurers are supportive of Canadians receiving government approved vaccinations to protect themselves from serious illness and death.

The group noted that the vaccines have been approved as safe and effective by Health Canadas independent review process, and that insurers consider vaccination to be one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and others from serious illness and death from Covid-19.

Are Premiums Or Coverage Being Affected Yet

Fortune recently reported that while several of the biggest U.S. life insurance companies arent yet asking customers for their vaccination status, a few insurers told the magazine they are doing so for people at high risk. It wasnt clear from the article whether this is affecting premiums.

A recent study comparing life insurance policies from 2014 through February 2021 found that premiums and coverage didnt change a lot during the pandemic. The study did find some evidence that policy terms for the oldest individuals and those with high-risk health conditions did worsen.

The authors of the study suggested that the rapid development of vaccines may be why life insurance markets havent yet shown a dramatic response to COVID-19, but their work does not distinguish the vaccinated from the unvaccinated.

Its important to note that no matter what, premiums and coverage on existing life insurance plans wont change, so a death due to COVID-19 will definitely be covered. In general, denial of life insurance claims is rare and occurs only for specific documented reasons.
