How Can I Prevent Contracting Coronavirus

Being proactive is the best method of prevention – wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and avoid close contact with people who are sick. The CDC also recommends wearing a mask in public settings. If you are sick, prevent the spread of illness by staying home, avoiding contact with others, cleaning surfaces and objects with disinfectant, and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Please refer to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention for the latest information on prevention.

Which Policies Have The Best Coronavirus Cover

From fresh lockdowns and changing lists to getting sick or being denied boarding, there are still dozens of ways the pandemic could wreck your holiday, even if youve been vaccinated.

This is even the case if youre travelling to a green list country.

Thankfully, there are some insurers who offer protection for all or many of these.

Weve sorted policies into four categories based on the strength of their Covid cover. From weakest to strongest these are:

  • Basic For policies providing emergency medical cover and repatriation for coronavirus while youre away.
  • Low Insurance that covers unrecouped costs from cancelling your holiday if youre diagnosed with Covid-19.
  • Superior Policies that cover cancellation if youre told to self-isolate without testing positive yourself, for example if you receive a test and trace notification via the NHS app.
  • Complete Our highest rating. Complete policies cover you for cancellation if you cant travel due to changes in FCDO advice or because of a lockdown.

We gave our Complete rating to just two policies . Both of these are from banks. The Barclays Travel Pack add-on is for current account holders, and HSBCs Select and Cover, is available to current account, savings account, mortgage and credit card customers.

Youd be eligible for HSBCs travel insurance if you opened an Online Bonus Saver account with a minimum of £1.

And 53% of the policies we analysed had Low cover, while 14% received our Basic rating.

Travel insurance doesnt cover cancellations from airlines, restricted country entrance guidelines based on coronavirus-related border closures or many of the pandemic-related reasons why you might not be able to complete a trip as planned.

Consider Cancel For Any Reason Travel Insurance

“Cancel For Any Reason” coverage allows you to cancel a trip for any reason and receive a partial refund of your nonrefundable trip costs as long as the trip is canceled at least two days in advance. You cannot purchase CFAR coverage on its own; it is an optional upgrade that is sometimes available when you buy travel insurance. Not all providers offer it, so if youre looking for the CFAR supplement, youll have to ask your travel insurance provider about it or filter your online search accordingly.

What If I Can’t Or Don’t Want To Go Because I Have To Quarantine On My Return

We’ve previously been asked by users if they’ll legally be able to get a refund on travel bookings if they are unable or unwilling to quarantine on their return, and are therefore unable to take their trip. The short answer is no, as the company would not have to refund you for your disinclination to travel though some firms may agree to help out, so it’s worth asking.

Your travel insurance is also unlikely to cover you if you have to quarantine. However, insurance trade body the Association of British Insurers says you should ask your insurer directly to be certain, as some insurers may consider exemptions if you will be disproportionately affected, eg, if having to quarantine on your return will affect your employment.

Similarly, if an overseas destination moves from the green list to the amber or red lists in the new traffic light system, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to claim a refund from travel firms or your travel insurer, as the change wouldn’t impact the delivery of your holiday only what happens when you get back.;However, if your destination is reclassified, it’s possible your travel provider may choose to cancel your booking itself in the event this happens, the normal rules on cancellations would apply.

Baggage delay, damage, and loss policies dont cover everything in your bags. Common travel insurance exclusions include glasses, hearing aids, dental bridges, tickets, passports, keys, cash, and cell phones. In some cases these items are covered but only up to a certain dollar limit, so if you have multiple expensive electronic items , you might not have enough coverage to pay for the loss of all such items.

How Is Domestic Travel Affected By The Covid

As of April 2, 2021, people who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine can travel safely within the United States. Refer to the CDC Guidelines on Domestic Travel for more information.

For unvaccinated domestic travelers, the CDC recommends taking the following steps to protect yourself and others from COVID-19:

  • Get tested 1-3 days before your trip, and do not travel if you are positive for COVID-19
  • Wear a mask, avoid crowds, and wash your hands often while traveling
  • Get tested 3-5 days after travel and quarantine a full 7 days after traveling, even if the test is negative.

For all travelers, states have different guidelines and restrictions. Be sure to refer to InsureMyTrips guide to Pandemic Travel Restrictions By State.

If The Trip Is Canceled Can I Get My Premium Back

Most travel insurance policies cover trip cancellation from the time of purchase to the day of departure for reasons like sickness or severe weather. They typically include a free look period after purchase, usually 10 to 15 days, during which time travelers can cancel for a full refund of the premium. After that, no dice.

When Royal Caribbean canceled Valerie Pedersens May cruise to Bermuda because of the pandemic, she was offered a refund. But Ms. Pedersen also wanted her $400 insurance premium back from Travel Guard insuring a trip that wasnt to be.

Travel Guard offered Ms. Pedersen a rollover.

On April 13, the company wrote her that she was beyond the free-look stage that would trigger a refund of the premium. It is our policy that all premium refund requests must be submitted within 15 days of the effective date of the policy, however, we are pleased to offer you a travel insurance credit voucher in the amount of $413.92, it wrote.

Pretty cheesy, I think, as I could use the actual cash now, Ms. Pedersen said.

Offering rollovers has been the industrys exception to its policy of no refunds after the free-look period. Decisions on how to handle policy refunds versus rollovers have varied in the pandemic. Allianz said it is allowing customers whose trips have been canceled because of Covid-19 by their travel operator be it a cruise line, airline or tour company to cancel their insurance and get a refund of the premium.

Under What Situations Might I Qualify For Trip Protection

  • If your doctor issues a note stating that youre too ill to fly, you may be able to file a claim under trip cancellation for reimbursement of your insured, prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs. That said, all details of the claim are reviewed once it has been filed, and every situation is different so this is no guarantee of reimbursement. However, if youre immunocompromised and can prove you will suffer high risk from germ exposure, a travel insurance policy with the optional cancel for any reason benefit might help you recoup some of your lost travel costs.
  • If youve been ordered to quarantine for safety precautions even if you dont ultimately get sick your insurance may cover your unexpected costs under the trip cancellation and interruption clause on your policy. However, this quarantine typically must be ordered by a doctor to trigger coverage, and it typically requires strict isolation. In other words, a self-imposed quarantine will not be covered, so its important to know exactly how your policy defines quarantine and what requirements go along with it.

Whats Not Covered By Trip Cancellation Insurance

Will travel insurance cover coronavirus claims?

While every traveler may have a unique circumstance for canceling a trip, not every problem is covered. Generally, trip cancellation insurance doesnt cover problems that arise from foreseeable events. A foreseeable event is a situation that may have been known or was expected before it happened. Essentially, if youre purchasing a policy with a certain situation in mind or an expected problem, its likely a foreseeable event.

For example, lets say you purchase trip cancellation insurance for a family vacation to Cabo San Lucas when a hurricane is in the way. Depending on the policy, trip cancellation may not be covered.

Foreseeable events are not the only events excluded from trip cancellation insurance. Here are a few other examples of some problems typically not covered:

  • Intentional self-inflicted harm, suicide or attempted suicide
  • Normal pregnancy, fertility treatments, childbirth or elective abortion
  • Alcohol or substance abuse or use
  • Mental or nervous health disorders such as depression, anxiety or psychosis
  • War , acts of war and military duty
  • Participation in amateur or professional sporting events and training
  • Financial default of a carrier

Will Free Accommodation Be Provided

If you’re stranded due to a cancelled flight which is leaving a UK or EU country, or it’s to the UK/EU on a UK/EU airline, then your airline must pay to put you up in the meantime, although you may need to pay and later claim this back. Keep hold of receipts and only expect reasonable costs to be reimbursed. If your flight doesn’t fall within this scope, check with the airline if it’s responsible.

For package holidays, trade body ABTA says providers are only obliged to put you up for three nights if your return trip is cancelled.

For travel by any other means, contact your provider. If you’re struggling to get help, you can also try contacting the UK embassy in the country for assistance.

Can I Claim These Costs On My Insurance

If you’re abroad for longer than planned due to your return journey being disrupted by travel bans, insurers we spoke to said your cover would be extended.

But while this means you’ll continue to be covered under the usual terms of your insurance so for example, you should be able to claim for emergency medical expenses insurers we spoke to said you won’t be covered for extra costs incurred by having to stay longer, such as extra accommodation or travel.

It’s still worth checking with your insurer but most policies won’t cover you for coronavirus-related cancellation if you took out the insurance and booked your trip after mid-March 2020. As insurance only covers unknown events, that’s the period most classed the pandemic as a ‘known event’.
